During WWII the United States of America was in a declared war. This is not the case here. So the situation is not comparable 1-1. I don't want to dive into the rabbit hole of if it's right or wrong to support Ukraine. But the jobs erased in the gun industry due to lack of business has to be discussed and mitigated in a way. Those are our neighbors and friends working in the local gun store who lose their jobs. Not sure if they are agreeing to not being able to provide for their families anymore because of the government decision to support Ukraine.
More guns and parts are made than ever! What on earth you are talking about lost jobs? Arms industry is booming.
@@juhanivalimaki5418 you might have missed the tiny detail that this presentation was about ammo shortage. Guns and parts are only one side of the equation to use a firearm . Why would I buy a gun if I cannot get the ammo for it or have to pay with my first born for a box of shells?

This is also an election year here in the good old USA. That always contributes to an ammo, and gun, shortage.
Also, remember the toilet paper "shortage" at the start of the pandemic? That was not caused by all of our toilet paper being shipped to a war zone, but by hoarding here at home.

Not nonsense, many people feel like their rights will get trampled by the ridiculous clown show forced upon them by one particular party that likes to proffer their desire to confiscate guns on a daily basis.
I hate this powder issue. I have pretty good store already like most serious shooters.

I saw this coming since the Clinton years and shopped accordingly.
I have already done it. 10k rounds of 380 and 20k rounds of 9mm . This is my new stock as I deplete my pre-Covid ammo. Yeah I got all the 38spl,40,45,10mm,223,556 & hunting ammo I will ever need. I compete with 22lr, 380,9mm and train 4-5 times a week. You guys can give up your hobby but I sure as hell won't
Well, you’re certainly entitled to do what you want. But since you shoot so often, it makes sense for you to buy more ammo. Reloading might be a good option too. Roy

There is one other big thing with ammo shortage and prices.
When i was working as a teen min wage would buy a 30-30 in a week. Or a 1/2 brick of 22lr for a hr work.
I could plink all weekend for 2hr work.
The last box of cci i bought was 11.99 thats about 1 1/2 hr work at mw.
For not much shooting.
If you can't get ammo or aford ammo. How are you going to get you're kids into shooting?

If the kids don't shoot. There will be no one to stand up to the gun grabbers.
This is a big if not the biggest problem with no ammo or unaffordable ammo.
You don't think that this is just an accident, do you? The gun grabbers are fighting their war on guns on multiple fronts. As gun owners and shooters, we need to be aware of this and be fighting the battles on all of the same fronts.

You can cast lead ball.
You can make black powder without much trouble.
You can use flintlock, matchlock, caplock.
Learn new skills. Do you think there were powder, brass, and primer manufacturers when the Indians were storming the forts? No. If people had powder, ball, and flint for their muskets it is because THEY GATHERED IT THEMSELVES.

@@tbjtbj4786 Indians were pretty adept themselves, and lighting stuff on fire, attaching it to arrows, and burning down wooden fortifications.
As with most materials, it comes from the ground. Brass, lead, flint, the stuff that grows from the ground that gets converted to other stuff made into accelerants and explosives.
I struggle with a genetic affliction, the Cheap Gene, as a result I bargain shop and manage my inventory to avert a lack of resources. Prior to the 8 long years of Barak the Magnificent, I made a number of prudent purchases when a vendor would have a 50% off sale, I bought. Primers are another story back I have laid up a few for WWIII, when a friend would divest themselves of a stockpile I would also acquire a little inventory. When 22 long rifle was scarce, I found myself woefully understocked, so in the interim, I again bargain shopped and acquired a workable reserve. So I would recommend prudent resource management and keeping your eyes wide open for sales/bargains/closeouts and purchase a reasonable amount, store it properly and actively manage what you have. Bargains are few and far between, but occasionally they can be found, even in times of scarcity. As has been said "This too Shall Pass".

