Triumph has been one of my favorite bands for over 40 years now. Thanks for the nice history video. After all of this time, "Allied Forces," "Never Surrender," and "Thunder Seven" are the three that I still listen to a lot. Some great songs on the others, but those three albums from 1981-1984 for me are just the best - wonderful albums top to bottom.
The band also reunited for a lovely song on Riks album RESolution 9 called The Grand Parade. Other guests on the album include Alex Lifeson and James LaBrie from Dream Theater
I am as big a Triumph fan as you will ever find. I was introduced to this band in early 1983 right after they released Never Surrender. Edge of Excess came out in 1992 and one of the songs was featured in a horror movie at that time.
Well Ray...you've found that huge Triumph fan that you believe you are! Triumph was my favorite band in the 80's, and they still are almost 40 years later! I've met the band on several occasions. This band will NEVER get the respect they truly deserve! Triumph rules!
Rik Emmett actually was a practicing Christian! I thought it was especially apparent with the lyric, "The Good Book says it's better to give than to receive/I do my best to do my part," from "Fight The Good Fight." As a non-religious agnostic gay man of Jewish descent, I actually do like the uplifting lyrics, which is pretty rare for Metal, especially as it was in 1981. 🙂
Love Triumph!! They were my first concert when I was 14 in 1978. Amazing show! One I will never forget. They played of course their first record and songs off Rock n Roll Machine. 😎🤘🙌❤️
Favorite Triumph Album was "Never Surrender". I think almost every song on it was played on the radio. Lots of instruments on that album. Also lesser known by some, the song "All The Way" was played alot on Texas FM radio
Absolutely love Triumph, one of my all-time bands saw them at the Liverpool Empire on the "Just a game" tour. Fantastic show.I just love Canadian bands Rush and Saga also amazing 👍👍👍
They broke through thanks to Uncle Joe on 99.5 KISS, a San Antonio rock station. This was when DJs could play what they wanted. He played them so much that they were able to headline a show there. Triumph even get a key to the city. Great band.
YES!! Thank you!! Can't wait for the April Wine retrospective!! That's gonna be a long one, too, as they've had at least 20 studio albums in their long and winding career.
Fantastic retrospective. The first Triumph album I purchased was ALLIED FORCES and that was after seeing an add for it on television. I will have to check out the ones prior to ALLIED FORCES as they sort of lost me after THUNDER SEVEN.
I love Edge of Excess. Great album, take a listen to it. I have it on CD. I think many people were mad that Rik had left the band (and grunge´s popularity), so they overlooked this gem. It has killer tunes: Child of the City, Troublemaker, Edge of Excess, It´s Over (great ballad), Ridin High Again...
They toured with Saxon? I could’ve sworn I saw them on that tour with Saga. All these years later I am getting my concert memories jumbled up. Rick Emmet was f’ing awesome though, that much I do remember.
I was not aware that Surveillance was a low seller, however the album itself is excellent in my opinion. Lots of great rocking songs with that positive vive that characterized the band. Also check out my own Triumph artist spotlight video: ua-cam.com/video/F_Zyo5EYeBg/v-deo.html
My first concert ever was Triumph on their Just a Game tour....1st seat, 3rd row - right in front of Rik who was simply awesome! My fave albums from them in order Just a Game, self titled first album and then Allied Forces - all 3 are simply fantastic, solid from start to finish! The rest of their catalogue you nailed it - lots of excellent songs and Rik Emmitt instrumentals and then a bunch of throw away songs. But their best songs you could do battle against most anybody else. A VERY good and underrated band!
Edge of Excess is really a very good album. Troublemaker is a heavy heavy cut and theres a ton of great Moore-like riffs. Its worth it if you can find it.... Did you forget the "Live at the US Festival" disc?
