Wood for Fan Carving
This video shows the process of procuring wood blanks from a log and preparing them for Fan-Carving. A fresh tree 10 to 12-inches in diameter with straight-grain and long-fibers is necessary to make fan birds and other 3-dimensional creations. Tools used: chain saw, hatchet, screwdriver, mallet and knife or gouge.

Madam namaste I am from India( Maharashtra state) tell me the type of this wood. I want to learn the fan carving.
So amazing I have never seen this before thank you for this lesson
Gratulacje Sally. Pozdrowienia z zaśnieżonej Polski
Meus parabéns belo seu trabalho na arte de fazer passarinho.
Thanks a lot for this super video, love it
What a superb instructional video
Почему на инязе? Чушь какая!!
Do you use the whole round or just the outside?
Hi John, We only use the outside of the round ...AND the next portion, if it's acceptable. The further you go into the center of the round, the less the wood will offer a nice 'rive' or 'cleave' performance. The best performance is with tight annual growth rings and that is on the outside of the round. The heartwood (interior) portion of the round can be used for other types of carving, turning or landscape profiles or whatever your creativity can imagine. Nothing goes to waste. I hope this helps.
This is so beautiful and your instructions make it seem so simple. Thank you for sharing your technique with such a great video
Thank you for your kind comment. Actually, it IS quite simple. Not much of a learning curve ...rewarding results very soon. Have a go :-)
Wood type Hemant from India, nashik pune
Our wood of choice is White Cedar / American Arbor-Vitae (Thuja occidentalis) that is found in the northern regions of the U.S.A. In central Europe, fir and spruce are preferred. Pine and aspen are favored in Scandinavia. If you have wood in your region that is straight-grained and long-fibered …give it a try.
namaskar good morning very nice video and explanation 1 question is that tell me for birds fan carving which type of wood to buy from market.tell the name

Thanks Sally,,is this wood a Juniper wood .?.I only ask as white cedar is sometimes called juniper .
We hear so many regional names for white cedar. It is for that reason that we go by the botanical name of Thuga Occidentalis. A person can reference that name in a book, online or wherever they chose. In that way, they can sort out what it means to them in their area. Otherwise it can be very confusing. We learned this very soon, when we were traveling throughout USA and Europe teaching Fan-Carving.
What a neat technique!
Thank you for your comment. Yes, it is a neat technique and quite easy to master ...makes for an elegant finished product with meaningful legends and customs :-)
Hmmm... I finally followed Ann's advice and took Stodoys. It's great for beginners and has some advanced stuff too.
Beautiful art work, very pretty bird of peace. Thankyou for sharing your inspirational talent 😊 💖
Thank you for your most kind comment. It's so much fun to do along with meaningful legends and customs. It's really quite easy to learn the craft ...we're help to help if needed. :-)
It is very nice. It looks amazing but, I don't think it looks realistic, if that is actually the purpose intended. My main objection is the 'body' of the bird. It is too narrow. You could have started with a chubbier piece of wood, and just chiselled enough wood away from the feathers portion. It would have given you the opportunity to have a more realistic, and why not say "cute" part of the body, giving it a little more of a round form. Just my opinion. Not here to ruffle any feathers. See what I did there? "Ruffle"! No! Not here for that.
LOL ...no feathers ruffled here, Mario. And, you're right, it's not meant to be a realistic bird. It's a symbolic bird with legends and customs that date to the late 1500's that we've been able to track. We have done the style you suggest, but it's not fun ...and it takes away from the graceful bird hanging by a string and gentle turning in the air currents. There's a purpose for that. Thanks for your comment :-)

Wonderful. From Brazil.
Rain and thunderstorms
Thanks... That was a great demonstration.
Thank you so much :-)
Thank you. That was fascinating and informative.
Beautiful lady, beautiful creation. Love it!!!
Thank you, Arte ...glad you enjoyed :-)
Thank you :-)
Just visited your site, great video and instructions. I'm going to try and make your Bird, Thanks
Good for you ...and the best of luck. It's "FUN" :-)

Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I now feel like I could attempt to do a fan bird and due to your wonderful video I may even have a chance of actually making one that works! I love carving and though I am a novice I am keen to learn. Your work is beautiful and your instructions on fan carving are the best I have ever found.
Thank you so much for your kind comments, Steve. Being a wood novice is a benefit. You don't have to "retrain" some preconceived ideas ...especially with "riving." This may be the only type of carving that you have to "feel" the rive line (fiber) and let the knife go with it. It's FUN!!! Watch our Riving video to get that part down. AND we are here to help you should you need first hand advice. Good luck :-)
Thank you so much for your most kind note :-)
Вы большая умница!
спасибо ☺️
Very impressed. Thanks for all the details.
thank you so much ...glad you found it interesting :-)
Thank you for your note :-)
I think this is the most incredible thing I have ever seen, you are so gifted. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for your comment. Actually, Fan-Carving is quite simple to do. You "can" do this yourself! Once you learn the basics, all sorts of patterns will pop forth in your mind. It's a lot of fun ...we'll help get you started :-)
Hello again sally, so do you have to cut a fresh cedar tree in order to make/prepare a fan bird??.
Hi Jason, NO, you can use a fallen tree and reconstitute it by adding moisture. It would take some time ...maybe days ...weeks ...depending on the situation.
I know it is quite off topic but does anyone know of a good place to stream new tv shows online ?
@Jakob Tucker lately I have been using Flixzone. Just google for it =)
@Aydin Hudson definitely, I've been using FlixZone for years myself :D
@Aydin Hudson thanks, I signed up and it seems to work :) Appreciate it !!
Hi sally, before putting the cedar in the hot water, do you just put the rectangle block like that before dong anything to it??.
Hi Jason, We just shape the edges to make the final blank. If you'll watch our video on "Wood for Fan Carving" ...you'll see the complete wood preparation process ua-cam.com/video/_-mmb29Ytzs/v-deo.html
I really enjoyed your tutorial on making a fan bird Sally. I've never made one before but I am going to try it. Thank you for all the information. God Bless you and have a Blessed day. Mike Brady
Good for you ...happy that I was able to inspire :-)
Loved the story, thank you. Im going to a fan bird workshop soon and hope to learn the art, and now also to bring home a little protector :)
Amazing,,,,,
Thank you for this video. Lovely to see.
You're most welcome :-)
what is the dimension of the wood blank?
Hi Jerry, The dimensions are 5-inches long ...2-inches wide ...and 1/2-inch thick. Hope this helps :-)
Looks like fun. We have oddels of white cedar fence posts that date back to the 1940s. It’s just as white and soft as can be. I’m gonna give it a go, thanks.
Wow ...lucky you ...we're envious :-) And you're right, it IS fun. Have a Great time and let us know how you're doing :-)

Wooooow!!! is amazing!
Yes, it is amazing ...and it's also "FUN" :-)
muito bom.
Thank you :-)
I really enjoyed watching and learning from your video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
You're most welcome :-)
Love this project, one that I really am interested in carving...what is the hand knife you are using, as I would like to try that style. And I will finally order a draw knife like that one...I have another, but it is way to big for such small work:) am wondering how small a bird one can make doing this? It would look great on a native flute as the fipple part. THANK YOU for a great video...finally someone who knows how to TEACH it:) Cheers!
Hi Vicki, The hand knife I use is the Flexcut Pelican knife. All other tools are Stubai gouges ...except, of course, the Flexcut 3-inch Drawknife that we designed for Fan-Carving. The patterns can be down-sized to create whatever size is desired ...I've seen very small fan birds. Some people like to challenge themselves to see how small they can go :-) Thank you for the kudos ...makes our day :-)
Where do get the white cedar>
Hi Bob, we get our White Cedar from northern Michigan ...lower peninsula ...around the 45-degree Parallel line. An Amish man keeps a look out for us. We get logs and work from there.
wow! you are amazing ! thank you. i learned so much watching this video, i have experience problems I'm now just starting the wood carving art , and this video inspired me so much.
I'm happy I had a hand in your inspiration ...carry on with my best wishes for success :-)
hello i'm in Maine will northern white pine work well i have miles and miles of it around here.
Hello Don ...sorry for the late reply ...either UA-cam (or me) was not able to use the "reply" feature for a while. To answer your question ...YES ...white pine works quite well ...in fact that was a common timber here in Michigan ...the loggers used it for Fan-Carving :-)
Don
Hello great video do you use green or dried wood for this?
In the video I heard her say that she simmered the piece of wood in water on the stove for a couple hours before carving. I also heard her say something about the water coming out as she was cutting it. I didn't hear whether it was green wood or dried before she started though. I am guessing it can be green to do this.
I had the privilege of purchasing a fan bird many years ago at a deer and turkey expo. I was told it was made of one peice of wood. I have had it hanging in my house all that time . This is the first time Ive gotten to see how they are made. Thank youmfor the v1ideo. Great job. :-)
Glad we could provide some enlightenment and education to you life, Jim. Thank you for taking the time to comment. Enjoy your sweet little fan bird :-)
Thank you, Jim ...glad we were able to enlighten/educate you on this :-)
