SUNBIRDS BUILT A NEST 🪺 IN MY BACKYARD - PART 01 OF 04 | 16/1993

A Purple-Rumped Sunbird pair built a nest on a Gooseberry tree (Amla) in my backyard. They had a clutch of 2 eggs which hatched a week ago. The baby chicks will to be strong enough to fly within 10 days. This video is Part-01 of 02, it introduces the parents and their journey through raising baby chicks. The idea of Part-02 is to record the first flight of the baby chicks. I'm currently recording footage of the young ones every morning and evening, please do stick around for the part-02.
It was the frequent bird sounds that were heard from my bedroom window that I realise the Sunbirds had built a nest. Initially, I was recording with the Tripod alone but had to start using a box when the female started spending more time in the nest.
The purple Rumped Sunbirds are endemic to Indian Subcontinent, they are only 10cm in size. They breed through the year and may have two broods, mainly during the monsoon. The Female usually builds the nest by herself while the male flies beside her. The nest is made up of plant fibres, cobwebs, bark pieces and fly seeds. The nest interior is lined with soft fibres. The eggs are usually laid in the morning, incubated both by male and female. The incubation period varies from 14 to 16 days. The chicks fledge in about 17 days and continue to be fed by the male for a few days. Females or possibly juveniles from a previous brood may sometimes assist the parents in feeding the young.