Back in 1981 after I had gotten Allied Forces on vinyl, I then began the pursuit of finding all the other Triumph albums I could get and the original release of Rock & Roll Machine I got was different from what would eventually become available, at least in the area I grew up within. It was kinda an amalgamation of the first 2 LPs and had what I suppose was the U.S. release album cover. Track Listing: 1 - Takes Time, 2 - Bringing It On Home, 3 - Rocky Mountain Way, 4 - Street Fighter, 5 - Street Fighter(Reprise) 6 - 24 Hours A Day, 7 - Blinding Light Show, 8 - Rock & Roll Machine And then top that off, then I discovered in the 90s the what around the back swamps was deemed the 'Canadian' release of R&RM that was the same as the one you noted between cover art & tracks. And I only learned of that 'In the Beginning' long after it was not available in the area shops if it ever was, as I found the R&RM on CD back in the 90s when it was still very feasible to spend a day visiting various album shops and stores to hunt for new material and old material I had yet to find. Another Canadian band I similar trouble finding their earlier albums by was April Wine, and there have been other bands from various places as well. For instance, I had to go to West Germany in the 80s to get the Warlock albums due to the newly introduced regulations on imported art at that time that are now irrelevant to a point if they're still in place; fortunately I was stationed there in that era.
In my opinion, Thunder Seven is Triumph's best album top to bottom. The signature timepiece that starts off side two (on vinyl albums) is a masterpiece: "Time Goes By" - 6:02 "Midsummer's Daydream" (Rik Emmett) - 1:41 "Time Canon" - 1:31 "Killing Time" - 4:14 Add Spellbound and Follow Your Heart from side one, and it is hard for even Allied Forces, their only U.S. platinum album, to compete.
I grew up in the Toronto music scene and got to know every band . That was an amazing time. Two bands that came from the 80s area Killer Dwarfs and Harem Scarem are really good. Im sure you've heard of them. I know you play guitar and would very much enjoy the playing of Pete Lesperance. Try the album Mood Swings by Harem Scarem. I think you will be very impressed. Also Big Deal by Killer Dwarfs..
Edge of excess is one he'll of a good heavy album actually you may find it on UA-cam as some have posted it on here if you're interested in hearing it , the downside was Gil Moore did all the vocals and one song made it into a movie soundtrack called Troublemaker so if you can't locate it I can re post it on here but personally even though it didn't sell many copies (due to the album being released on Virgin label, it wasn't promoted very well in North america) it's one of the heavier ones in their library and worth a listen.
I love Triumph. I remember seeing them on the 1983 US festival (on tv). I didn’t know who they were at that point. Thunder 7 and Spellbound was my official entry point into Triumph. I started digging into the back catalogue and discovered some great great albums. I always preferred Riks playing over Alex Lifeson. Gil is a great drummer but no where near Neil. But I prefer their songs over all above Rush. Vocals are high but not shrilly. Thumbs way up on this episode.
GREAT RETROSPECTIVE ON TRIUMPH! I loved that band, and even followed Rik for some time, I have fallen off of the bandwagon for many years now. I am new to the channel. Have you ever done any instrumental lists? Not songs, but albums/CD's?
Sport of Kings was a record company album. Things got so bad that Triumph refused to work with the record company producer who was let go in the middle of recording. They told Rik to write a hit single at the last minute for radio exposure, and he came up with Somebody's Out There....by then, Triumph had run its course musically. A solid career that lived in the shadows of Rush, but as they all said in various interviews, Rush had long coat-tails that enabled them to break into the USA.
Thanks for taking me back! ALLIED FORCES was a great album . 2 big hits on the radio, Magic Power and Fight the Good Fight. Me and my friends got into them around 1981 from the Progressions of Power. They were a favorite band of mine back them. Went back and got Rock n Roll Machine and Just a Game. To this day, never heard Never Surrender. Never came across my radar, strangely. Will have to check that out. I seemed to move on to other things at this time - the LA Metal scene.Crue, Ratt, etc.
Unbelievable live !!!! The Jackson 5 borrowed pyrotechnics from triumph For their victory tour. And triumph is one band who never opened for another band
Not big in U. K at all really, but the local NWOBHM band did a 100 mph version of Rock 'n Roll machine circa' 81. Many moons later, via the tube, I discovered a very fine band indeed. Thanks as always for the post.
@@raymondkizer1216 Yeah, the occasional appearance in the Rock import section of stores seems to have been their lot over here, shame but there you go.
Might as well stay in Canada for awhile and cover Saga, Max Webster, April Wine and Mahogany Rush! All fine bands with various styles. What the heck I'll throw in Zon too, I bet that will stump some people right? Great channel look forward to future posts and as a new subscriber I'm catching up with the past right now. Thanks.
