I think it’s absolutely insane and ridiculous for “Americans” to speak of collecting ammo and prepping for war against fellow Americans. This is NOT Call of Duty nor is it the 1700’s. Yet, we wonder why the ATF are trying to make ridiculous changes for responsible gun owners. Reality is that all are NOT so responsible. Now I get it. The sad part is that they won’t come out and say it’s for these ignorant gun owners talking of prepping for war against fellow Americans. Now I get it.
I’ve been watching Dick Fairburn for quite a while. He isn’t incorrect about what he says in his videos. If America were to be attacked,powerless,gas/food shortages. Most people will not be able to survive for more than a week. That’s with no violence. With violence maybe a few days. I’ve heard people say that we will revert back to tribalism and everyone will work together. If SHTF was really happening. There won’t be any Kumbaya stuff going on. I study people and their behaviors. Even people in my area say they would pillage anything and anyone if something were to kick off. So you need to have every J.I.C. Item you can find like candles,🕯️,toilet paper 📄,food, fresh water, etc. Your house will be your A.O. Because it will be too dangerous to leave. Ammunition will have be plentiful so 1000’s of them would be ideal.
Think: no resupply, ever. Now how much ammo is enough? Remington etc probably won’t be giving the “little folks” any ammo. The government will own all the supplies if things get hinky.
@@ricosuave7102 Spot on. Americans banding together is a nice goal, but we're too selfish and disorganized to work together. Yes, some will. If we were actively working together in cohesive civilian/taxpayer units, we'd NEVER allow what's already been done to us to wreck our once great nation. We're constantly looking for someone else to solve problems for us. The ones we expect/pay to solve problems are the same bastards who created the problem. Real SHTF/WROL will be chaotic. We can help each other, but we're on our own. Use what you have. Do what you can. Stay frosty.
That’s a horrible way to live brother. I hope you surround yourself with like minded individuals that will not immediately resort to violence and plunder.
If you think this way you live in the wrong place or the wrong state of mind. You live in the wrong place if that’s the immediate reaction they are already those type of people or you live in the state of mind as you don’t like anyone and will not help anyone and you are the one that is the problem. Great point. You can't eat gold, but bullets will get you something to eat. I have long said the most valuable metals are lead, copper and zinc. The ammo made from those base metals will get you all the gold you're willing to take.
I managed to get my wife to listen to you about the amount of ammo to keep on hand. It worked thankyou. I can now go shopping for some more. Many thanks . I'm a newbie preper very interested in doing it the right way. Thanks. Will try and look for more videos of yours.
I've got between 7,000 and 8,000 rounds. Far more than I'll ever need. I'm an old man now and on top of that, on dialysis. So if society crashes, if the electric grid goes down and I can't get dialysis, I'm a dead man anyway. So all the ammo in the world isn't going to keep me alive.
I figure I'm good for a maximum of 6 months IF I can get that much diabetic meds stashed ahead. After that, a terrible way to die ... no thanks. I'll go out like John Wayne in the Shootist.
@@lockloadwithdickfairburn-cr1jb it's kind of funny. I had cancer, I thought cancer would get me. Then I developed diabetes. I thought diabetes would get me before cancer. Then I developed kidney failure. Now I believe kidney failure will get me before diabetes. Now I'm waiting for the next thing to come along that will overtake kidney failure on that mortality priority list. I do have some heart issues as well, but that so far has been kept under control. But that could always pop up and become the new number one on the list. With my multitude of health issues, I sometimes wonder why I even bother concerning myself with having a gun and ammunition collection and personal protection. But I guess it comes down to going out on my own terms, not someone else's.