I've been trying to buy a single pound of Trail Boss for almost 2 years now. It's unobtainium.
I haven't seen Trail Boss anywhere in a long time. I'm on the Kentucky/Tennessee line.
Things have been getting short for at least a year or more and I’ve noticed that too about Trail Boss. Roy

According to Hodgdon it hasn't been discontinued but the factory that makes is has had to focus on military supplies.
I'm all about helping others, but the fact that Ukraine did not stockpile it's own ammunition, knowing that something like this could happen, should not require us to give them all "our" ammo. They would never have done this for us. Americans are footing the bill for these other wars, and their comes a time when there needs to be some reciprocity. When it gets to the point that I can't get components to load a box of ammo to last me the hunting season...I have a problem with that!
I heard a month or so ago that IMR powders were heading to $90 per pound! Haven't seen it that high, if it can be found, but $70 has definitely become reality.
The retail price of most rifle powder is low $80 to low $90 a pound NOW.
SOUNDS LIKE it's going to get worse/higher.

Yes we need to take care of our own country.. many people do not realize that Ukraine actually belonged to the USSR.. and that's how Putin feels that it's their country and they have a right to take it back.. at least that's how Putin sees it I don't see Putin trying to take over Finland or Sweden or anywhere else.. but Ukraine was formerly owned by Russia so why is it our business.. imagine if Arizona New Mexico and Texas decided to become their own country and break off from United States you think that we would allow that to happen? ..
It's mostly supplies, and not new production, but refreshing the storage by sending old stuff to Ukraine.
Powder is accessible, primers are there, shell casings too, same with bullets. A bit higher price true. But it's not your supplies sent. You can still hoard till the ceiling.
I bought all of my stuff when obama was installed. Primers were $50 a case. Powder was $100 for 8 pounds. Bought bricks of 22 for less than $15. If you can afford it, buy now for barter later, it will make a profit in the next couple years. Just be sure to sell, don't hoard. Be smart, pay your bills, buy food, and anything other people will want but can't get.
Whoever buys the biggest orders and pays the most gets ammo. Greed is the primary motivation for sellers.

A throwback to the range Karen- I was shooting a high power match during the first real .22 shortage in 2008 and overheard another shooter saying that he found some mom & pop store that had .22 ammo on hand and he took out a PERSONAL LOAN to buy all of it (something around 70,000 rounds of .22 Long Rifle).
One- will you ever shoot that much?

You don't know what you're talking about. I've shot over 10,000rds in the last 12 months. People that actually shoot rather than just flap their lips about it online go through a LOT of ammo. Especially rimfire.

I don't have to be anywhere to know that your comment "you will never shoot that much" is incorrect. I personally shoot about 10,000rds of rimfire a year. And I have acquaintances that shoot more than that.

My respect to both of you gentlemen, very well laid out information, with just cause shown. I’m 60 and a retired police officer and US Navy veteran. I have what I need for the next 20 years. If I life longer I’ll figure it out then. Thank you. And Roy I dug my Seacamp and NAA Guardian both in 32 acp out of the back of the safe for the evening dog walks.

You said the ammo manufacturers are paying 40% more for powder. Why am I seeing powder up 80 to 120% on the commercial market? Actually, you could argue it's a little more than that since you may only be able to buy some in pound jars where you might have bought 4 or 8 pounds jugs pre 2020.
Wholesale costs are what powder makers pay. A retailer who is paying more will increase his margin, hence the higher retail prices. Roy

A fun thing is that a lot of blackpowder enthusiasts make our own gunpowder and caps and cast our own bullits. And vwe build black powder guns. Pretty kooll. Aye?? im 80 and may never see ammo again. Dam😢😮😮😮
Some people don’t do it for a hobby. They do it to keep their skill set up couple thousand rounds a week not a hobby.

