Simply amazing how Angelina as a 12 year old child can totally transform a well known song to make it her own yet honor the original this way. She never fails to amaze me and obviously you too. One can tell she amazes Ivan the same way she does us. Ivan has stated he always felt like her audience when playing for her, that he couldn't believe he was sitting next to such a wonderful singer. Great reaction and thank you. Always on the edge of my seat waiting for more from this amazing young lady
Of course I don’t know Ivan’s economic situation nor his professional aspirations, but when I heard that he chose to stop accompanying Angelina due to scheduling conflict with his full-time work; I can’t help but feel that was a regrettable decision.
@@dojoswitzer I agree, a very soulful guitar player. Absolutely love the recordings h’s done with Angelina. But I think he stated once that he would never reach the stage of excellence needed for Angelina. He was certainly there emotionally!

Just adding; it was Ivan Mendez who played the guitar in California Dreaming.
Her haunting, wistful, soulful rendition is every bit as captivating as it was in 1965 when the Mamas and Papas song was popularized and reached the top 5 in the charts. Mama Cass, who sang it originally recorded it as "I began to pray", until Michelle Phillips, the writer of the phrase later corrected her that it was written "I pretend to pray". So Angelina did the original verse and not the popularized one. Angelina literally breaths new life and feeling into this song with her rendition.
Not only did she transform a classic song into a haunting ballad, she did it all while wearing a Donald Duck sweatshirt! Only Angelina can do this. I'm glad you enjoyed it - even the very first word gave me goosebumps!

Ivan Mendez was Angelina's (12y) guitarist in LA in 2018. In an interview with Alan Papier on his UA-cam channel, Ivan told the story of how the cover came about. In a nutshell "Angelina doesn't have a wish list of songs, she decides spontaneously if she likes a song. After hearing this song she says great song and has downloaded the lyrics. Then Ivan played the melody and Angelina says" good but slower, slower , even slower. OK, well, let's start ". Then the cover was recorded in one take, Angelina sang the song here for the first time after her arrangement without rehearsing beforehand. 💯 *AJ* 💯
Since my early, and lucky, discovery of AJ singing Gloomy Sunday, I was totally mesmerized and bewildered on how she could be so good at such a young age. After seeing the interviews with Egil and Ivan I have been completely dumbfounded. For me, it's useless to try to understand the how. I just admire her.
@@mikehaun5690 I often categorize AJ as a savant lacking the typical other impairments. (Industrialization gives our language only crude metaphors for comparison of artistic abilities: she has a music machine inside her.)
For most of us, when we hear well formed music, then we feel it sounds good. I think when Angelina thinks music, it is formed well from the start. I don’t think she needs to ‘try this’ and ‘try that’ to assess which sounds better, like many other people do. She hears or knows before she utters anything.
(From an interview I recently saw, I believe the long-time music composer for Steven Spielberg has this too, but he doesn’t sing.)
@@dojoswitzer Could be, DJ, although aside from music, she seems to be quite talented in many other ways... not just lacking the typical impairments but very good at whatever she sets out to do... along with the indefinable "it factor".

At 12, The surviving member of the "The Mamas and The Papas" Michelle Phillips, was so impressed with Angelina's version, she posted the link to it on the official website, with additional comments of praise. Another loss to the music Industry was Mama Cass Elliot. It was written by John and Michelle Phillips. The Mamas and the Papas sang back up on the Original version of 1965!
Her voice is velvet, floating on a wave of liquid honey. 🌸

I enjoy your reactions to Angelina so much. You express what we feel... As you say, this is perfection... While she was 12 she did so many amazing performances with Ivan. The setting's simplicity and impromptu arrangement perfectly highlight Angelina's incredible talent. So many reactors skip over these beautiful performances, while she was 12 and 13. They focus instead on her childhood magic and her current performances where shes truly reaching maturity as an artist... It was these "middle years" where we are gifted to observe her development from a child prodigy to the best vocalist in our lifetime. This is where she perfected her skills which amazed the world in her breathtaking performance on AGT.