Hey Mr. Fairburn, something that your viewers NEED TO KNOW about stockpiling the inexpensive .22 ammo, and basically ALL rimfire ammo. That I only learned by experience. My dad believed like you, and I, that you should buy .22 ammo every time it goes on sale. He kept it under his bed and in the closet in open top plastic containers in the original boxes. The majority of it was Remington Thunderbolt, and by testing, that by itself really made no difference. He just liked that ammo the best. Anyway, after he passed, I figured that I should see if it was still good. in some of the really old bricks ($5.00 a brick!) the brass cases had lost a little bit of their luster, but it all looked fine. However, It was not all good. The really old stuff had about roughly 5-8 cartridges in a 50 round box that were DEAD. And about that many again that fired, but did not have enough energy to cycle the semi-auto action of my rifle. The results were the same in my semi-auto pistol. and obviously, the newer the ammo, the less problems I had. When the price got up to $12.50 a brick, there were only a few that would not cycle the action, but only a couple in a brick that failed to fire. At that point, I went shopping for ammo cans. And every .22 shell I had and bought from then on went into ammo cans. And until it was gone, I ONLY shot up my dad's old ammo. My dad passed in 1985, and I shot his ammo until 1998. So IF anyone is going to long term store .22 ammo, I STRONGLY recommend using ammo cans, a vacuum food sealer bag w. desiccant, or maybe even double zipper freezer food storage (Ziplock) bags with a desiccant bag or two. but IMO, you HAVE to keep air away from .22 cartridges for long term storage.
One of the best ways to put up ammo for long-term storage is to fill a tight, steel ammo can with the ammo then put a small chunk of dry ice on top of the ammo (I put down a couple layers of carboard to protect the top layer of ammo from the cold). As the dry ice (solid co2) sublimates, it is heavier than air and will flow down into the can displacing the humid air. Once the dry ice has all melted, slowly lower the lid and snap it in place. No humidity or oxygen in the can. Most grocery stores keep dry ice.
Mk262 is too expensive for regular use. I zero all my 5.56mm guns for M193. People forget about suppressing fire. If a SHTF situation happens-- you're going to be burning through ammo.
"Suppressing fire" is for people with a big fat supply chain backing them up. That is, an army. For the rest of us, getting a lot of lead into the air is just not going to work very well. We had better aim our shots, if possible.
Buy it cheap and stack it deep…. I recently had an unexpected guest. He was Turkish Special Forces. He was driving my brothers car across the country so he was here and bored for 3 days. I was remodeling a room and I have a storm shelter in that room underneath an elevated floor. He decided to help me out and I needed to temporarily move my ammo for the remodel. He was absolutely jaw dropped when we started moving it and ammo can after ammo can was handed to him. He explained how they’ve had a dictator for 22 years and how their gun laws are. I explained our 2A and why we don’t have a dictator-yet. As social media and general media have successfully done, we have been split into “camps”. It’s interesting to see how the rest of the world sees “us” and how we see ourselves. Too much to go into, but the rest of the world is watching our degradation and our transformation. Both sides now are horrible for our future and if ya don’t see it, start thinking and if ya don’t wanna see it, stick your ostrich head back in the ground and keep that butt up-because you’re gonna be the first recipient. Good content. I have a duty “9” with light and laser and its sole purpose is to get me to either my tactical 20 ga or my AR, depending on the threat that’s presenting. One of the three is gonna work. The primary weapon I have keeps the threat out past 800 yards or farther.

my problen is owning so many different calibers. when i first started collecting i purchase what i liked ...now i am stocking up on 12 gauge, 22lr, 9, 308, 556 and 762x39 ....
Also, if some gun owners didn't learn anything from the great ammo shortage of 2020 then there is no advice that can help them. Great video friend, thanks for making it!
A 50cal Ammo Can packed with boxes of 22lr gets fairly heavy to carry. 50cal Ammo Cans of 308 or 556, not so heavy. Still heavy, just not as heavy. 9mm and 45ACP are fairly heavy. At 69yo, I won't be running anywhere carrying a 50cal can packed with ammo. Keep Prepping my friends.
As someone who became a part of this community in 2020 when things were scarce, I think it's important to buy the more exotic types of ammo during good times when it's available. Otherwise you may end up being stuck with just FMJ for defense.
Absolutely. FMJ stuff is abundant right now but premium loads for anything (rifle/pistol/shotgun) are still scarce. The companies produce to meet demand and the demand for several years has been for bulk, cheap, FMJ shooting ammo.
Thanks. As an old cop, I have to wonder how some of LaPierre's activity (and very possibly some board members as well) doesn't cross over the line to be criminal rather than civil. If I get elected that will be on my list of questions.
