  • Matthew 6:19-21 says, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth or rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Storing up treasures in heaven is a command of Jesus to His followers. It is our individual accountability which we cannot ask other people to do for us, but a decision we make for ourselves. But look very closely at the passage God doesn’t say that we are to have no bank account, insurance policy, etc. God says to sell what we have, give alms, provide ourselves bags which grow not old, a treasure in the heavens that fails not, where no thief approaches, neither moth corrupts.
Every earthly treasure we have is vulnerable to destruction. Every one of our treasures, except our relationship with God and His people, is temporary. Jesus urges us to invest in what is lasting, eternal, and ultimately perfect. Remember that when we lay up treasures in heaven, it might not make sense to those around us. But we do it because we trust Christ alone and anticipate the day when we see that everything we did for Him was all worth it.
