Walk away and do something else, let your mind wander. With ADHD my problem is usually reigning in creativity to something outside the terrirtory of nonsense. Some of my favourite pastimes include looking at bubbles in/on soapy water and watching flames dance on candles/campfires/cookers. Chaos in action
Sometimes my M-F job leaves me burnt out on writing, which is also one of my hobbies. It can be draining, so I'll shift my attention to something different: reading art books, taking photos, cooking, and more. And sometimes that will ignite a spark: Why did Van Gogh paint this? How did Dr. Hindin feel when he made that? How could that meal change someone's life. Just paying attention to the world at large sometimes can be a spark.
I cut up 600 -800 grocery bags and crochet homeless mats with a strap and tie straps to carry around. I am into art. I love doing calligraphy but have expanded on that into art. I design my light switches with art. My son who is grown soaks wood in acid and then connects a battery to it and it creates the most awesome patterns. Having moved to Central Texas he sells his work like hotcakes. I am currently into oil painting as watercolors bore me. I don't overthink projects.
I know exactly how this feels. I love cooking and wondering the city when i feel like this. My work is engineering and prototyping new products and i love it but sometimes i feel stuck and the things above help me. When i was a kid my father who was a sculpturer used Chloroform to bong acryllic and he told me to keep distance when i was in the atellier and he worked with it :) so bonding acryllic left me with the impression of some mystical dangerous process:)

@@DavidHindin thank you, for responding:) creativity supply has it's ups and downs otherwise it wouldn't be exciting to make something new. Best wishes from a Bulgarian subscriber
As an artist, I’ve made some crappy things- and they became some of the most meaningful creations to me. Because like you, I felt the process (persevering through challenges to find a solution) became more important than the end product. When I’m blocked, I’ll go visit my friend’s daughter and we’ll break out the sidewalk chalk or paint. No pressure for perfection and we laugh like idiots! -Sharon
It's rare to find a physician who can tap into creativity and appears lively & multifaceted on the Internet... Thank you for sharing, you give me hope of a career in medicine and not sacrificing everything else I love in life (creativity/writing)
This is a great video. A simple premise of allowing yourself to have an idea and going through with it, immersing yourself in the process. It doesn't have to be huge, expensive, complicated, or perfect; Something new was tried and that's good. I like seeing a surgeon do something different with their hands, that was unexpected and I would be happy to watch more. Please be careful, are you even allowed to put your hands at such risk? lol It's better to see a surgeon get creative with crafts on youtube than to express their creativity in the operating room ...???? :D Actually, saying that, do you have any stories about creativity in the operating room? It's certainly not a place for creativity to run wild but I just know surgeons can be faced with the unimaginable which requires new thinking on-the-fly. (Also, find a square and use the square)
Thanks for the suggestion to share snippets about creativity in the operating room! It's definitely a big part of what we do, even though it's often in the small moments rather than the focus of an entire procedure. For instance - what to do when suture unexpectedly breaks as you're tying it, right at the end of a long closure? What to do when you need adequate tissue coverage but there's tension on the tissue you're using already? What to do when you're repairing the floor of a hernia defect but the contents keep billowing up during the repair? Lots of small moments when creative maneuvers or fixes are critical to moving forward in the procedure - even if they're not big, zany moments of creativity that others in the room would know about. And definitely yes to the square. I've got one and used it - just didn't include it in those shots 😂
It's simple - I find a problem in my life - any problem. I start sketching until I can come up with a solution I like. I then start methodizing how to do the work needed and when I've finished that part I find a realistic way to actualize the building part of the project.
It’s great that you have outlets for your creativity. I can’t imagine living without being creative. I spent my first 20 years after college as an artist, but after health issues affected my mobility and chronic pain made doing anything physically strenuous too difficult, I pivoted to my "side gig" and became a professional musician. I now work for an opera company, which feeds my need for creativity in some pretty interesting and challenging ways. I sleep for 11-14 hours per day, so being able to earn money as a creative person while working only about four to five hours per day has kept me sane. Anyway, I’m really happy to see this video from you. It’s a good reminder that we all need to try different things from time to time.
I really liked this video with your creative progress and with your insightful words. This one feels honest and genuine. Also next time you cut something so thin, please use a knife or blade instead of sad saw :D
I was an artist. I drew, painted, colored, wrote. Crafted. I got sick and got some brain damage and my creativity went out the window. It’s all still trapped in my brain, but I can’t get my hands to cooperate or even get my brain to want to do the creative things stuck in my head. But this was a nice little wake up call that I should try again. It won’t go perfectly, and like you said, sometimes it’s about the process. Also your office and film studio is obviously your dog’s office and film studio/bedroom lol.
Cameron, thank you so much for sharing this with me and the community here. I"m so sorry to hear about all that you've been through - but glad to hear this video might be the little nudge of encouragement you need to start creating things again! And yes - my office and film studio and everything else around here is basically just Gershwin's. It's his world, we're all just living in it 🐶😊
@@DavidHindin that’s how I am with my dog Maui. He definitely runs the show here. But we love them so that’s all that matters lol. And thank you so much. ❤️
This is such a cute idea I’m emo 😢 I definitely felt like I’m in a creative rut recently, and as much as I try to balance creativity with medical school, there are days where I just feel incredibly guilty for doing things outside of medicine. My hope is that I’ll be able to stay connected to my creative side and feel fulfilled in areas outside of medicine as I pursue surgical residency.
So happy you liked it, Isabel! Honestly med school is such a huge amount of work - it's tough just to get through everything let alone have time for creative passions. I can totally empathize! Hope you can let yourself enjoy those things every once in a while without feeling guilty :)
@@DavidHindin Certainly not but I was thrown back to a quote I read a long time ago *_"The power of fire has awed, inspired, and terrified man since time immemorial. The secrets of the flame have traditionally been carefully guarded by the valiant warriors and bold experimenters of history. The science of chemistry garners no greater fascination than with demonstrations of fire and explosions. All great scientists begin by experimenting with the power of the flame, harnessing its ferocity, and nurturing the spark of curiosity to learn more about science. To see the flash, to smell the smoke, to feel the heat is to become transformed. Ignorance is consumed, immolated by the sensations of the flame, to be replaced by a burning to learn more about how to wield and control this flame."_* Also, I am endlessly amused at the thought of a "Break in case of emergency" box having a firestarter kit. It needs a secondary box containing a little fire extinguisher, for those times when your creativity gets a little out of control. Take care :D
Thank you for this video, doc. Thank you for noting how it can feel when a person doesn't flex their creativity once in a while. It can feel a bit gray when it happens. Also, thank you for creating your acrylic box with match. It's enjoyable to see people being creating, doing what they do skillfully, from cooking to coding to crafts. :) Yes, sometimes it's about the process ... and now it's time for you to take on your next creative ideas!