Bird shot will still tear up a bad guy at close range! Also, primed shotgun hulls and wads are crazy cheap and with a 7/8 oz LEE slug mold will keep you loaded with affordable slug loads for ever!
I think the shotgun is highly underrated. They are anti-drone weapons in Ukraine, and with rifled slugs and a smooth bore I can keep them on an eight inch pie plate at 100m. Not rifle accurate, but an ounce of lead will blow off chunks of flesh rather than just making a perforation.
The M-855 was designed for a 20 inch barrel. It is a decent round in that barrel, and similar results from an 18 inch barrel. That said, If you arent shooting a 20" or 18", then your best rounds are 77 grain OTM. This round is pretty much what you were talking about with Black Hills Ammo. IMI also makes a great Load in 77 grain OTM. After that I would use a 55 grain , M-193 bullet.
My thinking is similar to yours. Every 'encounter' will have a win/loss/tie result. If you lose it doesn't matter so far as your need for more ammo is concerned, so concern #1 is don't lose. Defensive planning is where I place my focus, in cooperation with like minded people around me. Successful defense will by default result in gear/ ammo becoming available. This is admittedly over simplified, but it is the core of my contingency planning, and I am well prepared. Good point about cheap but common ammo types that are valuable barter.
Hey Mr. Fairburn, I hope this message reaches you. I just ran across your channel on UA-cam by chance. I’ve just subscribed & liked your latest video, “How much ammo? I’m a retired senior & have always been a hunter & fisherman, mostly fresh water from the Sportsman’s Paradise of Louisiana. Pretty much been an NRA member most of my life . Yeah , they send me this cheap ball cap made in China to renew. But what does my money really do for me ? I found your video very informative & interesting & provided many good examples of quality, quantity, makers , loads & common sense dialogue. I also think it is high time we as Americans really take a good look at who we put in these board positions at a local , state & Federal level that really have our backs & concerns from a grass roots level . The common man or woman in a common community across America. Should I renew my membership to the NRA? Is it wrong to ask a question like this? I’m not in it to go to a fight, sure self defense thoughts cross my mind & should need be protecting my family. Anyway, just rambling but Thank you for your support & I enjoyed your video. I will follow more of your content. Comments
Thanks for watching. I am a Life/Benefactor member, so no annual cost (though lots of $$ to buy in to this level). Those of you who are annual members, I UNDERSTAND your reluctance to feed LaPiere's ridiculous spending habits and obvious siphoning of funds to his personal accounts. I believe his banishment and order to repay 4.4 million shows the organization has made a turn towards sensibility but many more members of the Board of Directors, who allowed his actions, need to go. Give the NRA a year or two and see if the ship can be righted.
We are about the same age and build. I couldnt agree more with 3mags.. I have a 3 mag shingle with an old 2qt canteen strap, on the front is a small med bag with tq and flashlight, 1 mag in the gun. Quick fast and to the point!
After watching your videos I have learned a lot. I got my first ar because of your videos! Could you do a video in the future about all the different optics, red dots, bus, scopes etc. Which one you would recommend. Appreciate all the hard work you do for us!
My standard mags would take 900 rounds. My higher capacity mags and drums are pushing 2000 rounds. Good for my AR carbine and pistol builds. Both .300blk and 5.56 ammo. The ammo for my dinky mags for my AR-10 6.5 Creedmore and bolt action are lots of $$$. Then all the G-17 builds have extended mags and drums. With the special trigger and slide I also have spare barrels and lots of mags. I never know how many I will carry from day to day. I can take the 22" PSA Marauders to church on Sunday. Or travel with a few G-17s in my waist. I travel on a three wheel cycle or a mobility vehicle. Both allow for lots of concealment. So my guess is 5,000 plus kept in various places. 5.56, 6.5 Creedmore, .300blk. 9mm, 12ga, .45acp, and .22lr.
Congratulations on reaching 20,000 subscribers! I am glad to hear that LaPierre is finally out at the NRA. I hope reform is, indeed, coming to the organization. Best of success to you in your bid to be on the board.
