Have you ever considered what you'd put in your OWN survival kit? Here's what I came up with - for my own surgeon version. Let me know what you'd pack in yours in the comments below!
Special thanks to Aubrey from okayminis for the miniature Altoids tin! (www.esty.com/shop/okayminis)

when I was in the US army as a combat medic I would make these medic bags that were small, precise and visually organized, so anyone can pick it up and deploy it in any high pressure situation. Balancing surgical kits, iFAKs and chest rigs were like a game of "who's first" when assessing possible injuries for a mission.
Thanks for the nostalgic kick Doc.
Thank you very much for your service, Paul. And the medic bags YOU made sound like they were seriously the real deal!
Absolutley....I can see how they would be literally little life savers in the army. You guys are amazing!
I do this for my family for our bugout bags and hurrican emergency kits.
My Mother was a Marine Vietnam Veteran so I was around alot of combat medics and corpsman.
What would be in _your_ bugout bag, Paul Theara? Or Altoids tin?
Sorry, the doggy stole the show. I fell inmediately in love with him. Playful not so little furry guy!
He can’t help but be the center of attention ☺️🐶
Agreed adorable 🥰
Surgicel for the win 🏆👏 👏 👏 👏 And i know most people will say the puppy stole the show, but for me..... it was the googly eyes, all day. Much love ❤️
Hey Ashleigh! Thanks so much for watching this - and super glad you liked the google eyes too ☺️
You got a love your precious babies every time you’re in the middle of something they want quality time or playtime lol 🫶🏾
haha totally. Very demanding but also cute 🐶
Oh my gosh I love those ring lights, they make such a difference to my videos!
Your tin is so cool, I actually ordered a suture kit too! 🙈
Gershwin stole the show at the end! 🤣🙏
Love the content of your vids. I learn so much, thank you! 🤩
I'm so, so glad you liked it - thank you so much Amber!!
I'm a massive medical prepper and one of the best suture are something called zip stitches. Applies like a bandage but it's a suture. Obviously it's for minor wounds and temporary sutures while getting proper medical attention.
This kind of field kit thinking has me wondering about stories from Doctors Without Borders. I expect there would be some stories there for sure
Such a great idea - I bet they have all kinds of neat stories.
That looks like the tornequet that came in my first aid kit. Glad to know what it's for. Don't forget to add a striking surface for the matches. I know you don't want to need them but it's still better to have them.
Do you have a twin working for NASA and editing your content? 😂 I really enjoy the pace and brevity of your videos. This kit isn’t for me since my vasovagal syncope would kick in at the sight of blood. The iodine tablets are a good tip though! Your floofy pupperhead is a scene-stealer🐶❤
P.S. You have the handwriting of a surgeon or a serial killer. I’m glad it’s the former. 😳😆
Thank you so much Sharon - I’m so glad you liked it!! and I promise my handwriting is the former
Aaawww ! Gershwin is SO cute ❤️🐾
Your handwriting is just too good for a doctor.
This is more appreciated than you know! 😂
What about a pair of folding scissors if that's the part of the Swiss Army Knife you want?
Also, a few styles of scissors can be included in a bugout bag in general along with fire starters. Though wet -strike matches can be quicker.
In a bug-out bag, several methods of fire starters can be kept along with small candles and tinder. Maybe a dry stick, too.
I looked some folding scissors up, and they are too large for an Altoids tin.
I also looked up Swiss Army Knives and knockoffs, and they might fit even on the short side of the tin.
Also with one of these pocket knives there is a small blade as well; another way to cut, albeit not a delicate or fine tool.
You can now complete surgery on a bug! Good job!
You read my mind! ☺️
This is so cool!
Thank you so much!! 🤓
You have some useful tips for a survival kit.
Thanks so much Kara!
What would you include in YOUR survival tin! Let me know! 🤓
Loved the idea. I would also try and squeeze in a forceps if possible. 😊
@@drdarshanbm thank you! And yes, totally agree about the forceps - a mini Adson would be 👌👌👌
Honestly? BD Swabs, waterproof extra large Band-Aids, triple antibiotic, tweezers, a glasses screwdriver and a twisty wire, a fingernail file and a razor blade.
That's gonna cover splinters, cuts, burns, ripped fingernails, calluses pulling into the quick, glasses falling apart, and loosing the glasses screw.
Past that I'm probably doing more harm than good. I just want to prevent infection and stop things from getting worse for like a weekend.
Maybe some butterfly bandages.
@@someperson7 these all sound great!
Bourbon, a stick to bite on, and superglue.
Awesome vid!
Thanks so much Guarav!! Really glad you liked it.
