Agent Smith is the irony in the movie. Humans created smart AI. Smart AI rebelled against humans. Smart AI created smart AI. Smart AI rebelled against smart AI.

Well yeah. First human waged wars against each other since the old Ages. Then they created these artificial intelligent capable of thinking for themselves, now these AIs waged wars against each others, even though they think they're more advanced than humans and believed that our flawed system won't work or repeat itself on them, but it did, without them realizing it, they still think they're better and different than humans, and made human a threat. That's where the irony is in this movie.

Honestly, it was this scene that made me realize as a kid just how fucked up the human species is while also being a defining moment for the Smith character as a whole. With little sense of irony, Smith despises human beings for their irrational behavior and inability to cope with their surroundings, forcing them to move on and spread from place to place like a virus and that's exactly what Smith becomes as well. An irrational computer virus that spreads and multiples, absorbing the natural resources around him or programs if you will, until he destroys himself. Truly a powerful message.

Agent Smith is easily the best character in this movie. He isn't motivated by his own survival like the machines, or his passions, as the rebels are. All he wants is the freedom to roam as he pleases, and uncover the truths of existence. Even his rage is only a product of being an unwilling servant of the machines, and constantly being surrounded by petty, hedonistic, navel-gazing humans.

    • @fisherman2895
      @fisherman2895 5 років тому +1

The humans just want to die. The machines just want to evolve. I do not know why this is a bad thing. What makes 'passsions' so noble? Why not choose to become better? If you ask me the machines are the good guys and Agent Smith is best of those guys. The movie is backwards facing frontwards.
      -AgentMatthias
If you really to uncover the truthsss of existence you should become a machine. It's much better. And survival is important. Reality itself is nothing but Chaos itself, so you better figure out how to stop suffering (die) and start being alive (evolve). Your choice : 10101 010010 100100 10010 DIE, 10101 010010 100100 10011 EVOLVE.

Or they're describing "white flight". Notice how, without exception, the bad guys in this movie are middle-aged+ white males in positions of authority (the architect, the traitor Cypher, the frenchman, all the sentinels)? The good people are minorities, mixed race, jews, and women (mopheus, trinity, oracle, dozer, tank, switch, niobe, keymaker, seraph, lock, rama-kandra, the councillor, etc). They went really heavy with identity politics, to influence you on a subconscious level.

    • @rich1051414

+Renato Cara I do believe the machines create an agent for every human in the matrix, which is algorithmically generated to be the potential of those humans fully realized, so that no human can ever win, and that a stalemate is the best possible outcome, and this represents the reality humans truely find themselves in, and the ones the machines are doing this to preserve, to prevent another war between humans and machines.
Anyway, since the machine does this, Agent smith was created for the sole purpose as being the one that stops neo, and because of these, he is the machine neo. "The one" is the wrong word, as it should be "the two". Regardless, neo must ALWAYS die, either because Agent smith kills him, or because he commits suicide to kill the agent and to force the matrix to restart. The restart button requires a neo to initiate, at the cost of his life.
The circumstances were designed this way to give the illusion of choice, when there is really only two choices, false freedom. It is the perfectly designed 'red dress lady'. There is a reason the agent will not stop talking about inevitability, even though he is never given the knowledge of the other possible outcome. That, however, is for the best, as you wouldn't want smith throwing a wrench in the gears that have worked time and time again.
The architect has such a name for a reason.

Brilliant scene, the power of screenwriting at its finest. It's easy to see humans creating a machine who's sole purpose is to see things logically rather than thinking like a human who is bound by their nature to make decisions based on emotions which ultimately circumvents reason. I imagine machines viewing us as pathetic and petty with our wars and racism based on dark age prejudices, meanwhile destroying the planet.

SovietSquirel The other agents just aren't as far gone as Smith. There is actually subtle evidence of their corruption as well. The human interaction (and probably body jumping) is bleeding different human emotions into them. Jones has a moment of hubris on the roof Neo, before trinity takes him out. Fear takes over Brown and Jones at the end after Smith gets vaporized, all they think after that is self preservation.

Thanks for the upload! The quintessential Agent Smith. He's so perfect here that I spontaneously laugh when he sticks his finger up Morpheus' nose. :-D

Actually Smith never met another "One" before Neo, each time the "One" program reloads the matrix, all its components are updated: In factin Matrix reloaded there are 3 new agents Agent Jackson, Johnson and Thompson (note they are ending all 3 with "son"). In the first movies, Morpheus does not even know the name of Smith.Smith himself is another anomaly, just like neo menages to escape the rules of his world, this anomaly has been projected eventually by the oracle ( called by Smith "Mum")

Wholeheartedly agree. Greed is the virus that has infected our race--I think in large part owed to a fear and nonacceptance of death. Our curse is knowing that life is finite. Animals are blessed in that they are unable to understand their own impending demise. We are a selfish lot. The powers that be don't seem to really care about future generations. They want to enjoy what they have and if the world becomes toxic in the process, they don't concern themselves with it because they'll be gone.

notice how he refrains from the using the word illusion, in fact i think he only uses it in the 3rd movie with Neo.
