It's best to start exposing the roots slowly, maybe a few inches at the time. I wonder how you are goin to do that with a PVC pipe like that. Also, after wiring you had a much wider base at the top then at the bottom, this will create an inverse taper. Remember that in this style the roots will actually be your trunk so we want the base to be the widest.

Once it fills out the pvc it will be wider , many people use pvc and perlite . He can spoon out some I guess over time , it’s easier with thin plastic and just cut away , but definitely isn’t wrong in the technique. Looks like it’s gonna be nice tree .
