Oh wow! That is way cool! Hluru is making some really nice instruments. I have to say I've never seen a kalimba like that. So cool how they worked the acrylic and wood pieces together... and the mermaid pants are perfect for the ocean kalimba. :-)
Haha, thanks! I chose them for that reason 😅 and yes, I have been so impressed with what Hluru is putting out lately! They have some gorgeous tongue drums that haven't quite made it to the US market in large numbers that I am waiting to pounce on.
I have one of those... actually two. The 17 tine like yours and I couldn't resist the 21 tine one either. I'm becoming a fan of Hluru kalimbas. They sound amazing and, in this case, are so beautiful too. Congrats on your Deep Blue Ocean kalimba!

Thank you for this channel. I am a musician and producer and have been interested lately in small acoustical instruments I can utilize in my studio that are also great for my kids. It has been difficult to be able to find information on instruments like these. Kalimbas, ocarinas, etc. and you have reviewed tons of them and sourced them and it has made the acquisition process for me so much better - thank you so much for your content. Sub well earned!

I have a kalimba that was given to me as a gift. It was made from a hollowed gourd, and it came from a local artisan craft fair in West Virginia. I have to admit the tuning hammer threw me. I've only adjusted mine by moving the tines back and forth. Have you made a video on tuning a kalimba?

Does the resin affect the sound at all? I’m not very familiar with kalimbas, but I feel like it should have a smaller sound.
It doesn't to my ears! I think with flatboard kalimbas, the sound is mostly about the vibration of the tines and there is not much sympathetic vibration from the board, if that makes sense? lf there was, it would be mostly muffled by your hands when you are holding it.