Question: Are you going to do a video on stashes? Everything. Ammo, rations, weapons, meds, Gear, cutlery, clothes and boots. Especially ammo for the Battle rifle. Many years ago (1967) I carried a Browning Hi-Power every day in only occasional combat. Mostly all I did was clean rust off of it every morning. Ended up trading it off for a Gustav M-45 SMG to a WW II vet Sergeant Major (he had a C.I.B. with TWO stars) who wanted something he could get home. He had 9MM ammo. I found out that by the time I needed a handgun there would be plenty of rifles laying around.
I saw some two-star CIBs when I was in, but DAMN few. That was a great line by the SGM Plumley character in We Were Soldiers ... referring to an M16 over his 1911: "Time comes I need one there'll be plenty lying around." Sam Elliott should have got the Best Supporting Actor for that film!
@@lockloadwithdickfairburn-cr1jb I got my CIB in November 1966 for action in August 1966. I do not watch or get lines from any Vietnam War movie. The Sergeant Major I had the most contact with was our Brigade Sergeant Major Paul Huff. 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. Talked with him several times when we had trouble from the REMFs. He had a GP small tent in which the bar was always open. Everybody in the Brigade was clean shaven. Huff had a mustache. Whenever Field Grade officers tried to bang heads with him, he reported to the General wearing the CMH. No more was heard about it.
You said a mouthful at the beginning of this video, talking about standardized loads vs hodgepodge. I have had to argue too many times about point of impact between these various bullets that we all tend to collect. They are basically useless for long range shooting. I certainly would NOT bet MY life on their accuracy. Sure... They will undoubtedly go bang and deliver a round downrange but had darn well hope that wasn't in Africa on a Cape Buffalo hunt. Thanks for the video!
Just stumbled upon your channel. I liked, subscribed, and dropping a comment as requested. Continue to fight the good fight and thanks for your service.
Once I decided on a duty round for my 9mm, I buyed once and cried once on a case just prior to covid. Now whenever I shoot up the box that was in my magazines every quarter I buy a new box. I look at that as basically a lifetime supply for me and the few spare sidearms that might get handed out to various siblings/cousins/in laws if it hits the fan semi long term. Did the same with FMJ except I cried four times and bought 4 times. 5.56 I use green tips and I’m still working on that. Though I have “enough”.
Did the same with .357 magnum given the number of them owned by members of the clan. Got a couple of them myself so who knows what we might actually standardize on as a group.
"Well how much do I need?" "Well I can't answer that question." What exactly is this video's title? There's 5 minutes and 37 seconds of my life I'll never get back ... I thought I might hear some words of wisdom but the answer was obvious before I tapped on this video. Well how much do I need? Answer: all of it!
I've found most center fired ammunition is all the same. However .22LR ammo is not. Some brands I avoid like the plague. I do a lot of Steel Challenge competitions. Always with .22LR pistols. Exclusively prefer the CCI Mini Mag .22LR. Mini Mag is the most consistent and reliable ever, no exceptions, of all brands. I avoid any brand of .22LR ammo that has a wax coating. This includes Ely 22LR ammo that is supposedly used for Olympic shooting events. Wax coating is usually found on lead only bullets. CCI Mini Mags are FMJ copper plated. For long term storage get dependable .22LR ammo.
From personal experience, I can tell you not to waste your money on plastic ammo cans. Even with rubber seals, they are not water tight. The handles will not hold up to the full weight of a filled can. Spend the extra money on the GI cans and have that piece of mind.
I could not agree more, on most of your comments. I even have my go to revolver, and rifle in the same calibre round the 357mag.. I shoot weekly (both) and train with both. I purchase the same load for both. Train with the same load (full load) for both. I purchase them at 500 a time... I have seen ammo dry up... I also keep (rotate it through) 500 in a no touch can it stays at that level period ... The other calibres well lots of cheap stuff and about 100 good stuff for each cal ... great point of the mags, I use drop pouches .... I also reload the tougher to find ammo , in short great video thanks
As a life member of the NRA, I have been disappointed with them over the past few years. I am encouraged that you are making the effort to get on their board and be a change for good. You have my support. I enjoy your channel and also am concerned where our country is going with these leftists in DC. I have been stocking up .45acp, 12 gauge and .556 over the past few years because of the left attack on our rights. Being prepared includes not just ammo, but also food and water. Thank you for your informative video content.
