"près de" is just anywhere "close to".
"à côté" is exactly "next to".
"Il se tenait près de la sortie"
"Il se tenait à côté de Julie, à sa droite."
In some contexts there will be no difference, but usually "à côté de" is more precise than "près de".

Prés de means close to and côte de means next to. So the difference is that your close to something or your next to something. Pls like if understand?
