1st sounds much more upfront and whatever reverb and delays are there aren't covering the front of the vocal. The 2nd sounds more back and muddy due to the reverb and delays
The first one is extremely clean, while the second one has that saturated aggressive lowmid sound. For a general mix the second one is trash, but it might have a purpose depending on the vibe of the tune.
2nd vocal I hear lots of box and mud and reverbs need side-chaining and bring highs down a bit and get rid of some harshness and you good. I still like the sound of 2nd cause it’s more gritty so it can be used on lots of gritty hip hop tracks or even rap punk all depending on how you want the feel of track to go just cut some box.
This is kind of a shitty attitude. The other engineer was probably just a tracking engineer, their job is to get the artist on the mic and get takes, they aren’t trying to mix the song.
You can hear the other one all gained up and weirdly saturated and it lacks propper compression. Plus no headroom. The first one got air and pjnch in the low mids and bright enough to feel in your face even in a mobile phone speaker.
First one will translate across many speakers. The second one. Even though I like the character you can hear the difference and won’t translate well across all speakers because of the mid range mud and lack of clarity.
yeah jaycens has more clarity but the 2nd had more charactar. Seems like one those cases where they both could be used, throw that 2nd one after the chorus or 1st verse and gives that energy rising feeling
I can appreciate his talent and skills but Jaycen is raising an entire generation of unjustifiably pretentious engineers, all bragging about their (often crappy) mixes, having no idea how easy they have it with hip hop and r'n'b. Those guys couldn't put together a decent rock mix to save their lives, let alone a metal mix, by far the toughest style to mix. Mainstream radio stuff is insanely easy to work on in comparison. They also act like Jaycen invented using saturation and harmonics in mixing, that's hilarious.

i think they’re both great mixes. jaycen’s mix has way more clarity, but the original mix has energy and character. different styles.

@@bboymac84 that's a lot of words to say nothing