Good vid there. I like you keep a couple hundred rounds in .45 ACP and 9mm self defense ammo. However my storage is all FMJ including my 5.56. At that point it will still do the job.
I watched this with a different expectation. The focus was primarily alphabet and numbers/nomenclature on various military loadings. For me, I have an almost ancient Colt AR A1, no forward assist; and truthfully, I have never needed it. No other military firearms so all those pointers about various issues didn't do me a heck of a lot of good. Yes you mentioned; "can't have enough 22 rim fires" and a couple tips on shotshells. What I was expecting and did not hear, is how much commercial ammunition do you recommend for things I DO OWN, like 38 Specials for my Model 36, how much 243 and 270 should I stockpile? In other words, a stockpile for the assortment of commercial civilian guns I have accumulated in a lifetime. Like, is there any point in stockpiling for a 40S&W and is my 243Winchester worth having so much 80 grain and 100 grain? Is there any point in keeping ANY 25'06 on hand, if nobody wants it even for trade. I'm looking at this, when the balloon goes up, can I defend myself with what I got or am I off on a tangent and if I sincerely believe in civil unrest, the only defensive firearms that matter is military stuff that I have studiously avoided for my entire hunting career? See what I'm driving at; and am I kidding myself, just let Dick Fairburn handle it?
The 52gr. Sierra Matchking BTHP is the most consistent, precision projectile out of my .22-250, by far! About 3500 fps out of 26" Savage, heavy barrel .
Proper m855 absolutely has a steel core rod... pro tip... pmc xtac is most accurate m855 offering available... cheers..... also, many bad dudes have met their demise from said load from various MK12s in the wild.... enjoy
The reason I started making aluminum bullet tips is I bought some 45acp aluminum tip hollow point and the velocity says 1800 fps. Because the bullet tip weighs only 90 gr. And they will decentergrate a water Melon. Where a standard 45 acp hollow point just blows a hole the size of a softball out the back side! That's why I started experimenting with aluminum and my lathe making other bullets that really dumped there energy all at once! I think that's best for home defense and not going through any harm anymore else! Those bullets i bought for my 45 ACP makes a massive hole when they hit and pretty deep also!. I could imagine what a 12 ga aluminum slug that opens up would do !
It shouldn't just be a war reserve for your fighting weapons that you should be stockpiling ammo for. Some rounds can do double duty for hunting and combat (7.62×51, etc.). And I always consider the barter potential of ammo. But also think about what will be the day-in, day-out necessity for taking small-to-medium game during and after the bloodbath: .22LR. I keep at least as much of it as any centerfire pistol, rifle, or shotgun load. And I agree with limiting pistol ammo. It's not your main combat weapon, and is best used to get out of ordinary street-crime jams, or extricate yourself if your rifle fails.

As a young person just getting into firearms and ammo, I will say that your videos have been a massive wealth of knowledge and information that I otherwise would not have gotten elsewhere. Keep up the good work and God bless you.
Approach life with an open and enquiring mind and you will go far.
You need to get on the fast track about supplies and knowledge. We may be down to days before we're all on our own.
You are one of the best. I always enjoy your videos. I'm a patron member. I've been an NRA member for almost 50 yrs. You have my vote. If we can get enough folks like you on the board, we can right the ship. God bless you and yours.

I really enjoy watching your videos. Although I don't agree with you 100% of the time, I do a majority of the time and you are very knowledgeable. You can tell in your presentations your not the typical you tube commando lol. You bring a wealth of real experience to your viewers. I'm also a veteran, never been to a war zone but I wore the uniform for 6 years. Keep up the good work and I look forward to more videos.
Agreeing with me 100% might be a sign of a slight mental problem. Thanks for watching.
Yea, like putting his optic all the way on the front, lol
Ideally I would like 3-7 years of ammo. A pallet, barrel, or around 5-20k rounds.
In shtf ammo is the most valuable thing besides food.