Great band, saw them twice, their live show had lasers, dry ice, the whole 9 yards. I think Progressions was a bit of a stumble with some lesser material on it and it was over with surveillance. Though it was pop I think Sport of Kings is 90 percent solid. Rik Emmit is one of the best guitarists that is always left off those lists. They played next to Priest and the Scorps at the US festival and were at their peak.
you forgot to mention that the last 2 tracks on stages are studio tracks. Mind Games and Empty inside.. Update, Edge of Excess is a good album. discovered it on apple music. sadly the album on cd is expsne to buy nowadays.
I saw that to living in Vancouver, flipping the channels,I'm from Toronto, Saw them in high school, I watching is that Mike,so keep watching and fellow Canadian Alex says good luck with your band in Canada,he now lives in Jamica, Gill runs Metal Works in Toronto,he bought the other 2 out.
Let’s rank these Triumph albums. 1) Allied Forces 2) In the beginning 3) Just a game 4) Rock and Roll Machine 5) Thunder 7 6) Sport of Kings 7) Surveillance 8) Progressions of Power ( Not enough sung by Rick Emmett brings it down) The one without Emmett is not even worth a mention.
My favorite Canadian band. Love their inspirational lyrics. Not really biblical perse, (though a verse is referenced), just uplifting words to keep the human spirit going. I have *Just A Game* on vinyl. It's actually "a game" on the inside of the cover. My best friend and I played it once, a lot of fun. My favorite album though is *Allied Forces.* *"Fight The Good Fight"* is my favorite all time track from them. I saw them during the *Sport Of Kings* Lp. Great concert...
Thank you for this! I miss Triumph.. Supposedly they are kinda back together again with Emmit. BTW.. Edge of Excess was quite a disappointment to say the least. Melora.
Triumph is not back together, although in recent years, the three members have rekindled their friendship and have received some major awards in Canada. They also played together on a track called The Grand Parade on Rik Emmett’s Res9 album, Resolution.
Pete, I really, REALLY enjoy your comprehensive discographies for all of these bands. However, I find that you are not as critical as I would like. At this point in time, if the band does not offer a comprehensive Box Set, then (based on your feedback), I am not certain what to purchase as someone wanting a couple of classic albums. When it comes to a band like Triumph, I would like to be informed of the classic albums as well as some to stand away from...you seem to be partial to all of the material, good and not-so-good. Cheers, Brent
Hey Brent- these History of Shows are meant to be just that, a history of the careers of the bands, not a critique on all their albums, though in some cases I do mention what some of my favorites are. If you are looking for a synopsis of what my favorite material/albums are from some of these bands, you'll want to watch my Top 10 Songs shows.
About Triumph, I still really love *Thunder Seven.* I think it stacks-up even to *Allied Forces* (which I would eventually get on vinyl). You have to remember that *Thunder Seven* was a concept album (Time, natch) and it was the only one that Triumph ever did. It took me 2 or 3 complete listens to really get into the whole thing - particularly Side 2 - but it was worth it in the end, to reveal the masterpieces that both "Killing Time" (also sung by both Moore & Emmett) and "Stranger In A Strange Land" were. Even *The Sport Of Kings* was really good; that is, for a commercial album that was definitely *not* Metal at all. Then, with *Surveillance,* the wheels began coming-off the track. The only 2 songs I know from it to this day are the first two: The Emmett-sung "Never Say Never" and the six-and-a-half minute Moore track (and aptly-named) "Headed For Nowhere." The ironic thing is that both songs are actually very good; they just weren't enough to stave-off the downside that was Triumph's career at that point. Still, as you said, Triumph was still a great rock band that released a string of 8 great albums in a row *(Just A Game* through *The Sport Of Kings,* in my opinion), and is my 3rd all-time favorite Canadian band after Rush and April Wine. 🙂
It's really funny about 1986: That was the year that Metal Went Pop. With the exception of the Thrash brigade (Mötörhead, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax, among others), every single major Metal band that put-out an album that year - Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Krokus, Triumph, Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, and most especially Dokken *(facepalm)* - did their most commercial albums by far that year. Priest and Maiden both experimented with guitar synthesizers, and although the results weren't *bad,* both albums represented a major come-down from their previous albums (especially JP). Van Halen acquitted themselves well, but Dokken's *Under Lock And Key* can barely be deemed Metal, as well as with the Crüe's *Theater Of Pain,* Krokus' *Change Of Address* and Triumph's *The Sport Of Kings.* However, every single one of those bands then came-back to form with their next albums in 1987 and '88. Isn't it interesting how that all worked? In retrospect, it was kinda bizarre, actually, but at least they all returned to Metal from their respective failed experiments. The only non-Thrash Metal bands that did not undergo that experience were Queensryche and Rush...although Rush did come-out with the absolute worst album cover of 1986 with *Power Windows.* 😆
Maiden in 86? They had just finished the World Slavery Tour and they put out ‘Somewhere in Time’, which was a disappointing album but I do not remember it having any synthesisers on? The album Iron Maiden had synthesisers on was ‘Seventh Son of a Seventh Son’ which they released in 1988 and not 1986. But it is definitely not pop! It’s also a really good album.
