It stuns me that even now, only a few managers and players seem to really understand this concept.

I could be completely wrong here, but everytime i watch my team - Liverpool, I scream at the TV WATCH YOUR FUCKING MAN! stop ball watching, when they get counter attacked, the guy runs down the wing and it seems the centre backs are ball watching rather than keeping a hawk eye on the guy they should be picking up - the guy this winger is trying to pass it to!
Like fucking block that guys path, position yourself for him only, let the other defender worry about his man! cut off wingers view to your man, so if he passes there, its going to you first, then he has to think and change his pass, just position to tightly mark that guy near you and don't let him near the ball!
Sometimes they run back and are so pre-occupied watching what that ball running attacker is doing, they lose their man they should be picking up and he opens up space, giving that winger the passing option! It happens so much it drives you crazy!
Like defenders used to be so world class! WTF happened? Maldini was a great defender because he knew where to position himself and how to watch his man.
I think Cruyff is saying that, you need to watch a small space where YOUR guy is lurking, watch THAT guy closely and stay on him and assume he is going to be the passing option, your team mates can worry about picking up the other guys near them!
Usually theres an equal amount of defenders to attackers, 1 man each tightly marked and you cut off so much risk.
And when you are tightly marking your guy, that winger has to slow down the play and wait for the option to open up, during this time more team mates can get back to help.

There are pros and cons to every aspect of football, that's the beauty. Of course he is right, the concept is simple, but it's the implementation that is savagely hard. He has just said something akin to saying 'what is attacking? It is getting the ball in the net, that is all you need to do'. Ok but how?
Yes, try to defend small areas, but what if a player goes on a dangerous run? Do you follow him and stay goal side? Seems obvious that you should, but then that creates a large area you have just left, which can be exploited by someone else. It's a trade-off of man marking and zonal marking... man marking you are going to get pulled everywhere and exploited, zonal marking you are going to be static and unable to respond to the oppositions' movements and you're going to become outnumbered in areas with ease. It's an artform, even if the underlying concept is simple.

But that's the point. It is simple, but it's only a part of more complex strategy/style of play. It works as simple as that in total football. Worry about your role within a team. Pep does the same thing. Each player has a job and if they stick to their job and work well as a team via passing and moving within their spaces. It controls the game, and removes pressure on defenses and individual players that may have weaknesses. It builds pressure in the opposition and helps find cracks in their defenses.

I don't think u understood him at all. All of that is a word salad that has little meaning. Sounds like repeating some things u heard some pundits say, and most of them have no idea about football, despite how good they might have been at playing the game.

@@abody499 Haha, alright Guardiola, calm down. What a weird comment to add. My thoughts are all original thanks, and based on my experience, not the views of others. Do you have views and opinions you're willing to share, or are you just on here to criticise others, spread negativity and make yourself feel like the big man, because you can't in real life??

Haha, ik kon al geen beelden van een verdedigend Koeman vinden. Maar wat hij blijkbaar goed kon is inschatten waar hij moest staan.

What he is saying is that you must limit the spaces for the opposition, shifting from side to side but make sure you keep it compact there must be limited spaces between defence, midfield and attack that's why he is talking about meters the smaller the spaces the difficult it is for the opposition
