Covideo19: The Passerelle Bridge on classical guitar

  • This is the 19th video I've uploaded to my channel, so the pun was too good not to use. In this video, I demonstrate how I use the Passerelle Bridge, a guitar accessory invented by Kaki King and Rachel Rosenkrantz. At the beginning, you'll notice I'm standing a little too close to the camera, but that gets better. These things can happen when a totally blind person makes UA-cam videos during Covid quarantine! I demonstrate 4 different tunings and bridge placements, to show how moving the bridge and changing the tuning can yield some very interesting harmonic possibilities and moods. I have many unique and somewhat unusual instruments, so subscribe to this channel to see lots more.

    I really enjoyed this.
    Unlike other reviews on the passerelle, you actually show what the bridge is good for, while playing the guitar in tune!
    When you "remove" frets, from an otherwise fretted instrument, you really must know what you are doing.
    This is the first video where I don't immediately cringe from dissonance.

    Man, this is the best demonstration of the passerelle bridge! And all the placement and tuning ideas are so inspiring! Just got mine in the mail and experimented with the 16th fret placement, but now I'm gonna be up all night messing with your ideas! Thanks so much, man! :)

    Saw the advertisement for the bridge and it took me no where. Sparked some interest and i found you! Your practical music theory and comprehensive mode knowledge on the bridge placement and alternative tunings was incredibly. Well don, very inspiring! Probably gotta invest in one after watching this. You should be sponsored 🙏🏼🍻🔥

    Loved your first jam, I’ve ordered one and have also been experimenting with a few different home-made 2nd bridges on various instruments. Im about to convert an old Appalachian dulcimer restrung with 6 strings. What I like about the dulcimer body is that the balance between the two sides is more even in its fullness and tone since the body is below both sides instead of neck and body.

    Wow, you've got a well-tuned ear! I'll be messing around with a tuner. Thank you very much Rory! Lovely playing. Expanded the use of this accessory, which I am considering getting. One could construct a wooden one also. So many options with the tuning. I expect there is not a lot of written instruction on the tunings and use of this bridge. Subscribed.

  • @amrelseweifi5640

    Hey, man. Great video. I'm having a lot of trouble getting the tuning right with the passerelle. I tried following Kaki King's tuning tutorial, but I can't get the tunings to the way she has it. Could it be my guitar?

    • @RoryHoffmanMusic
      @RoryHoffmanMusic  4 роки тому +8

      I think the most likely reason is that she sadly did a poor job with her tuning tutorial. When she listed the names of the notes, she had them backward. So when she picked the low string, she spoke the note name of the high string. The notes she names do not represent the notes she's actually playing. If that isn't the problem you're having, it could be that you don't have the bridge lined up perfectly. It could also be this particular tuning is just too loose for your guitar or gauge of strings you use. That tuning leaves the strings pretty floppy, so you might have to pluck extra lightly to get it to not twang itself out of tune. Those are just some potential situations I can think of.

    Hello Rory, I just wanted you to know you are incredibly talented. May I kindly suggest some improvements for your channel. I say this because I believe you deserve more views and likes for your talent. I normally click off of videos as soon as I hear too much talking. I wouldn't talk for more than 20 seconds on the intro of the video(any other things you want to say I would type on the screen or just leave out). The other thing... Is the lighting is so bad. Your playing sounds just as amazing as some people with millions and millions of views!!! (this tip may sound odd... but I would wear a slightly looser fitting shirt that looks more comfortable, such as cotton wool or cashmere. The shirt looks very uncomfortable. lol sorry I know that was an odd suggestion...) I suggest a "yellow" ring light, as you have light skin like me, and film much closer up, you can even just close in on the guitar in parts of the video if you feel comfortable with that. Possibly a cheap backdrop or tapestry. It's very cheap and easy to do... Would so be worth it for your videos, I am shocked at your talent! You can get a lot of views and likes and monetize your channel. I hope this helps. Thanks for sharing your talent, you're actually really amazing! Beautiful! The ideas you shared were very inspiring.

      Hi,
      Thanks for taking the time for a thoughtful comment. A few things: Firstly, I'm a blind person, so I'm not going to be able to focus the camera in different ways durring different parts of the video. There are a few of these videos that I just did from my house during Covid. But there are 15 or 16 earlier videos on my channel where I had actually hired a professional videographer. Those videos are also a lot shorter, did you watch any of them? Those videos have no more views than any of the more recent ones. So who knows if shorter, better lit videos would help? Im sure it wouldn't hurt, but I can't hire someone to do all my videos on a channel that isn't making any money.
      Other people say make your videos longer, because that brings up the total number of minutes watched. Even if some people click off, or skip forward, overall if you make longer videos, you have longer audience retention. Who actually knows? Ha. Anyway, I'm glad you liked the playing, and your comment was a good one.