I bought a little extra ammo when things were getting tight. I didn't buy it to keep others from having it.
Shooting is a perishable skill. If you're going to stay at the level you are. You have to shoot.
If you hunt. You have to check zero. You have to practice. And if you do crop deportation you have to have ammo.
The people I use to do hog control with. The last time ammo went nuts. There was guys with just 5 round of 44 and 2 buckshot loads.
My extra help them get through. At least tge ones that had compatible guns.
Alot were my dads age that had a box or 2 of ammo on hand.
I have to say most stocked up when they could after that..
I have always believed you need to buy 500 rd when you buy a new gun. At the least if you're a serious shooter.
What I hated was the gouging on the second market.
There was a hardware store that sold ammo they stuck to there profit %. No mater the cost. They got shipments. They sold them. I was on there list for some. I do a lot of business with them not just ammo. So I got called when they got 20rd boxes of wi. Silver tip 9. It was 25 a box they had 2 cases and let you buy 2 boxes. Of course it sold out.
That night on the local gun fourm. You seen alot of 20rd boxs of st 9 for 50-75$

I remember when I first started hunting. Being around people that went through the depression.
At 7 I was given a 20 win 37. 1 box on #3 bs. Dad filled up a milk jug with water. Walk a way out no idea how far but guessing 30yd. He said put the bead on it at shoot.
I hit it ok your good to hunt. Southern dog deer hunting.
We you and I know no I wasn't.
They thought practice was a wast of shotgun shells. They werea bit better with rifles but not much.
With my kids they shot hundreds of rd before they hunted. With there hunting rifles not just 22lr and shotgun.
There's a big difference.
I had men tell me that handgun were usless past 25 yds. Yes they really thought that. And I soon realized it was because they didn't shoot enough to hit and they were shooting like the western stars of the 40's.
You should have seen my dad's face when I showed him I could hit a washing machine at 100ys with a single 6. I know thats not really that impressive.
I was 10. And he thought a handgun was usless for the most part. No practice and not many people shot them much here out side of leo's.

I understand what's being stated, but in the long run, it's not really our problem here to supply other countries who start wars, with millions of pounds of ammo, guns, planes, tanks, or anything else.!! Especially those who are non NATO members..!! Plus it isn't just military goods, its the depletion of our other vital resources, especially petroleum..!!
And especially to our Enemies.. China in particular..!!
When we are putting our own security at risk, by doing these things, including our border situations, it's no longer about helping others, it's about not losing our very own country's ability to survive and thrive.!! As to conservation of ammunition, I still have 200 rounds for my CC hand gun, that I purchased over 3 years ago...... I see no good reason for Anyone, to waste money shooting thousands of rounds a year or months, to keep prepared to defend themselves when it is most needed...!! Hobbyist..... Buy an interface game where you can play shoot millions of rounds on screen, and not spend a dime on real ammo..!!!I will save the other half of my 2 cents for later.!!
Ukraine did not start the war though. Both in 2014 and 2022 Russia attacked. It's never the 4x smaller country with 1/8 military who would start the wars. Always the big bully.

I don't get out to the range as much as I used to . But I went through my stock and was shocked to find out that I didn't have any 380 in the box. So I went to get some. I was surprised that I didn't have any and I normally keep some.
Excellent breakdown of the situation and well supported by data. (And Mama...) I try to shoot weekly, and had for years taken along a pistol and shot a box of 9mm or .38 when I was done doing my load development thingies. I now shoot maybe half a box. I'd kind of arrived at that when .22 and primers went through the roof. Nothing wrong with holding and squeezing !

