Hi Caroline. Yes home from our travels now. We had a wonderful time in Asia, and I’m glad to say the boys were well behaved in Spain too 😅. Wasn’t too sure what to expect with 4 17 year old lads! 💕😘 xxx
These cats are full of character and I think they would be perfect for a birthday card for any cat-lover. I can think of several friends of mine that would like some so I may get cracking on those. I love the whimsy type designs so I think I will enjoy this week's challenge very much. Many thanks.
Your cats are really gorgeous. I love the stripes, the polka dot bow tie, the moon and the stars and the black and white edge finishes this sweet little piece off beautifully. Well done Nina!
I have been in a creative slump for what feels like forever! This video of yours just appeared on my playlist and I am so glad. I love your whimsical style and you have your own style, nothing wrong with that. I went to school for watercolor and studied some heavy old school techniques that I found inhibiting to what I wanted to do. I was taught to never use frisket (masking liquid) to only use the white of my paper. Pfafff! I use frisket and love your tip about cotton swabs, I use trashy cheap craft brushes but even with a good artist soap I can never get the frisket removed. Thank you for the inspiration and useful information about the masking fluid, which I love to use .
@@NinaRibenaMixedMedia You are quite welcome! Flattery does not come easily for me, it I say it, I mean it! I loved watching your video and look forward to watching more. My husband recently purchase me a new beautiful sketchbook, typical of me I would have been opafraid of ruining it and it would have gone up on a shelf. I made myself do a memory sketch of a place we had gone that day, it was o.k. When I watched your video I got the sketbook out and made my own version of your doodles(no copying, as an artist that burns me up!). Keep being your unique self, have a blessed day. Linda (vangogo). 😊🤗🖌🖍🎨🖼
Thanks Ellie. Its gut instinct isn’t it. We know when a piece is lacking something, but the hardest thing is deciding what to add. I’m glad you enjoyed seeing it come together 💕
This is so cute Nina ,,, I have loved this months Prompts using water colouring paints,,, I do hope you do some more!!! Again I struggled with the rooster 🐓, I have seen so many gorgeous roosters on your Facebook page and they are all brilliant, I did do one but didn’t finish it lol,,, then I did another one , but this one was a cheat as I found one in my colouring books , and used water colouring paints, ,,,,. But I’ll try again,,,, loved your cats 🐈 xxxxxx 🐈🐈💕💕
OMG I just LOVE these 😍 I’ve just recently retired and am looking for things to do. I’ve just bought a cheap watercolour tin from The Works and I am definitely going to try these cats. 👍
The cats look cute, fun and easy to do. Hopefully I will have a bit more time to play this week as I only have the grandchildren on Wednesday, although they love painting and creating too. Might get them to have a try along with me! X
Your charming whimsical painting inspired me to paint a pair of kitties just before bed. I made mine purple and orange and included a little blue mouse, moon and stars.
Cute kitties . It's been great to see what others have come up with using this medium. Amazing . Thank you Nina for these prompts as they've encouraged me to try something I'd never have tried .
Good morning nina, your cats are so cute, well done, felt the joy you had painting them. Your watercolour-adventures were inspiring and if I have to choose my favorite..flowers-cats-flowers-cats, .....the cats. Have a good week, love lena
Good morning Lena, I’ve had fun with my watercolours this month and have learned so many cool techniques. Its pushed me right outside of my comfort zone, but I will definitely be sharing more projects using watercolour in the future. Hope you have a wonderful week too 💕😘🥰😻 xxxx
Great progress, Nina, I'm sure you are starting to feel much more 'in control' now. The utter chaos terrified me when I started watercolours, but once you start learning control, letting go of everything else & letting watercolour do its thing becomes easier. FYI Julie Hyde, an English watercolourist, demonstrates a few free tutorials on her YT channel Arty Julie (the rest is mostly on Patreon sadly), but these few freebies are great for showing you how to control your bead (it should be a bead of paint rather than a pool). Great learning material that I'm sure you will enjoy. Have fun!
