won't the hose clamps rust over time?

I think they're stainless so it's not a big concern. I have dug out old sprinkler lines that were installed 20 years ago and they're a little rusty and brown but still solid and tight.

Are these plastic ridged fittings easily sourced via Home Depot or Lowe’s? Can’t say I have ever seen them around the plumbing isles.

Good question - they are in the "sprinkler" section! My local Home Depot and Lowe's both keep the lawn sprinkler parts separate from the regular plumbing stuff.

what is the size of coupling? 1/2"?

I *think* so, but I honestly don't remember. You'll want to get a coupling that fits your sprinkler pipes, obviously. There are a few different sizes and pipe sizes that are pretty standard.
