Julen Lopetegui has dragged Wolverhampton Wanderers off the bottom of the table since his arrival. The ex-Real Madrid and Spain manager has injected life into the midlands club, but could even more be done?
The squad is packed with talented players like Matheus Cunha and Pablo Sarabia, and while their performances have improved slightly - should the project they are building be yielding even better results now they have an elite manager at the helm?
Tim Spiers joins us to take a deep dive into Wolves, and how they could push even higher up the Premier League table.

Always enjoy Tim's articles in The Athletic. It's nice to find out he's actually a real person.
Wolves would been 11th or 12th had they won their recent home games against Bournemouth and Leeds, so they aren’t far off… But then again, talented players or not, if you can’t get points in games like that, I do worry about the team staying up sometimes. Thanks for the video! Wolves fan in Japan
Liverpool would be in the top 4 if they won most of their games. What's your point?
@@thisisblonded his point is he is worried with his team form, i dont know why you get triggered
this means nothing, palace arent safe and are in 12th right now. when the point difference between the bottom pack is so small, your current position is pretty much meaningless. west ham literally jumped from 19th to 14th when they scored one goal the other day
Having lived in wolverhampton it's very weird seeing foreign fans of the club, the state of the city makes it far less than desirable to live in😆
Are Japanese or from England living in Japan? Only foreign teams in Japan people support are cos of Japanese players
I think Tim might’ve glossed over a key issue: Wolves have no attacking midfielders. When you watch, no one in midfield goes forward. Which is why our forwards have to receive the ball so deep. That’s the main issue imo
Exactly, he pretty much said the problem as well Moutinho at 10 yikes
@@jakobsmith4046 I would love to see Sarabia through the middle in 4-2-3-1. I'm no Adama fan but him on the right podence on the left.
I’d like to see JLo try out Cunha in the No. 10 role
@@jokelanddotcom yes in deed. The real problem I see is the strikers playing like midfielders which need to stop. Also too many slippages
@@WillJarman1 Sarabias a fraud. His first touch and dribbling in general are terrible. Hope he turns it around, but he is so clunky on the ball. Cunha as a 10 with a bruiser type foward up top to win the knockdowns is the way to go
People seem to forget that they got 7th for three consecutive seasons before getting no higher than 12th in the past two seasons.
I just know that JJ calls that a doughnut.
i remember this 😂
The doughnut of despair
Yeah, I always felt that wasn’t correct, it’s clearly a croissant of sadness, not a doughnut of despair
Lopetegui at Wolves isn't quite the head scratcher Ancelotti at Everton was.
But it's close.
Everton is a big club. They just have been stuck in hard times for a very long time.
They are a top 10 club though.... in Portugal. 😅
The national team cant take part in the league
what's with wovles and portugal, like what is everyone talking about
@@clayx39 It's the number one destination for Portuguese players looking to play in the EPL, including Portuguese coaches. They just funnel them through like it's Lisbon FC. Wolves is like the legal establishment used for "Player laundering" by the Portuguese FA mafia. 😂
@@clayx39 Wolves have a close relationship with Gestifute (Mendes) and can pick a lot from its stable. So they have a lot of Portuguese players. However, it’s been changing in recent windows so the team is going to look a lot different next season
@@will_from_pa Wolves didn't, Nuno did, but he made that the culture
FINALLY A WOLVES VIDEO!!!
they did finish in the top 10 in 3 of the last 4 seasons
Oh Tim, great to see you here. Miss you matey,. Your books still has pride and place.
The problem with Wolves squad is their attitude when things go against them. They have zero self discipline and resort to nasty challenges.
Then there are the amount of expected theatrics (xT) which is a metric they consistently overperform with.
The attitude is a certainty but the theatrics is about even with most other clubs. I mean look at Kane
Now I want to see some stats like diving, professional fouls, timewasting, etc. show up in these videos.
Man u performs well in that metric too, mostly Bruno Fernandes. Love his talent but my god man he spends at least 5 min per game crying on the ground cuz someone whispered in his direction
super video. great data analysis. thank you.
Could you do an analysis on Eric Gracia at leeds and how we've improved under him.
Javi Gracia
@@Antonio-hb8rd Who is he at Leeds?
Gracia? Thanks Gracias

Halfway through this video, I realised I'm a Chelsea fan and we've to play them at the weekend
Went well
Love me some Tim
League goals: Haaland 28 Wolves 23 Kane 22
Great but watching it after heavy defeat against Brighton tells different story, but definitely the squad have quality players make me ask why they didn't improve more, maybe there is no motivation for competing, maybe tactical ideas in the team isn't enough in the pl
I don't know, but they should score more
Was expecting a deeper analysis tbh, especially with Tim Spiers at the helm.
