Just a heads up to everyone, just because the barrel this blue does not mean it’s 100% food grade. When I was working in a chemical blending facility we only used blue plastic drums, and typically got them secondhand from a food facility. They were cleaned and filled with our product. Please use caution when sourcing these and if you must use one that you’re not sure of, clean it out really well.

Im always greatfull that we have a relativly even rain distribution over the year.weve had one drought summer, just the one, but i installed a bucket under my sink to catch dish rinse water and a hose to siphon out water from our bath and I got a few ibc tanks as well. Since then weve had the coolest rainiest weather i can remember lol! Were on well water here, but its a shallow well. You never know what the weather will do!
for the last 5 yrs we have had little rain and this yr little snow! Gramma threw the dish water out to the garden, stopped pests as well. I h.ave the black berkeys as well. I now have several ibc totes for the animals and last yr even they couldn't keep up
I have a filter for my well that i can detach if i need to filter pond water or something. but there are also lots of natural springs nearby i drink from, unfiltered, cause my filter also takes the minerals out. I definitlly need water for the garden, rabbits and chickens and clothes wash and its handy having that gravity fed. Using the hand pump to wash clothes and all the chores can get exhausting in a short time.
I'd love to do that here even for part of my water. The city has turned billing over to suez.

You can also use an air compressor to clean those berkey filters while they are still wet.

haha freezing rain water - I could not drain and store all the water out of the 100 gal tank this fall... I looked into a pond pump, to keep the water moving but people did not recommend that; so I bought a heating blanket and wrapped the tank that is almost 2/3 full , card board around most of that and then a plastic cover against the rain and snow. I wish we could move it "under cover", but that would involve major revamping (leave it up to me; already restrung my wash line in the basement today, predrilling for the hooks and all) . Underground tanks, that rocks!!!!
Yes, it would have been too big of a project to do if we did not already have a backhoe. That was interesting too Patrick working that back hoe around our back yard. I believe he did that just before we put in the large garden section in the middle of the back yard after taking out the swimming pool so it was quite some time ago

@@TheAAnne123 yes I'll tell you the first thing is go by the filters from Berkey filters run about a hundred probably a little more now get your hair to 5 gallon food grade buckets I'm one of the lids I caught sections out so there's only three tabs that go down actually to hold it on the bucket so it's easy to pull off . Thinset that laid on top of your bucket set the other bucket on top of it then use the right size drill does the same diameter as the tubes are on the bottom.of the filter I recommend two filters so drill one on one side and one on the other side. Pull the bucket and the lid off inline the holes up so the filter go through the bucket and the top at the bottom of the bucket tight together the bucket on top you put water in and it filters it by gravity into the other bucket there are a lot of videos on how to make your own homemade Berkey filter be blessed and they work well you can go down and buy a spigot for the bottom bucket if you want I set mine up on the counter in the trailer because we were living in a trailer park on city water you can save the filters is clean them on the outside there's ways to doing that and they are videos on that too I do not make videos

Great video on an important subject. Here in the desert of Las Vegas NV things seem to be changing. Higher humidity levels bring more cloudy days and the potential for more rain. But the desert is an important eco system necessary for the rest of the US. So, I am purchasing food grade buckets & barrels for water storage. We do have water restrictions here and should it get worse I want to be sure to have water for my garden which will produce food for me and my household. Also for my next batch of chickens too. I live in a neighborhood which doesn't allow livestock so I don't have to worry about water for them. I like the stacking buckets with filters in place. Makes so much sense to me.

Not enough people taking advantage of unground climate stability. I remember as a young woman going through the out skirts of Niagara Falls area and seeing a few underground homes. At the time I was sad for those people because times were hard, but they actually have temps that do not go below 40 F in the coldest of times. It’s a great set up as long as flooding isn’t an issue. For large scale water storage it’s perfect. Our property had an old cistern when we bought it, but the county made us fill it in for safety concerns. That was nearly 30 yrs ago. I regret that, but console myself with the fact that it is cement and that is not the best water storage. We have a deep well and a pond now and we have two distillers. One electric and one stove top that can also be used on a wood stove, open fire, etc. the electric one also has an activated charcoal filter.