Pete, why don't you try playing some of the music in the background while your explaining the record. It would it would give those of us who haven't heard the records a little "taste" of what they're all about. Maybe you've already tried it. Just a thought. BTW, I enjoy your shows.
I have done it in the past. There's a few problems- 1) there are policies on playing copyrighted music 2) Can't play it too loud cause it drowns me out, and if it's too low nobody can hear it.
One of the most under rated band of all times!
ZEBRA were excellent too.
Love Triumph!
Pete, your channel had got me addicted. This is like RNR nerd heaven for me, brother. You rawk man! Thanks!
Just a Game is not only, maybe their best work, but it is one of the best rock albums i have ever heard..period.
Triumph could play it live and boy did they.
Triumph were effing brilliant and fantastic musicians with 2 great singers. They deserve a lot more love than they get.
They never had that one big hit to break them in America nor a defining sound that set them apart from other bands.
Allied forces that was a pretty big one for them when I was in high school
Triumph has been one of my favorite bands for over 40 years now. Thanks for the nice history video. After all of this time, "Allied Forces," "Never Surrender," and "Thunder Seven" are the three that I still listen to a lot. Triumph were known for having uplifting lyriics in many of their songs. They were almost like a non-Christian Christian band.
I think you mean a Christian non Christian Music rock band. Some of the same themes, but not overt like Petra and The Rez Band from that era.
Love Triumph!! They were my first concert when I was 14 in 1978. Amazing show! One I will never forget. They played of course their first record and songs off Rock n Roll Machine. 😎🤘🙌❤️
Great vid. Triumph is another one of those old bands that I missed somehow. Will do a marathon listen to this band.
Right on the money again! Fight the Good Fight is genius....
Wow! After all these years I hhad never paid any attention to Triumph... you've switched me on! some truly great guitar prog! Thanks!
Favorite Triumph Album was "Never Surrender". I think almost every song on it was played on the radio. Lots of instruments on that album.
Also lesser known by some, the song "All The Way" was played alot on Texas FM radio
Great show Pete! One of my top 20 bands - great positive songs!!
Cool!!!! When I played guitar Rik Emmett was one of my main influences along with Peter Frampton and Michael Schenker.
Why did you stop?
My favorite players and live performances that I've seen were Ritchie Blackmore, Michael schenker Gary moore rik emmit ronnie montrose, early evh ,
Absolutely love Triumph, one of my all-time bands saw them at the Liverpool Empire on the "Just a game" tour.
Great band.
Saw them at a free show during Just A Game. Gamma opened. Incredible. One of my all time favorites. Rik Emmett is such a great musician.
Gamma cool. Ronnie was great in that .
Super professional performers.
3-piece translates to the stage very well.
Awesome as always.
How about an April Wine retrospective
I will add to the list!
Since you are on a Canadian kick, why not the Premier Space Prog band FM?
I have all their albums, cool band .
YES!! Thank you!! Can't wait for the April Wine retrospective!! That's gonna be a long one, too, as they've had at least 20 studio albums in their long and winding career.
Sea of Tranquility survivor?
they played my high school in brampton. great
Thanks for sharing. I hadn't heard of this band before, but I think I'm going to try to pick up a compilation or one of your higher recommendations.