Some of the inflections Angelina adds to this song makes me feel like an old western/southwestern movie setting with Mexicans and Gringoes, seemingly appropriate for an old song about California.
California Dreamin is one of my all-time favorite songs. I grew up with the music of the 60’s, and the Mamas and the Papas had such a unique sound that their music was immediately recognizable after just a few seconds. Angelina once again re-interprets an untouchable classic and makes us understand the melancholy lyrics in a way the original never tried to do. In that sense, it’s like her Bohemian Rhapsody. It doesn’t compete with the iconic original version, but gives us a new way to love it.
Angelina-in just an impromptu moment, knocks this off and gives me a beautiful, nostalgic, haunting version of a song I have played and loved for 50 years. The best singer I’ve ever heard…

The genius in AJ’s cover of this classic song is how she uses riffs and runs to touch on the harmonies of the original, just enough so our brains hear the harmonies layered on her solo vocals.
Many will try to mimic her; anyone who comes close will have an astounding, maybe compulsive, work ethic.

The choices Angelina makes for how to sing each song, are simply beautiful. For her, it is ALL about telling the story the song was meant to convey.

Hello Adrianna. Beautiful to watch you "re-discover" Angelina 😅 I know this may sound very cliché, but it is OH so true - Every time you think that you've got her number, she will prove you wrong. It's as if she says "Hello, Adrianna, I can do THIS too, if you didn't know." And on a personal note I have to add that she can do a whole plethora of other amazing things with her voice as well. I can tell you that because I know. I would have liked to highlight that "I" but it is in capital letter already...LOL It's still a bit too soon to call it quits with your Sunday reactions to her. Angelina's musical vision transcends the ordinary and she always manages to give an interpretive reading that makes us better understand and love the songs, in any age she is. I have never listened to this until now. I love the José Feliciano version so much. This is more a Joan Baez style rendition. Interesting, but it doesn't touch me.
Tastes differ, thank God. Otherwise the world would be boring and grey. I didn't know Jose Feliciano, I did it immediately, the studio recordings and a live performance. Interesting but not my taste. You can't compare music, it's always subjective. Michael Philipp , the last member of the Mamas and Papas, was delighted with Angelina's arrangement and wrote her high praise for her performance on social networks. Angelina (here 12y) heard this song for the first time that day and immediately downloaded the lyrics. She then set the tempo of the melody for guitarist Ivan Mendez and the recording was awarded in just one take after her arrangement and without rehearsals. According to Ivan Mendez in an interview, this entire process takes less than an hour. I've heard many statements from the biggest music producers and many of the most successful musicians about Angelina's talent but never that Angelina sounds like Joan Baez or uses Joan Baez style. 😊😊
@@albertphilippi4371 I wasn't implying that her vocals were specifically like Baez, but the motion and the vibe are similar to a Baez setting. I love Baez, and I love most of AJ's covers, but this was one that I did not connect with. (I knew the Feliciano version from an album my mum had when I was young. It was later used effectively by Tarantino in Once upon a time in Hollywood. I love the spanish vibe of that version.)👍
Preconceptions often impact feelings about songs. Are you aware this is not a professionally produced release? It is a young girl jamming in her living room and creating a wonderful emotional variation of this song.
@@gumimat1 - Hello MatthewI. Please don't go all pompous and self-righteous on me. It is not a good look. - I have been listening to AJ for a long time. Probably 3 years, and I have loved almost everything I have heard. My personal favourites are her versions of Sam Smith songs. However, occassionally a cover does not work for me, such as her version of 'Yesterday', and I avoid certain songs that I dislike anyway, such as "The show must go on". This one was one that I avoided because I suspected it was not her optimum idiom. Finally I gave it a shot, and I was right as to my instincts. It does not move me. Now, when I say that, I am not saying it is not technically fine, merely that unlike so many of her covers, it doesn't stir me. I presume that is allowed, or are you one of those wild-eyed Quixotic AJ fans who takes it upon themselves to smite anyone who is not praising every single performance to the absolute hilt?