. I do collect rain water for use in the garden - should I be filtering that somehow? At the end of the season I store them inside a shed so they don’t freeze and crack. There is always a nasty layer at the bottom.

I have that same water filter set up and my friend at church made it and I got one for my daughter too, so we can start filtering even though we have a well, ya just never know.. but I would like to get the Berkley eventually if they are ever in stock

You can put a 1/2 teaspoon or so of colloidal silver in the water in the jug to keep algae from growing too
Yes, you can but I do not do that because I use the water for fermenting and silver can also prevent a good ferment
people seriously underestimate how much water they use!!!!! I switched over to ibc totes outside but use my blue barrels in the basement for back up water for the animals since it freezes hard and long in the winter in northern WI. I also bring in snow every day in 5 gallon buckets to melt in the shower (sweating buckets make a mess) for the animals . NO collected water goes into the toilet! find a back up toilet when you get to that point.
Yep. I think some people think the two 55 gallon barrels are all we have but those are most for collecting water, not so much for actual storage. That is what the underground tanks and jugs are for

He can do that but I cannot promise how soon. Most of the videos that have been going up lately of his are ones that he shot this past summer. He has been able to shoot others here and there but it has been limited due to being very busy making goods for the store. helping out family and me as well so I can keep up on orders and my own videos.
Thanks. Our water is expensive. So we are installing rain barrels which will hook to our down spout. I bought 2so far but I am thinking to buy 2more. Mostly for watering my gardens. I am hoping if I mount them high enough I can use gravity and a hose on my spigots. Maybe use a slow soaker hose in some places , where we are going to plant black berries and black currents. So looking for advice I do not want to bring electricity into it .???
Gravity on the blue barrels we have works well, one of the reasons we have ours installed that high. As I said in the video. we often use the water from those barrels to water plants in the greenhouse but also some outside. That requires no electricity, we only need that when pumping water up from the tanks we have underground

It is a good idea to, maybe once a year if you are able but we do not get it done every year.

I've been drinking unfiltered rain water coming off my metal roof for years without any ill effects.
That is good, I am not a fan of bird poop in my water though and one time accidentally fill a jar from the unfiltered water and very quickly after deinking that water I was vomitting up everything. So....I will stick to the filtered water

I can't afford more than home depot buckets. The orange ones. Let's see how "food grade" I can get. Social security runs out we're screwed.
You can get good grade buckets from grocery store/bakeries many times. I get them from our Walmart bakery for $1 each with lids! Can't hurt to ask around.
My husband wants to know how you were able to attach the spiggets to the blue barrels. Did you have to climb inside? How were you able to do that?
Gosh, I will have to ask Patrick, I do not think he climbed inside but I really do not remember, it has been quite awhile ago
We don't have a rain barrel or collection system, so at least for the time being, we need a form of water purification tablets or liquids.
We do have a gravity filter system. Is that enough in case the water is questionable?
If not, are there a couple brands of water purification tablets you could recommend?
I don't like plastic jugs for obvious reasons but I only have ONE glass gallon jug. Maybe I need to start drinking wine?

I really know very little about purification tablets and what is in them so I cannot recommend anything as far as that goes but I do know one can use iodine to putridity the water but you would have to look up how much is needed per gallon as I have no idea
Thanks for the tips and insights. :) Have you heard of AlexaPure water filtration system? It filters more than the Burke. Something to keep in mind if you have to filter tap water for some reason. Alex Jones sells them I believe.
I stopped watching Alex Jones a good number of years ago and only recently heard of AlexaPure from followers on the video I recently did on fluoride. I am very happy with our set up, it has been working for us for a number of years.

I am preparing some property I bought last fall and this is the big issue I've been working on first before I go up there next spring. South Texas to the Ozarks. My biggest worry is the cold winters and how I could possibly insulate the outdoor collectors. Have you tried anything like that? It's cold up there all winter and I worry about them cracking from the frozen water. I don't have any glass containers for storage currently but will certainly be trying to find some. @@RainCountryHomestead I heard you talk about underground tanks but not sure that would work for me as the ground is really rocky and I don't have any heavy equipment 😒. I've been looking for insulating wrap for at least the tanks I will have up by the house (I have plenty of room for as many as I want) and there will be more around the garden that I can empty and store in the winter. Somehow it will work out and the 1st year I will fill the house in every nook and cranny with jugs even if I have to sleep on them til I find a long term solution! LOL Thanks for your video, it's encouraging.

