It feels like it wasn't until this year that the US started to put QR codes on all packaging and marketing materials, and yet I've seen this Japanese commercial as a kid during the dawn of UA-cam in 2006. So wild
From what I saw on TV these bar codes are used in Japan for all kinds of identification applications. The example they showed was someone buying a plane ticket online then that kind of bar code is sent to their phone as a picture message. When they get to the boarding gate they show that picture message to the attendent they scan the bar code and let them on the plane. Pretty cool!
Wow!!! I had learned something new this day!!! And it was a mystery from quite a time ago... Time to sleep 'till tomorrow!!! (in about 20 hours and 3 minutes)
That graphic is called "QR Code". It's like a barcode but stores tonnes of extra info. You can get software (usually free) for your cellphone that lets you take a photo of the QR Code. You can also find free softwares or sites to create QR Code. The camera ecords the picture and the software translates that to information. Alot of people have put thier resume in a QR Code graph and then posted it on thier site. I have my resume on the back of my business card.
Its called QR codes or quick response codes. I'm working in an ad agency so I'm pretty familiar with it. You just download an application from a provider then you could just point-and-shoot the QR codes with your photo enabled cellphones.
I never knew what those squares were for, and now, watching a commercial in a language I don't understand, I know what they are for now. The internet is a wondrous place.
basically its a bar code where you can take a photo of it on your phone and once you do it would automatically take you to the companies website on your phone. Its pretty cool if you think about it.
how can you not understand the advertisement. Its advertising the phone brand,DOCOMO. (Japanese brand) In Japan, all phones can take pictures of those code-looks pictures. Once you take a picture of it, it reveals a hidden message behind it.
the guy in the CM said "if you just take pix of it, u can go to regarding website (automatically)". He did not say it'll decode it into coupon. From whatever website u get, then u can get all the info u need that's including discount coupon.... that's what I understood from this CM
It's a cellphone commercial, Japan's pretty high tech.. They think the little image is one of those visual puzzles.. But it's actually a coupon that your cellphone can read if it's a DoCoMo Cellphone.. You just take a picture of the image with your cellphone, and it will decode it into a coupon..
its called a QR Code. its made so that most japanese-made cellphones can read it. if you have a cellphone with internet acess you can just take a picture of a QR code and it will take you to a website. most likely, the code on that poster leads to the official site for that movie
I have a friend in Japan who is teaching me. But I am going to have to take lessons if I want to learn how to read Hirigana and Kanji. You can pick up a lot of Japanese just by watching shows from that country.
Michael is absolutely correct. Although anime may seem like it's helping you, most of the time the characters use different/outdated/deliberately funny dialects, so it's not even great for pronunciation practice. If you're serious about Japanese and want to learn useful words and pronunciation, watch Japanese news stations. You won't just learn casual throwaway dialog.
Like I have a bulletin board of codes with peoples #'s encoded into the codes with thier names over them and I scan it to dial them. The dialing feature is novelty though cinsidering most phones have voice dial. It's mainly a method of achieving pervasive computing...
Just think of it as bar codes. Used to have fun with those in campus, you kind of can generate those square thing too. Use a compatible cellphone to take a picture of it and it decodes the square.
yeah i remember looking at the video back when i had just got a 1 mega pixel phone lol years ago but the reason that they get things like that first is due to the fact that it is easier to deploy technology over a area just larger then California vs the whole USA and it used to be hard to get american to pick on new tech put with apple and Google have really help bring us to the for front ... i mean my grandma has a i pad and a evo phone and shes like 80 lol !!
Could someone explain to me what's the fascination with bar codes in Japan? The Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+ website has something about it's bar car but as I cannot read Japanese I have no clue what the big deal is...
If you wanna learn badly like I do download Biki, im using it to learn simple Japanese at the moment so I can understand somewhat of what they are saying :) it is actually really good aswell too, you should try it.
the girls were talking about whether there was any pattern in the 2d matrix code. the boy said to the girl she could access the site simply by taking a photo of it with the phone. she said she knew about such a thing. the girls could not say anything more.
These are QR codes. They can store text, URLs, sms texts and a lot more. If you want to learn more about QR codes you can google for QRME. Its a uk site.
i watched a report about this in german tv. that's a funny thing^^ you can also get books and songs on your handy with this... but only in japan ;____; i hope this will come to germany soon >~
Dude, if you use it as an aid instead of the foundation, then there is nothing wrong with it and it depends on the anime you are watching. A lot of anime is very realistic regarding everyday dialogue as well as movies from Japan. AS I said before, it helps with the pronounciation.
ou icic, interesting. me n my sis was looking at these codes in Kera,v r so blur, wondering wat code is it,v thought it's for wallpaper or something. thanks for telling.
they were trying to get the code by eye (probably they want the promotional offer of this 50th anniversary sale thing)without knowing that it should be pictured by a mobile with a software associated in converting QR codes into readable pages
LOL! yeah... I droped my DS about 2 months ago and I happen to be in India and plan on staying here for about a year before I go back... so, that's not going to happen.... I miss my DS. Have you ever heard of the game called "Electroplankton"? That game rocks!
English Subs: G2: Hey, how's it? Can you see something? G3: Not yet...should I get closer or not? G1: I'm not sure... G3: Humm!! G2: Did you see anything? G3: well, I think I'm getting... B1: Hey, Do you know this? G4: What do I know? B1: You just can shoot it to jump to websites. G4: Of course I do!
QR codes became so much more popular after this time.
We can be happy that his awesome technology is part of our world.
Japan had these way before us, we finally have the capability to do this on our smart phones
15 years ago and Japan was already using cellphones to scan QR codes via the camera!
Yeah, they are so technologically advance, it seems.
That's the most interesting JP commercial ads I have ever seen in UA-cam!!
Thanks for sharing this video,
Mr shibuya01!

