Instagrammers Are Killing This Field Of Poppies (HBO)

- Опубліковано 23 сер 2024
- The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve has a few rules: Don’t bring your dog to the park, don’t eat food along the trail, and don’t fly drones overhead. The most important? Stay on the trail. But during this season’s super bloom, a semi-rare outbreak of golden poppies in spring, staff at the reserve have had a difficult time making sure swarms of kids, families, and models posing for Instagram follow along without trampling the delicate wildflowers.
On a typical day, the park sees about 60 visitors. During super bloom season that number skyrockets to around 2,000. Jean Rhyne, who has been an interpreter at the reserve for 13 years, has been vocal about the long-term impact this can have on the park’s natural wildlife.
“This park was created specifically because of the poppies that are here,” Rhyne told Vice News, “And if they get stepped on or sat on to take a picture in [...] it compacts the soil and then the roots from the seeds of the next year can't get in. So we'll have scars in the habitat for many years to come. ”
Super blooms in California tend to occur about once a decade on average, dependent upon heavy rainfall and favorable temperatures, but this season is the second the reserve has seen in three years. In 2017, there was what Rhyne calls the “Apopalypse,” when park staff first saw a significant and unexpected rise in visitorship, most of whom were drawn there for social media.
Since then, the reserve has tried to adapt, hiring staff from other California State Parks, providing numerous trails and walkways, and even using their hashtag #DontDoomTheBloom to inform people about the potential harm before they visit.
But this hasn’t deterred people from getting their perfect shot. Fewer than 300 Instagram posts have the #DontDoomTheBloom tag while more than 147,000 are tagged #superbloom. 45,000 have the hashtag #CaliforniaPoppies.
This year has also brought some unique problems. In March, a pair landed a helicopter in the middle of a field of poppies. When a park ranger approached the couple, they ran back to the helicopter and fled. The reserve responded to the incident in a since-deleted post on Facebook: “We never thought it would be explicitly necessary to state that it is illegal to land a helicopter in the middle of the fields and begin hiking off trail. We were wrong.”
Rhyne, on the other hand, was not surprised. “You just never know what's going to happen out here,” she said. “People do weird things.”

@Jonathan Edward The main issue is mega corporations destroying and polluting the environment and governments subsidizing them and giving them tax breaks to continue doing so. Then both the mega corporations and the governments try to pin 100% of the blame onto consumers. While the general population does share some of the blame we need to start penalizing these companies and corporations for this disgusting behavior. It would help if people would stop consuming so many useless, processed, prepackaged products from these companies, and instead turned towards more sustainable, higher quality options such as glass tupperware, and metal straws instead of plastic.

@@goat8219 No... this guy's probably just scarred by seeing many disrespectful extroverts foolishly destroy everything around them. Unfortunately, because extroverts are much more common than introverts there's automatically a higher number of disrespectful people. There's technically also automatically more respectful extroverts as well... But all types of humans have a higher chance of disregarding others, so while the proportions of each group are similar, population size is not. You are more likely to see disrespectful extroverts simply because there are more extroverts as a whole.
As for actually enjoying company with others... We usually enjoy spending some time with our loved ones, but it's physically exhausting to socialize for extended periods of time. It's not even anything against individuals, it's just harder for us to keep up with social interactions. We need plenty of time alone, not because we hate people but because social interaction is more tiring to us for some reason.

Just give the rangers paintball guns.
-Biodegradable
-no injuries
-ruins any photos you plan on being in
After a week of parasites getting painted they will stop showing up and destroy something else.
the dude doing the flip makes my blood boil for some reason 💀
Imagine fining everyone and using that money to perserve
that would be awesome
Umm...
That's great
Good idea.
Agreed. With this sort of fines, it would be easier to maintain the park by hiring more crew.
Damn. People are so self-absorbed. This is sickening.