I can answer this as a Wolves fan. We couldn't score in a brothel, the most expensive signings haven't delivered and we should have sacked Lage at the end of last season.
It’s so painful. What’s worse was that Lage disbanded our best defence. Even though he was right to keep Kilman he shouldn’t have gotten rid of Saiss, Coady and Boly. He gets rid of 3 centre backs and signs just 1 to replace them who is probably not matured yet to play at a club like ours. I am also disappointed with some of our summer signings. I mean Guedes literally quit the club. I don’t blame him tbh though cuz we were a mess. What’s worse is that Lage said he would bring in many new players. Instead he blows 100mil on 3 players and 1 quit.
The bloke has gone to manage the Saudi National Team. He must be desperate
Yeah even when you were mega in defence goals were quite hard to come by.
Bruh
@@jayneswinnerton8812 Lets be real, love Coady and hes a legend but hes not good enough. Just look at Everton and how hes lost his place there. Boly was always injured and wanted to start every game. He also caused some problems refusing to suit up for matchdays when not starting so he had to go. The only mistake was letting Saiss go. Very underated player for us as he played all over the defense and offered a goal threat for set pieces that we lack now. Toti and Collins are both better than Boly and Coady now, so Bruno was 100% right letting them go since they would cause issues by not starting.
As for Bruno, I don't think he was as bad as Wolves fans make him out to be. The board completly failed him this preseaon and early season. With injuries and a small squad we legit only had 11 senior players for our opening match, 12 if you include Coady on the bench. Chem Campbell was our first sub of the season! With that squad there was nothing he could've done. Don't think we can fault him too much for his signings other than Guedes who just wasn't the type of player we needed. Collins will be good with time, and Sasa was very unlucky to get hurt in the first match. With a recognized striker like Sasa healthy and a healthy squad in general, Bruno would not have left us in last place and we'd be comfortably midtable at worst. People forget Bruno had us pushing for Europe with a healthy squad up until injuries caught up to the small squad.
@@OryxDropShotz Lage kinda did fail us this season. We were playing 3 centre-backs at the back and last season we had one of the best defences. Then he switched to 2 centre-backs and we completely failed. I mean JL has continued to use 2 at the back but he has improved it massively. What Lage didn’t do was change it
Feel like lots of teams in the Premier have to good a squad for where they are...
As a wolves fan if we even finish 11th I will be happy, and saying we aren't a top ten club is a bit harsh especially knowing the fact we haven't finished outside of the top 10 since we got promoted.
SPOILER - no attacking midfielders = few goals
Saiss getting injured was a big loss for them, and they spent a wedge on sasa kalajdzic who could've really improved them going forward but he has been really unlucky with fitness.
Saiss is not a Wolves player anymore
🥶🥶🥶🥶
Blud saiss isnt even our player anymore 💀💀. And Sasa had a freak injury in his first game
I see Sasa coming back and really making a difference under Lopetegui
Can you guys do a video on Xavi Alonso’s Bayer 04 Leverkusan?
because the league is now full of bigger and better run clubs
Im from wolves, i am so happy that we reached Europe recently. I believe in Julen
Nunos team was special but now we would struggle to win games in the championship.... 😢
I wonder how much that screen that they use costs
Very misleading video. The forward options for lage this season were all injured or returning from injury. Sasa got hurt immediately. Neto knee. Raul still dealing with his head injury and Costa didn't play for almost a year before signing. This lead to players like podence playing as a striker which is something he never did before that's why he the team top scorer. More explaining of circumstances and less of numbers would tell the whole story.
He played a hurt Sasa instead of letting him heal
@G B he got hurt immediately. What are you talking about?
I feel like the issue with wolves is that they have plenty of young and talented players but they just don't play well as a team sometimes
Maybe if we could score goals we might increase our league position.
Wolves Footb
There are several reasons why this may be the case, including:
1. Financial resources: Wolves may not have the same level of financial resources as other top clubs, which can impact their ability to sign top players and build a competitive squad.
2. Lack of consistent success: While Wolves have had some success in recent years, they have not consistently performed at the highest level over a sustained period. This can impact their reputation and standing in the football world.
3. Competition: There are many other top clubs around the world who are consistently successful and have a strong reputation. This can make it difficult for Wolves to break into the top 10.
4. League strength: Wolves currently play in the English Premier League, which is one of the strongest leagues in the world. While they have been competitive in the league in recent years, they have not yet been able to consistently challenge the top teams for the league title.
Overall, there are many factors that contribute to a club's standing in the football world, and while Wolves are a successful club, they may not yet be considered one of the top 10 clubs in the world.
i dont think he means in the world i think he means the prem mate
@@scottwwfc I think he copy pasted a chat gpt essay
Must be overdue a video about how Uni Emery has turned around Aston Villa (and how he's managed in continental Europe!)