In regards to your 2 white buckets, are you sure they're not food grade? Our Home Depot sells the regular orange buckets for $3.99 and white "food grade" buckets for $5.99. When I compared them, I noticed that they are both made by the same manufacturer and both have the number 2 inside a triangle of arrows and are both marked HDPE. Other that their color, these buckets are exactly the same. I've since been checking other retailers and sure enough, all of their buckets appear to be food grade as well.
No, we are not certain, it was just one of those things we were not thinking of when we got the buckets and on one video where I was showing the set up someone came in and "screamed" at us about our "non food grade" buckets and acted all high and mighty about it. I am sure everything they have and use is perfect though...haha
I think the dye used to color buckets is one of the things that makes the buckets non-food grade which is why all plastic food-grade containers are white.
@@ChristopherJones16 Though a seemingly valid concern, that's actually something I had checked into previously and it's not true.
The buckets with food grade markings, numbered between 1 and 7, have to be food safe regardless of color. Think of things like white milk jugs, brown syrup bottles, blue water totes, yellow mustard bottles, etc. The colors of these plastics are numerous and all - apparently, if we can trust our government - safe.
Regardless, we always place our food into mylar or vacuum bags before storing it in the buckets. We simply always buy food grade buckets in case they are needed down the road for water or other food related direct contact use.
How many gallons a day do you need for drinking water? DId I miss that? When you said a month supply I wondered how many gallons that is. I also wondered do you seal the jugs any special way or are they just corked. We have wooden wine barrel for collecting rain water and I have an Alexa Pure for our drinking water but so far we have just used our rain water for the garden because it smells like sulfur when it comes out of that barrel
I did mention how much we use per day in the video but the standard per person when considering for yourself is 1 gallon per day. Yes, I just use the silicone stoppers as shown in the video. I do nothing special.
Hi sweet lady, great video! I would really love to install a filtering system here, but I just can't seem to picture in my head what you are describing with the 2 five gallon buckets. Do you have a detailed, how to video on the buckets?
Not other than what I showed in this video. Not really sure how else to explain it. Filter goes in the top bucket that has a hole drilled in the bottom (they come with a fly nut and rubber washer so it screws in place and does not leak). Then you need to drill another hole in the lid of the bottom bucket for the filter to drip down into. Also will need to install a spigot at the bottom of the bottom bucket to get the water out

I have a 3ft tall crawl space under my house do you think I could store extra water there in my glass jugs? And how long do you think it could last under there?
Since spaces like that are usually cool and dark, it should store just fine for a long time but I cannot tell you exactly how long
I just wondered how you guys processed your rain water to use as potable water. Does anyone make a filter that is as good as a Berkey but a lot less expensive? I just use a coffee filter and boil it and store it in 2 liter plastic soda bottles that I rinse out and save for that. I know I had seen some other filters that were supposed to be as good but were less expensive but I do not recall what the name of them was. Looking around, there seems to be several that all are supposed to be comparable so I picked one and was reading about it but did not see a micron rating, which I find odd, that should be the first thing listed on its attributes
So further research, it appears all those cheaper filters are made in China....yeah, not going to trust those

4:00 Did you install any valve to prevent the first flush water from mixing with the next collected water?
The water that goes from first flush into the second tank (automatically) comes off the top so it will be cleaner as most of the dirt will settle to the bottom of the tank. However, this means the water from the second tank, though much cleaner, still needs to be filtered. We can empty either tank manually if we need to clean them out and there is a valve that will direct the roof water out into the yard for instances such as Patrick cleaning out the gutters or other such
What kind of tops or corks are you using on those glass jugs? Sorry if you already answered that question in the comments
I use silicone stoppers. I believe they are a size 6 for the one gallon jugs. I like them better than the flimsy metal caps that come with the jugs and they are quicker to use
Do the big tanks have an overflow or do they not get completely full?
If you mean the tanks underground, yes, I had forgotten to mention that. If they get too full, there is a pipe that runs up above the ground and out