You do rate food above pew pew projectiles so I do not totally disagree with you: but for others, you cannot eat bullets and if you plan to barter bullets for food you are not going to last very long. That said I agree you should have enough freedom seeds to keep your own safe.
Ammo - food - and, though I don't drink,
alcohol. You'll need something to trade. 🇺🇸

EXCELLENT professional information, thank you Mr. Fairburn!
This was pretty much the same thing I was thinking about. Stock up and shelter in place. Protect what is yours.
Reevaluate please
Beans and bullets. Ammo better than gold.

Bill, stay strong. Godspeed.
I figure I'm good for a maximum of 6 months IF I can get that much diabetic meds stashed ahead. After that, a terrible way to die ... no thanks. I'll go out like John Wayne in the Shootist.
@@lockloadwithdickfairburn-cr1jb I'm also diabetic, but that's not as severe. The kidney failure will get me long before the diabetes does.
I have a friend in dialysis and I don't know how he has the strength to endure it. God Bless you, sir.

Thanks for the comment. I’ll be following your advice to protect my investment and insure I’ve got reliable stock if and when it’s needed,
Steel ammo can with absorbant, silica,Amazon sells it , also climate control, indoors if possible. I have had ammo for 20 plus years just fine.
Mk262 is too expensive for regular use. I zero all my 5.56mm guns for M193. People forget about suppressing fire. If a SHTF situation happens-- you're going to be burning through ammo.
Palmetto has aac
My AR has a 20inch barrel so the M193s will perform just fine out of it, as it was designed for.
Same.
@@Dread_Pirate_HomesteaderAac?
"Suppressing fire" is for people with a big fat supply chain backing them up. That is, an army. For the rest of us, getting a lot of lead into the air is just not going to work very well. We had better aim our shots, if possible.

I loaded over 3500 rounds of handgun/levergun ammo some years back, mostly hardcasts. Doubt I'll run out, given my age. Enough to hunt if needed.
I like the way you think.
I have been an an NRA member for years. Never again. Great info I this video. Thanks for sharing.
Great news! Unfortunately I no longer support that group. However you are exactly what we need! I might sign up just to vote for you. Keep it up!
For the rest of your life. Stockpile for that.
Patron Member here. Stlll annoyed by LaPierre's criminal beavior and the betrayal of the "insiders" in leadership. You'll have my vote Dick.
Congrats on the nomination! You'd be great
Thank you.
I agree with all you say.
At least 1k per rifle and handgun
that’s what my goal is.
Thank you! Wish you well.
Hey Mr. Fairburn, I hope this message reaches you. I just ran across your channel on UA-cam by chance. I’ve just subscribed & liked your latest video, “How much ammo? Thanks for watching. I am a Life/Benefactor member, so no annual cost (though lots of $$ to buy in to this level). Those of you who are annual members, I UNDERSTAND your reluctance to feed LaPiere's ridiculous spending habits and obvious siphoning of funds to his personal accounts. I believe his banishment and order to repay 4.4 million shows the organization has made a turn towards sensibility but many more members of the Board of Directors, who allowed his actions, need to go. Give the NRA a year or two and see if the ship can be righted.

My chest rigs and plate carriers are all set up with six 30 round rifle magazines, three pistol magazines, IFAK, canteen, etc.
Congratulations on reaching 20,000 subscribers! I am glad to hear that LaPierre is finally out at the NRA. I hope reform is, indeed, coming to the organization. Best of success to you in your bid to be on the board.
Thank you.

What exactly is this video's title?
Excellent presentation, thank you for your time and effort sharing this important information.
Great fatherly advice
You're welcome my son (LOL).
Keep up the good work Dick. Don't forget about Jesus
From personal experience, I can tell you not to waste your money on plastic ammo cans. Even with rubber seals, they are not water tight. The handles will not hold up to the full weight of a filled can. Spend the extra money on the GI cans and have that piece of mind.
You have my vote Sir...

Good advice. I’m a retired vet with many years of service - I might disagree in some details, but I’d say this is sound advice.
Flight control shotgun loads? Yes, you can stretch it to 50 yards with the right barrel set-up. But no farther.