Those passing metrics and maps remind me an awfully lot of the "horseshoe of death" that used to plague Arsenal a few years back.
As a Porto fan, the Lopetegui days there were quite painful at times. There would be some times of entertaining football and even good European nights, but *a lot* of plain lackluster passing, passing sideways and then crossing to not really anywhere, convinced the club to spend a ton of money in Spanish players who were good on the ball, but still they were abismal to watch.
Afterwards he got the Spain job (how?), they were an ok side, then the RM job (how??) and it was nothing more than mediocre. Then Sevilla had a couple of good seasons and then it collapsed.
I honestly just don't get why he lands so many top level jobs, he just seems an average coach with quite a bit of tactical knowledge. A lot of "philosophy" but apart from the Europa league with Sevilla (impressive, yes), I don't really see any results.
Porto was early in his career, Spain he didn’t lose a single match in like 23 games and at Real Madrid they didn’t give him any time and at Sevilla he got them consecutive top 4 finishes and won them the europa league where they outplayed teams like inter and united. His final season at Sevilla was bad but it is still bad after he has left I’m sure if he stayed he would have turned it around. Doesn’t help that Sevilla sold their best players and replaced them with mediocre ones. People forget we were bottom of the league before he joined, he’s a class manager imo
They dont score
They beat Chelsea yesterday, we are at #11 so that makes Wolves a top 10 club 😭😂
We can't score goals Tim. Pointless having all those attacking options and not one reliable goalscorer between them. This squad has potential for sure but it lacks goals and the amount of money we've wasted is staggeringly poor.
Newcastle United aren't top spenders though. It will definitely be case this summer onwards when they start surpassing the rest. But Leeds, Villa, West Ham and Forest have spent similar amounts of money.
Do you think fashion can bloom on the pitch ?
interesting
I don't think tifo have done a Luis Enrique vid b4
Tifo needs a spell check. "Nottingham Forrest"
Yh spent so much NW got financial fair play on there backs so shi has messed up badly
They have a recruitment strategy of "if they are a Mendes client sign them, if not they don't exist"
Two of our 11 first team signings this year were Mendes clients but okay
24/25 season "why aren't West ham a top ten club yet"
Because the Prem is hard ✌️
Wolves for the past seasons are dreadful in front of goals. Ever since they sold Jota and Jimenez suffered a fractured skull most of their forward players are struggling for goals. The only reason they aren't even one of the worst teams in the Premier League is because their defense ain't that bad. Had Jose Sa not have playing well in most matches then Wolves would be in the bottom 3 under Lage. Lopetequi is not known to play attacking football. He did Sevilla multiple top 4 finishes in La Liga due to having a solid defense but most cases they have struggled for goals. Wolves will survive under Lopetequi but he will never solve their attacking problems despite having multiple attacking players like Neto, Jimenez, Costa, Hwang, Podence and Sasa.
Tim the legend please replace Steve we miss you
If only english speakers knew how much they trigger the portuguese when they butcher the pronunciation of "Guedes"... Please take 10 seconds of your time and listen to it on google translator. We also make a bit of effort when speaking your languange. Thanks.
Regarding the topic: Wolverhampton is basically a club for Jorge Mendes to launder his money. No wonder they don't perform according to the money they spend. Matheus Nunes is a great example of this, where he stated publicly he wanted to continue at Sporting for at least another season until a big European club made an offer, but Jorge Mendes forced the transfer to Wolves to serve his own interest.
Bro do not even start, the average Portuguese player/manager absolutely butchers the English language in most interviews 😂 we’re English we don’t care, relax and enjoy the good weather 🍺
@@wurkin89 seems a bit unfair to me comparing the pronunciation of a single foreign word/name to speaking an entire foreign language completely

Nice video Tim, maybe try speaking a little slower, had a hard time listening
It’s not the way Wolves are playing that’s keeping them out of the bottom three, it the way the team’s below are playing ? The manager hasn’t got a clue what team to pick .
Probably due to them not being in the top 10 places in the Premier league....
Wolves could be in 1st if they just win more games than the other 19 teams
I honestly think their kit is too ugly ever to be successful.
I like that leopard fur orange.

Nuno wasn’t sacked he just left
they werent even that good last year, jose sa just had a freakishly good season that saw him stopping the chances they were conceding.
We were fighting for europe till we slipped ip what are you on about?
@@marcorojas-vazquez6792 it was a completely false position, you were scoring next to no goals, and you were conceding as many chances as anyone in the lower mid table. the goalkeeper putting out 10/10 performances every week was all that was stopping you from leaving most games with 0 points.