Thanks Joanne, I am. I was terrified of watercolours before this series, hence they’ve been tucked away, but this has helped take the fear away and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using them. I’ve just watched Julie’s ballerina video and loved it. Will definitely be giving a ballerina a try, so thanks for recommending her channel 💕
Nina your cats are awesome, great choice of colours and so cute. I've loved every one of your watercolours, each perfect in its own right. This has been a great month and one which I hope you will do again. Tfs xo
I’m so glad you enjoyed this month Elizabeth. I would love to repeat this again. My watercolours would still be on my shelf gathering dust, which would have been a shame as I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using them 💕💕💕 xox
Oh my goodness!!! So beyond darling. You made me so nervous as you added and added extra details....but all turned out so very well!! You are so talented!! From a new subscriber Debbie and Dexter-Dog her rescued tiny chihuahua companion in sunny California. 👩🐾🌈😁👍
I have really enjoyed watching you do your whimsical cats, Nina! Your cats are precious! :-) This whole month of doing watercolors has been a wonderful experience for me. Nina, I am so glad that you chose watercolors for August. It has definitely challenged me to do more with them. It has been a great learning process along the way and I thank you so much for that, Nina. You are awesome!
Really enjoyed watching this. I’m new to watercolour and seeing your techniques and using different mediums really inspires me! Thank you. I’ll be doing this one too.
This painting is ADORABLE! I absolutely love it! I'm planning to give it a try because my granddaughter loves cats and I want to paint something for her! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this with us! So, so cute!
Thanks for the tip about masking fluid. It is on my wishlist, so it helps to know what to do in the future. Your stroke tips were appreciated, too! These are two FUN CATS. TFS. I did!
Someone recommended the Pebeo Drawing Gum which apparently washes out easily with soap and water, so if you are planning on buying some, this might be a better brand to go for. As always, thanks for sharing, its much appreciated 💕💕💕
I have followed you for some time with your fabulous alcohol inks so this was a surprise ... but had no idea until right at the end of this video that you were trying watercolours for the first time - FANTASTIC! Loved your splodgy birds and these whimsical cats are so sweet! Tomorrow I must find the travel set of watercolours I gave up on 20 years ago after trying much too hard & of course failing to produce anything remotely grown-up - taking this doodling approach has to be the answer as a starting point. Thank you so much for this :)
The doodling approach is definitely a good way to get started. Its just so much fun. These cats are so simple to do and I hope you find your watercolours and give it a try. Enjoy 💕
Oh Nina I love your cats and loved watching you use the watercolours in all the prompts. My favourite are the flowers too but I love them all even the rooster 🐓. Tfs. Xx
Try one stroke painting. Load a dry brush with acrylic paint. Use a dry brush with water colors. Dry each layer determine what part of the feather is lightest. Start pale, slowly as color. Try tiny lines in the end. Or use fine line pens to add the detail in the plumes. Practice getting the feel of feathers by cutting a feather from print paper. Cut the slits down each side so you can see the shadows. Painting is using lights and darks to get the feeling of the object desired. Practice a lot on scratch paper ( lower grade water color/ craft paper) before making the whole bird. I saw a study in flower painting that magnified a portion of a legal before drawing the whole flower. Try this with your bird. Remember tail feathers will have a different yet same texture than those near the neck and breast. (Ask Lindsey w. for ideas.)
Thanks so much for your encouragement Charlotte, it means a lot to me. I will definitely have another go at painting a rooster as I’m not one to give up and I really do want to achieve the same kind of look as the painting I was using as reference. I will watch a few videos on painting feathers I think and practice those first until I get the hang of it. You’ve given me some great ideas to try too. I’ve learned a lot this month and watercolour is something I will definitely be using more in my projects 💕💕💕🐓
What an inspiration you are! Look how far you have come in a few weeks! It's been a great journey. These cats are super cute. I really love them but my favourite was the flowers. I have a special fondness for the rooster too. Well done and thanks for sharing 💗
These kitties are adorable. The closeup pictures really show the details well. Cats are great subjects for whimsy. Thanks for sharing watercolor experiences. -Marsha from Texas
Oh I love these cats. So cute. I'm just getting into watercolour paint and am loving how versatile it is, but so unpredictable, so am grateful for watching your video and the great tips x
I think they're really cute, but if I had them I would have given them some funky tails. You can add such personality with a tail! Thank you for sharing your talents with us!
I love whimsical anything and you do it beautifully. I’m trying watercolor but struggling to make it not look like a child painted it. I used to do acrylic and they were very nice pictures but for some reason watercolor seems to be much harder but you make it look easy. Love your stuff!

Hello ,
Very cute the two Cat‘s and your work. Have a great Time for you .And friendly wishes from me .🍀A new good Year 2024. .
