Thank so you much. I agree, riving is sometimes the most difficult to master ...but it is so much fun to do. I enjoy the feeling of the knife working WITH the wood grain. I'm sure you know what I'm saying ...you've made plenty of birds yourself ...AND you're an excellent teacher. We appreciate you :-)
Fan-carving is the art of riving long-fibered wet wood and then turning and interlocking the blades to create a 3-dimensional design. Fan-Carving is an Old World folk art that needs to be preserved...
Sally, you make this look so easy....and it is, if you follow your process! I have made a number of fan birds since taking your and David's course at the Senior Center in Niagara Falls several years ago. I have used your techniques and tools with both white cedar (from your supply) and basswood. White cedar works the best. Thanks for making this available.
Hi Bob, we get our White Cedar from northern Michigan ...lower peninsula ...around the 45-degree Parallel line. An Amish man keeps a look out for us. We get logs and work from there.

Great Demo Sally. You do make it look easy. The Australian Carvers are doing well with what I've shown them so far. They'll love this clip.
Glad you did not let this form of art be lost. Such a beautiful piece.
Keep on carving them.......