Welcome to the Instagram generation.
I only see millennials
@@jipsels Were in Generation Z now dude. The oldest age of a Gen Z is 24 now. You know the people who are more obsessed with phones and social media than any generation before them.
Yep -don’t you mean 20 years because gen z starts in 1999 so most of them are millennials
Some reluctant respect to Vice for condemning the actions of their core audience.
"more photos of being one with the earth" as she is stepping & sitting on the poppies LMAO
but why was thAT GUY DOING A BACKFLIP IN THE POPPIES
WHY?!
Every poppy should experience a backflip at least once before they die.
Backflips are cool. Poppies are cool. Back flips in poppies is cooler.
@@eriktruchinskas3747 roflmao. :)
Erik Truchinskas as a former man bun person that has never back flipped on poppies I’m offended
I am Nobody right rotfl
Hope the flowers adapt and become poisonous.
I love your profile 😍 ichi best boi
Its were opium comes from, too good to be bad
@@TheCrappyZipper No opiates in this species of poppies. But their extracts are pretty powerful sedatives.
@@kaylapeters7993 wow good to know, I thought all poppies had opiates in them. Thanks for educating me
TheCrappyZipper I knew that because I have some, they are very hard to grow due to them being super fragile, but once they're good the spread super fast
why can’t they simply stand in front of it…..like cmon y’all
Yea, just take a selfie by the trail
This is when we realized thanos was right about wiping out half of the Universe.
So they are destroying a habitat, so they can have a photo portraying themselves being one with the earth?
this pisses me off on so many different levels...
Hypocrisy at its finest. I just want to find all their pictures and start a rant about how they’re the problem.
@@evilsharkey8954 i want to stab them all
Probably hashtag themselves as environmentalists too :(
They'll be one with Earth after their deaths
This is kinda like an incident in China where people destroyed rare pink grass because they wanted to take pictures
Pink grass what?
Happens in vietnam as well
I've read about the beach where that Leonardo DiCaprio movie The Beach was filmed has been destroyed by people. Coral reefs damaged and garbage left everywhere
1dogissky OMG ME TOO! It was so freaking sad because it was so beautiful(I’ve only seen pictures)
steve crawford or we could educate 8 billion people and set up things to PREVENT further destruction or our planet. It’s beautiful, and “getting used to it” doesn’t help anyone at all!
"Dont doom the bloom" Thats some plants vs zombies type stuff right there.
Bruh how are yall not bored of posting photos everyone has seen before
“So why did you decide to lie down on a field of beautiful poppies, ultimately trampling and destroying them?”
“Uhhhh it look good”
Start handing out fines and use that money to make a fence to keep people out
But a fence would defeat the purpose of the park
@@Xiox321 Could instead use the fines for the general upkeep and staff.
@@Vegan_Kebab_In_My_Hand
Yea that'd be good use of it. Plus they could also put it toward creating those ankle high path rails, it doesn't obscure anything, isn't overly apparent, and it would keep a lot of people from going off the path.
Build the wall! But seriously, if they issue a big enough fine or potential jail time (same as harming endangered species)people will not risk it for a photo.
Build the wall!
"We were very careful about where we put our stuff" as the entire area they're sitting around had trampled poppies.
Way to go society! You get that photo op!
That guy doing back flips cmon 🤣😭
When your only skill is looking a little above average
Meh, 99% of them have makeup and dont even look average, especially those weebos girls
Social media in a nutshell
The unwritten tag line in most all "Influencers" Bios
THIS
I had to share this comment, you rule
Love how it ends with the influencer saying that they were very careful with protecting the lands and her friend stomps down on a flower after popping her bottle.
Yup. So stupid and vain...
Talk about bad influence. And a made-up title.
There will come a time where we can only appreciate nature through pictures.
Realistically probably gonna happen in a few thousand years (maybe 10,000)
They are gorgeous. I'd never ever step on a flower.
Instagram and entitlement go so well together.

I remember the good old days where people used to enjoy nature by simply going there, without worrying about likes on Instagram. I guess I'm just a boomer.
let's boom together: I also love how they are so different, when taking polaroids to put them on instagram.
I remember those days too. Low IQ humans need attention to validate the lack of depth in their soul. The age of narcissism is upon us 😟
Middle schooler here. It's extremely upsetting how students I've once known from elementary are now vaping, puckering their lips, putting on filters while trying to desperately scrape some likes on Instagram. At this point, I'm not even shocked by how egoistic and self-centered some people on social media can be.
I guess I'm a boomer too haha.
Here to claim my boomer spot as well
I wouldn't have stepped on flowers for pictures, they look so beautiful.