Great Band canadian... I Love Triumph 👉 Rick Emmett / Mike Levine And Gil Moore 👏👏👏
Rik.
in 1984 i buy Never Surrender............great albun
I just subscribed I love heavy-metal and classic rock I’m 54 years old and I still love my rock music LOL I’m from Long Island New York
Thanks for your review of Triumph.
Fantastic retrospective. The first Triumph album I purchased was ALLIED FORCES and that was after seeing an add for it on television. I will have to check out the ones prior to ALLIED FORCES as they sort of lost me after THUNDER SEVEN.
Awesome band!
My first concert was Triumph & Helix (had no idea who Helix was!) in May, 1985 @ Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Great show- fantastic band.
Another good one never surrender
I love Edge of Excess. Great album, take a listen to it. I have it on CD. I think many people were mad that Rik had left the band (and grunge´s popularity), so they overlooked this gem. It has killer tunes: Child of the City, Troublemaker, Edge of Excess, It´s Over (great ballad), Ridin High Again...
VERY good overlooked album that actually has many great, harder, edgier songs. DEFINITELY worth a listen.
Been a Triumph fan many years, mostly from hearing my older brother's tapes when they came out. Found all the LPs (and some 8-tracks) since.
Can we get an update on Aldo Nova-he was Canadian too.
They toured with Saxon? I could’ve sworn I saw them on that tour with Saga. All these years later I am getting my concert memories jumbled up. Rick Emmet was f’ing awesome though, that much I do remember.

First time I saw triumph was progression of power tour . Stood about eight feet in front of rik emmit.
This is a really really really good channel
Just played rock n roll machine LP the other day. Still kills.
I also saw them at Palladium with Saxon. Sounds like the same show you were at.
Follow your heart , that’s my favorite from the CD
Edge of Excess is really a very good album. Troublemaker is a heavy heavy cut and theres a ton of great Moore-like riffs. Its worth it if you can find it.... Did you forget the "Live at the US Festival" disc?
TRIUMPH on my list, still have the album .
I take that back this is a great channel
Copyright considerations, most likely.
Mike Levine, the bass player also handled keys for Triumph, not Gil Moore.
Back in 1981 after I had gotten Allied Forces on vinyl, I then began the pursuit of finding all the other Triumph albums I could get and the original release of Rock & Roll Machine I got was different from what would eventually become available, at least in the area I grew up within. "Time Goes By" - 6:02
"Midsummer's Daydream" (Rik Emmett) - 1:41
"Time Canon" - 1:31
"Killing Time" - 4:14
Add Spellbound and Follow Your Heart from side one, and it is hard for even Allied Forces, their only U.S. platinum album, to compete.
Allied forces, progression of power, rock n roll machine. their absolutely best.
Triumph's lyrics were very positive and inspirational. Killer live band, always brought it... Saxon and Priest killed it last night, what you think?
That they did!
Great video. You said that a lineup change occurred in the early '80s
Great stuff Pete... Queen would great review sometime. Thanks
Edge Of Excess is actually an extremely strong album. Much heavier than anything they'd done since Never Surrender.
I'm one of the few who actually likes it.
I agree. It's a pretty dang good album.
Triumph is one of my favorite bands . It's been bugging me for a while as to where " Sea of tranquility" came from . It's a Gordan Lightfoot tune :)
Greatest Canadian rock band ever in my opinion.
I agree!! I love Rush, but for me, I like Triumph more!
Triumph best Canadian band period
How about the live King Biscuit CD?
I grew up in the Toronto music scene and got to know every band . That was an amazing time. Two bands that came from the 80s area Killer Dwarfs and Harem Scarem are really good. Canada had a lot of interesting bands. April Wine, Max Webster, Saga etc. Most were worth checking out.
Remember seeing them play in my high school gym.
I love Triumph. I remember seeing them on the 1983 US festival (on tv). I didn’t know who they were at that point. Thunder 7 and Spellbound was my official entry point into Triumph. Rush was a drag compared to triumph
GREAT RETROSPECTIVE ON TRIUMPH! I loved that band, and even followed Rik for some time, I have fallen off of the bandwagon for many years now. I am new to the channel. Have you ever done any instrumental lists? Not songs, but albums/CD's?