When you say "cheaper", I have no idea what you mean as there are many types of filters out there. Some filter out more than others so it depends on what you are using it for. If you are wanting to filter out fluoride for example, most filters won't get it out, even just the standard Berkey filter won't, it requires another special filter just for that.
Silly question, but I got four barrels and my Aussie husband, who refuses to be told anything and doesn't understand four season living, set them up practically on the ground (two sets of two on either side of a shed with metal roof), only one has a spigot which is about 5 inches from the ground, and all have large openings in the top because he had to cut half the tops off to get inside to cut the spigot and hose holes and seal them or whatever he was doing. How on earth do you close up the tops again after having to cut them to work inside the barrels? Yours don't look like you've cut them at all on top, but yet you have spigots and had to get your arm inside somehow. Where can I get the simplest explanation of a water barrel system? I can't really see what goes into the barrels at the tops and how they are connected. Now I am impressed that hubby did this with memory issues and chronic fatigue, but he's also stubborn as a mule and even after watching great UA-cams and an article I sent him with schematics (I didn't understand any of it) he just did whatever he wanted to do. And now we have pond water and no way to take the barrels off and clean them. I have a willing husband but he refuses to follow or have a plan. You're a lucky lady in that regard. Kudos to Mr. Rain!
Do you have a show on garlic infused honey? And instead of burping the jar daily if you can use an air lock? Is the pressure needed or is a vacuum a better environment. I am confused on this type of fermentation.

Where are you storing it? It should not be molding. Not even the filtered rain water I keep in jugs that has no chlorine at all goes bad and though I rotate through them, I have jugs I keep tucked away in other places I forget about and I may think of them years later to find they are still as good as when I stored them away. Keeping them in a dark location will prevent algae growth

Couple questions. Dont we need to boil the water to kill bacteria? I dont think filters can filter microscopic bacteria and liquid toxins although I do believe there may be an expensive filter that can filter fluoride. Still, I was told water collected from outside should be filtered and then boiled before consuming. Also how deep did you bury the big 1000 gal drums that they dont freeze? So do you have it set up so the first flush tank overflows into a second tank and then of course you said the second tank overflows into the two buried tanks. I have a first flush pvc pipe which collects the majority of the grime off the roof, it then overflows into my first flush 55gal barrel.. this barrel also gets pretty dirty but not as bad as the first flush pipe where all the heavier stuff is collected.. my first flush barrel then overflows into a second 55 gal barrel which is connected to a third 55gal barrel at the bottom.. the water in these barrels is very clear. So my setup is similar to yours except your two barrels that are connected to each other are buried under ground and a LOT bigger than mine! I want those bigger containers! I was going to use one to bury in the ground for a aquaponics system with fish and use the water to feed my garden.. heard this is absolutely the best water for gardens and will grow monster plants. not to mention I read people selling the fish (Tilapia is what everyone uses) to the local restaurants because eventually they have too many fish in there and are too large taking up too much space.

Yes, filters like the kind I use CAN filter out microscopic bacteria but fluoride is smaller than that even and that is why you need an expensive filter for that or you use an RO set up. My husband was in water treatment for many years. We have been using this set up for quite a number of years now.

Yes, i believe it does as it also will remove fluoride which is very small and most filters can't take it out. However, it would be the same with distilled water. I think people worry about this too much since there are other ways to get minerals through foods including seeds such as poppy, chia, flax or eating lots of dark leafy greens, and so on

It breaks my heart that you have to keep asking people to not judge and to not lecture you. Why are we humans so judgmental with each other? I think you have an amazing system. Wish I had a great guy in my life who could set up stuff like that. I know. Figure it out for myself. Sigh. Not my strong suit, lol.
That is the price at being so public and having a large audience. Though most of my followers are good and kind people that would never say an ill word, there are always those that want to come and glean the information that they find valuable at no cost to them but instead of at least saying thank you for the things they appreciate, they choose to belittle me for what we have or do that they disagree with

O, I have been tempted to do the same in the past and have in a few places but then quickly realized how it came across and stopped doing that and saved such responses for when they were actually asked for. Even with that though, some people just have no idea how to be polite but want to bash you because you do not do things their way yet we are all going to have ways that are best for us, does not necessarily make it right for everyone else.