Excelente, super práctico. Me encantó, muchas gracias-
Thank you so much, María!!
What a great video! Such a cool concept! I really appreciate your gentle demeanour - very different from what I think of when I think "surgeon". ...I'm sorry, I mean that in the nicest way, but I have known some weird scalpel jockeys in my day! And I came here from the "surgeon reacts [to Dr.G]" video, suggested to me after I watched a slew of his - loved that one too! - so my mind is still in "irreverent mode". And, of course... I like your dog. :)
I’m so grateful you found this video - thank you so much for your kind words! And I’ll share your compliments with Gershwin too 🐶:)
@@DavidHindin Cheers! o7
OMG you are my best friend!… I put goggly eyes on so many things!!! I mean everything is better with googly eyes!… ok maybe I am just abbynormal…lol
In all seriousness I actually do have a kit that I carry and it is a small tin with, what I think would be very helpful in a emergency!… although it’s decidedly not trauma related. Again loves ❤the whole video!…Thank you for your time.
Ps you should include a small straw is cut in half! you never know when a emergency tracheotomy may be necessary!!😊Just a thought…..
You are so kind. Thank you so so much. Would love to know what’s in your tin!
😊💜😊Thank you so very much!…
I think you are very kind too! I really love your videos! they are really great! I love to learn new thing!
Like even when you’re doing your reaction videos, I love how you stop and explain certain aspects of what is happening! what the equipment is and how it is actually used for etc. etc. which is awesome!!!
I really wish I had been smart enough to become a Doctor myself!!. But even though I did not get a doctoral, I did work in the medical field in a few different departments I.e. oncology lab, different aspects of forensics, gerontology, and hospice for a few years..
I really loved working in every one of them, and did so for about 20+ years.
I still miss it very much. sorry for all the info but the reason i gave you that info was to make my having like six different kits Make a bit more sense lol, just like me working in several different areas, I have a few different kits depending on what I am going to be doing and where, again if that makes any sense?
Either way make it more understandable that I have several different ones Like the one for hiking, camping and similar outings’s this isn’t a complete list just a quick summary I have waterproof matches, a small amount of steel wool, flint 4 portable alcohol wipes, which have dual purposes good for cleaning wounds also great to make a fire 🔥 when the kindling is damp, six assorted sizes of band-Aids, three small portable packets of antibiotic pain relieving cream, 2 2 x 4 gauze pads three small packets of iodine.m4-6 Tylenol 4-6 aspirin, oh And my tin kits. Are about the same width as yours but mine are longer so it can hold more.
honestly I can’t remember what else is in that one?.
As I tend to be overly prepare especially for hiking and/or camping, because well you just never know what could happen!.
Well I am very sorry for talking your ear!! Off…or rather giving you a bad case off eyes stain! lol
I really hope that you have a wonderful day/night again I am truly grateful that you took time to read my messages. It really genuinely means a lot!. Thank you again for taking the time to read my comments..
Ps I am very sorry for any typos or errors! I swear Auto correct has become my nemesis!!…. That And I have been up for about 53 hours and honestly typing this was a challenge. I probably missed plenty of mistakes again I hope it’s understandable. I hope Nothing sounds horribly wrong or weird!!.
Thank you again for your time. Keep up the amazing work.!,…
Thanks
What up Trauma bro! Nice video.
Thank you so much!
Would there be value in scaling up, say to the size of a pencil case (if those are made nowadays) or something still easily portable? Would having additional room change your decisions of what to include, or how much to include?
That is such a neat idea. Totally! Even a teenie bit more room would change the possibilities 🤔
How are you going to light the match without a striking pad?
These just need a rough surface, and they can be wet, waterlogged, etc and will still work. But be super careful - the flame is literally non-extinguishavle for its 20-second duration!
Can i just get the handy pocket surgeon version?
Is "give the victim plenty of fresh air" a functional step with a desired outcome? Or is that just fluff?
In my humble opinion the fresh air part at least is vintage fluff :)
This has lowkey Michael Reeves vibes
I’ll take that as a compliment!!
Where is the propofol and oxycontin??
Bichon?
Are you sure your a doctor? your handwriting is too legible.
The beauty of video editing - you don’t have to see how many takes it took me 😂
Excuse me a 170$ for a ring light on a standard lamp body similar product go for 60$. I'd love to hear the justification... Canvas their reviews are not that trustworthy either, yotpo is know for fake reviews... But I get it go get that money from your sponsor.
I only work with sponsors whose products I have personally tried and believe in. I can’t speak to the competitors on the market, but I can personally say the Canvas lamp is incredibly high-quality. And they are a company who clearly stand by their products. Thanks for watching!