It is foolish in the extreme to think that a video like this will not result in people buying a larger supply of ammo. You might as well yell "FIRE!" and then say don't run get a fire extinguisher.
I do agree with you that this is an issue which we all should have been able to see coming and that it is not the end of the world if we can't get powder, primers, bullets or loaded cartridges in the quantity we have been enjoying lately. This too shall pass. It really points out the fact that we need to build more production capacity and investigate other sources of cellulose for use in making powder. Hopefully someone with more financial resources than I possess will see an opportunity to create new jobs and earn more money by doing just that.
In the meantime, I have a huge stockpile of ammunition that I started building 25 years ago and continue to build even as I expend ammunition using a FIFO model for expenditures. Does that make me part of the problem? If it does, I don't really care. I tend to worry about my family, my friends and myself in that order. All of us are responsible for ourselves.
I agree with what you are saying completely. I wanted to at least try to put some water on the fire up front, but alas … as you say, they’ll all lose their minds and overbuy, then five years from now will be setting on ammo they paid too much for and can’t sell … Roy
Just like they do each time there is a possibility of an ammo shortage.
I have a few thousand rounds of .22 caliber, some just bulk but some decent quality.
I also have the same in 9mm, again some just bulk, some FMJ and only a few hundred defensive types. For my circumstances that is all I can do, based on a fixed income.
Much of my bulk and FMJ 9mm is stuff that I paid around 18 cents per round over the counter at my local Dunhams whenever it went on sale. I could not reload for that, even when the price of components was at normal levels. If I do see 9mm for less than 23-25 cents per round here, I might pick up a few boxes to replenish what I do use for practice. Most of my practice now is either dry fire or .22 caliber from my Ruger Mark IV, 22/45. I put a cheap red dot on it, so I could concentrate on trigger control, which has always been the thing that I have found degrades the most.
I was never a good rifle shooter, so I have a Mossberg 702 Plummeted with, again a cheap, 4x32 single power scope on it for small game hunting, and the practice that I do to become a better rifle shooter. Deer hunting was almost always with a 12 gauge shotgun, with slugs or 00 buckshot. In all my years of deer hunting I killed all but one with a shotgun, one with my Dad's 30/40 Kraig model 1898 sporterized. I love that gun and gave it to my youngest son who is into guns, with the understanding that it was to stay in the family. I said if he needed money, I would buy the gun from him rather than it leave the family.
Sorry about the length of this, I get carried away about things that I am passionate about.
People will panic buy no matter what you say. Human nature. Those of us who have been through these shortages since the 1990s stocked up years ago if they were smart . I will not shoot any less and I suspect my kids will still inherit one hell of a lot of ammo and components

The reasons why America has out-sourced just about every doggone thing that we all live on? The worthlessness of the Federal Reserve note, coupled with extremely stupid foreign trade agreements, and giant corporations who would rather take ANY MEASURE than go out of business, and finally a bunch of "centralized" processes of life.
It has to stop. It must stop. America needs to be self sufficient.
I like to practice every 2 weeks, at least a 100 rounds each trip. That’s 200/month or 2400 a year. Last drought lasted 2-3 years, before it started coming back.
Now you know what you need on-hand. Or tone it down a bit to save a few bucks until this is done. Roy

I heard the US has contracted with the Czech Republic to make ammo. I believe this is artillery shells and small arms ammo. We may not see it here tho, it may go directly to the countries needing it.

I really disagree with Bret’s opinion that most people want to hord so others can’t have any. I’m sure sometimes that is unfortunately the case. But I believe most of us reloaders just don’t want to ever run out of components for ourselves. I want lots for me and I hope all my fellow enthusiasts have lots also.
My favorite Russian loader, Barnaul ceased commercial manufacture as soon as the latest iteration of the Ukraine War heated up. The ban on Russian ammo is a bit meaningless.
If you don't own one yet get yourself a mantis system and you won't need to use ammo to practice and you can practice in your own home

Also speaking of protection of our homeland, how much of the resources produced in domestic munitions plants actually goes to our own military and to our "well regulated militia?" It's a joke. We send billions overseas to help guard countries that almost no American could find on a map, but we tear down our own border and give free train, plane, bus, truck transportation to only God knows terrorists to come on in, and free food, board, DL, cars, and jobs.

We have elected officials that are irresponsible in maintaining our go to war stocks as well as our manufacturing infrastructure. You never give away your ability to defend yourself. Of course this comment is an over simplified statement.
It's a tough strategy question- helping 'allies' versus maintaining our own supplies. If we don't help allies, our enemies grow stronger. Glad I don't have to make these decisions - BW