I just love their reactions at the end; priceless. XD
Wow!!!

When you scan the QR in the ad, a message in Japanese appears. It says: "This is a barcode for advertising. No access is possible".
aww man thats so awesome we need that in the US. Japan always have cool stuff.
QR Codes are the best! I just brought a Japanese phone with it. saves space
@KruegerLot every phone has this. this ad is from when it just came out.
It's like watching anime in real life! Love their reactions.
I am planing a visit to Japan in the next 3 years. I love that country.
Yeah I was shocked. I didn't know such technology was open for the public. Pretty cool :D
it's the 2d-barcode
a message is actually hidden in the pattern, and the specific DoCoMo phone function unlocks the message within.
yeah, this is so cool. i saw a video explaining japanese cell phone technology and it was pretty cool. i wish i could go to japan...

That's really cool. It'd be neat if it was used in the US. Could you imagine the gorilla marketing that could take place?
how can you not understand the advertisement.
Its advertising the phone brand,DOCOMO. (Japanese brand)

@SkyTenshi888 It isn't everywhere, in books and magazines mostly :P
i neer new that there is a such thing like that thats awsome
its not hard to find a QR code reader. you can go online and download one for your phone (as long as its a cameraphone)
this technology only recently came to where i live. it's not in most western countries yet as far as i know.
thats because here in the US any new technologies are first used by the military, THEN by the civilian sector.
an advanced barcode with an internet link, phones in japan mostly use mobile email instead of SMS text and everything's connected to the internet
Wow, that's cool! Thanks!
explains so much to me!!
i Love Japan..
I want to go there if i get a chance..
this bar code is just arrive in italy and u can download a programm on cellphone to use it..^^
oh that is AWESOME.

Ah! Now I finally understand what those things are for!
I miss Japan!
WOW! Oh my gosh! That was funny! I'm not even Japanese and I know what to do with those bar codes! Haha! This was hilarious!
Like I have a bulletin board of codes with peoples #'s encoded into the codes with thier names over them and I scan it to dial them. The dialing feature is novelty though cinsidering most phones have voice dial. It's mainly a method of achieving pervasive computing...

That was actually kind of a cool commercial.
note that QR codes don't just link to URL's
also to text, images, files, etc
so THAT'S what it is... I've been seeing those like everywhere
haha, yeah you can scan them with a Japanese phone to get extras like ringtones, wallpapers, and discounts and things.
awesome! gotta get me one of those!
@Karinrin88
does it work by every cellphone? o.o
I'm using this kind of phone too. They are using codes that can direct you from the brand's website
Could someone explain to me what's the fascination with bar codes in Japan? The Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+ website has something about it's bar car but as I cannot read Japanese I have no clue what the big deal is...
You can use them in other countries?
what are they trying to do at the beggining??
Your my hero LOL, Geez I cant stop laughing
thats so amazing
from what year is this commercial?
If you wanna learn badly like I do download Biki, im using it to learn simple Japanese at the moment so I can understand somewhat of what they are saying :) it is actually really good aswell too, you should try it.
So are they like bar codes going from 16-bit to 32-bit or something like that kind of upgrade?
So funny!! I like it!!
OHHH, so that's what those are for! I was wondering why those "barcodes" were everywhere!
That scanning finger print thing was a fucking easter joke.... Lol
I recently found out what QR code is, it is 2010 . This video was posted in 2006 !
lol i agree but u gotta admit, they made a hell of a good job advertising Japan
what are they?
the girls were talking about whether there was any pattern in the 2d matrix code. the boy said to the girl she could access the site simply by taking a photo of it with the phone. she said she knew about such a thing. the girls could not say anything more.
Iv never seen is that, in the USA?
WOAH.
that is so cool!!
do we have that here???
What about the others?
Hmm where do you get that information i cant find statistics on personal debt for countries as a whole.
It's a Japanese thing. Think of it as hardware links. Those 2d-barcodes are so very common because everyone has internet on his cellphone over there.
What IS that little pattern they're photographing anyway? Just curious!
Oooohhhh... so thats what those are for! i got a magazine from Narita Airport and had those square boxes. high tech-
@Cruzzzzz1988
i think it's 2006?

I've always wonderd what those codes were
woah, a phone with a decoder feature thing?
Neat beyond reason. I know I couldn't use it here but it'd be great to have. I wonder if they'll let me bring one back to the sates, eh? Lol.
the girl in blue is 'sakurako' in hana yori dango....the rich girl who's obsessed with domyouji
i love japan
lol, i like how japan had this 5 years ago
Dude, if you use it as an aid instead of the foundation, then there is nothing wrong with it and it depends on the anime you are watching. A lot of anime is very realistic regarding everyday dialogue as well as movies from Japan. AS I said before, it helps with the pronounciation.
how do you learn from shows?
just listening?
ive tried..
not too easy!
XD
You know that Japanese are well ahead of everyone else, technologically speaking xD
ou icic, interesting. me n my sis was looking at these codes in Kera,v r so blur, wondering wat code is it,v thought it's for wallpaper or something. thanks for telling.
Now that's one normal Japanese commercial lol
they were trying to get the code by eye (probably they want the promotional offer of this 50th anniversary sale thing)without knowing that it should be pictured by a mobile with a software associated in converting QR codes into readable pages
Yes they do.
LOL! yeah... I droped my DS about 2 months ago and I happen to be in India and plan on staying here for about a year before I go back... so, that's not going to happen.... I miss my DS. Have you ever heard of the game called "Electroplankton"? That game rocks!