They would get together again in 2016 on Rik Emmett's RES9 album for a track called Grand Parade. It was realeased on Mascot Records. .
Love Triumph. 2 good singers in this band, have always prefered Gil's voice over Rik's btw. Awesome musicans!
☺☺☺☺
Why not have the groups you talk about
Have their music playing in the background. ?
Hey Pete...what are your thoughts re Bon Jovi?
Sport of Kings was a record company album. Things got so bad that Triumph refused to work with the record company producer who was let go in the middle of recording. Check out Thunder Seven, too. That and Never Surrender are prime Triumph - really strong front to back!
I can’t believe you don’t own Edge of Excess!!! It’s an underrated album for sure.
You missed their best track on album #2....Little Texas Shaker....kick ass rock 'n roll
Please do my favorite band.....survivor
Does anyone remember Shooting Star?
Its sad that van died......Great Band
Yep . Influenced by Kansas if I remember
I don't see Ordinary Man as a bluesy track Pete, once it gets going, it's an all out rock track, and the lyrics are fantastic.
Do yourself a favor Pete. Listen to that edge of excess album. Heavy stuff. Phil is amazing. Some of gil Moore's best drumming.
You'll love the song trouble maker. It will kick your teeth in
Unbelievable live !!!! The Jackson 5 borrowed pyrotechnics from triumph For their victory tour. And triumph is one band who never opened for another band

Triumph never did well in any country across the pond. North America was it for them.
@@raymondkizer1216 Yeah, the occasional appearance in the Rock import section of stores seems to have been their lot over here, shame but there you go.
Unfortunately Triumpf was a well kept secret in Germany and continental Europe back in the day. They never played there.
Thanks.

Caught them in '86 in Buffalo , the same night The Mets beat The Red Sox in Gm. 6 of The World Series ...
How about an Aerosmith one? :)
Do a history of Max Webster!
you forgot to mention that the last 2 tracks on stages are studio tracks. Mind Games and Empty inside.. Update, Edge of Excess is a good album. discovered it on apple music. sadly the album on cd is expsne to buy nowadays.
What about Kings X?
Great Canadian Band, top of the Canadian pile is Frank Marino, the greatest guitarist ever
I've searched Sea of Tranquility and can't find any hits on Big Wreck. Why is that? Have you not listened to Big Wreck? If not you need to!
Saw the bass player on Wheel of Fortune...no..really...he was.
1) Allied Forces
2) In the beginning
3) Just a game
4) Rock and Roll Machine
5) Thunder 7
6) Sport of Kings
7) Surveillance
8) Progressions of Power ( Not enough sung by Rick Emmett brings it down)
The one without Emmett is not even worth a mention.

Do a history of the band Triumph rat
My favorite Canadian band. Love their inspirational lyrics. Not really biblical perse, (though a verse is referenced), just uplifting words to keep the human spirit going.
I have *Just A Game* on vinyl. It's actually "a game" on the inside of the cover. My best friend and I played it once, a lot of fun.
My favorite album though is *Allied Forces.* *"Fight The Good Fight"* is my favorite all time track from them.
I saw them during the *Sport Of Kings* Lp. Great concert...
Number 2 Canadian rock band behind Rush you say. Face palm.
Pete,
I really, REALLY enjoy your comprehensive discographies for all of these bands.
Cheers,
Brent
Hey Brent- these History of Shows are meant to be just that, a history of the careers of the bands, not a critique on all their albums, though in some cases I do mention what some of my favorites are. If you are looking for a synopsis of what my favorite material/albums are from some of these bands, you'll want to watch my Top 10 Songs shows.
I have the Edge of Excess album I think it's really better then the two that came before it
About Triumph, I still really love *Thunder Seven.* I think it stacks-up even to *Allied Forces* (which I would eventually get on vinyl).
Rush changed their sound in the nineties. Their heaviness was gone. Went with a progressive police sound. Absolutely a bore after that.
Nope.. Not Saxon's first appearance in North America.. Saw Saxon open for Rush in 1980.. "Wheels of Steel" tour..
I figured you had tried it but just thought I'd ask about it. Keep doing those shows. I'm learning about bands I never heard of .
That's the point! Keep watching, much more to come, and make sure you investigate all the older episodes when you can.
