Total respect for Scotland, the pipes and the kilt. God help anyone who calls mine a skirt. Never forget, but dont hate. For hated will only harm the person doing the hating. Walk through life with a peaceful heart.
My ancestors fought for the Jacobite cause in the North of Ireland. I hope to one day see a United Ireland and an independent Scotland. Tiocfaidh ár lá mor chara. Eire agus Alba go brath!
I'm Scottish, I live in Scotland, I'm a highlander and 500 of my ancestors died in that battle for the bonnie Prince. I don't want an independent Scotland and over half my fellow country men feel the same. Without Scotland there would be no Britain or her empire. The crooked roasters and bawbags that run my country are destroying my culture and heritage and they're Scottish(or at least born here) not English. We're lucky that Westminster can overule some of their decisions.
My wife and I just returned to the states from Scotland, while there we went to Culloden Moor battlefield as we both have Jacobite ancestry that fought and died there. We did not see or hear the ghost, but we did most certainly feel them. We both placed a small stone upon the carin, we both wept. I did not need to take photos, I shall never forget the place.
Thanks very much for sharing your experience! I think being involved in History because of your ancestors makes the visit in Culloden even more emotional.
+Robert Riddle Aye Drumossie Muir has that effect . Cumberland up there on the rock - well now my Family town( Birr , Co.Offaly ) had Cumberland on a pillar till 1909 when he was encouraged to quit - just like Nelson watching his world collapse in Dublin 1987 !! Memories never get banished

I find that extremely ironic and here's why. The Jacobites fought for the hereditary line of king James to return to the throne. The same king James who hated protestants resulting in the pilgrims who sought the new world. Reminder King James essentially was the God king of the Jacobites and like James they shared a dislike of protestants. So for a man who fought for the memory of James and house Stuart to seek sanctuary in America.....IS VERY IRONIC.
My ancestor Alexander Grant fought with the Glengaries Regiment at Culloden and after the battle was one of 69 men Sold as slaves into Chattel Slavery by the English in the Rum Islands. ...Only 7 of the men ever returned back to Scotland. Remember
He must have been branded a traitor sense Clan Grant did not support the return of Stuart to the English throne. All things considered he's lucky. Most Jacobites weren't given any quarter.
Everytime I hear this haunting song, it sends chills down my spine. The flower of Scotland slaughtered by a Hanoverian supported government army. Many of the Scots were only kids aged as young as 14 and were bludgeoned to death with a rifle butt after the battle and shown no mercy. Why the Hell can't Scots believe in themselves and their amazing country like the Scots who fought and died on Culloden Moor did?
Hi I understand where you're coming from. There's a lot of lowland Scots in the red coats. They practiced in the city of Aberdeen Scotland before going to the battlefield. My clan was in the Jacobites side . Ferguson. But we never got a mention on the battlefield. Scott
Too many still suffer the Scottish Cringe, which has infected Scotland from 1707 as the Westminster Governments planned. HISTORY - TEACHES. To destroy a nation you must deprive the people of their national consciousness. Treat them as a tribe and not as a nation, dilute their national pride, do not teach their history, propagate their language as inferior, imply they have a cultural void, emphasise their customs are primitive and dismiss independence as a barbaric anomaly. Reinhard Heydrich, ‘Protector’ of Czechoslovakia for the Third Reich, and one of the architects of the Holocaust. Job Done - thankfully - some are now awakening.
I had ancestors that fought on both sides, but I am most proud of my irish ancestors that stood there ground alongside the royal French Scots. Alba agus Èirinn gu bràth. Cuimhnighidh ar Luimneach agus ar Feall na Sassanach!!
Man, this song is powerful. I'm from Essex but have been to Inverness-Shire several times. Didn't see or hear the ghosts of Culloden when I saw the moor but I sure felt them. I see and hear them in my mind.
We are the sons and daughters of freedom loving Highlanders resisting monolithic London based imperialists. We keep our ancestors alive we still honor their memory and remember their bravery
Isla Grant is scheduled to visit the Australian island State of Tasmania later in 2015 on her farewell tour. May I be spared the time to hear again in life this gloriously emotive singer with such a crystal clear voice that blesses old ears.
True. Also, when we talk about wars (ex. when we study it for school) we only think about who wins and loses and about dates, we tend to forget about the people who actually fought and died on both sides :( But, thanks for watching and commenting on my video! ^^
We stood with America at the Alamo The Confederate flag came from the Scottish Saltire! We will stand shoulder to shoulder with you again!you are our Kin! Ready!! Aye Ready!
Have visited Drumossie Moor many times, in all kinds of weather. If there is ever a place where ghosts walk the earth, it is here.beautiful version of this song, especially with the pipes towards the end. Just when you think the tune is "Scotland the brave" it goes into this background melody..........
I understand what you mean: though I'm in no way linked with this fact or with Scottish blood or heritage, I cried when I firstly heard this song, and I almost cry every time I hear that...
Can you hear them, can you see them Marching proudly across the moor, Hear the wind blow thru the drifting snow, Tell me can you see them, the ghosts of Culloden. Many bravely fought and sadly they were slain, But they died with such pride and dignity, Their lives were not in vain, We still remember them, They fought to save their land, and died for liberty. Can you hear them, can you see them Marching proudly across the moor, Hear the wind blow thru the drifting snow, Tell me can you see them, the ghosts of Culloden. Thru the mist you'll hear - a lonely piper play, Listen carefully - you'll hear - a mournful cry, Swords and bayonets crash - as man to man they clash, They came to fight to live - and now they die. Can you hear them, can you see them Marching proudly across the moor, Hear the wind blow thru the drifting snow, Tell me can you see them, the ghosts of Culloden. Can you hear them, can you see them Marching proudly across the moor, Hear the wind blow thru the drifting snow, Tell me can you see them, the ghosts of Culloden.

I love this tune for what is was,....but i appriciate if it would be in our own style. ( but that being said.....we did influence the country tunes !!!)
Thanks for your words! Of course, during wars, I think it's easy for the soldiers to become "evil" even if they are on the right side -and again, your right side may be the wrong side for another-, but still if one fights for high ideas, to protect his family and his country, and he dies for them, and he does no wrong to women or children (I think of the battlefields in the past, where men fought each other), they deserve respect in my opinion.
I first heard this mournful tribute beginning of 2020 when it was used to honor the Benghazi martyrs and seal team #6 who were all killed to further an American political agenda. It was removed this week as purging/censorship continues. Just as relevant in our day as in the days past that it commemorates. May God bless all brave patriots worldwide.
Kinda ironic sense the Jacobites were fighting for a political agenda. The believed in the hereditary right of king James and despised protestants as he did. Most of the Jacobites were roman catholic and sought Scottish dominion. Neither side of this tale were in the right.

Indeed yes and it all gets muddled up. Many of Cumberland's men were Lowland Scots who hated the Highlanders. As a Freebooter I saw some horrible happenings and in one peace keeping force one of our allied tribes were cannibals - to their minds quite logical. Our main enemies were United Nations troops who were absolutely foul and we ended up flying out some of the female wreckage, 50% died on the flight and our best Dakota got shot up by 'friendly fire' to my disgust as the pilot!!

My fifth great grandfather Charles Stewart fought there. He survived, to be transported to North Carolina. We will never forget his Legacy of Honor.

Many many Scots weren't on the Jacobites side. The Jacobites were a political party and did not represent the interests of all Scotland.

Wow ,this really hits home .
I understand what you mean: though I'm in no way linked with this fact or with Scottish blood or heritage, I cried when I firstly heard this song, and I almost cry every time I hear that...
I am Irish but every time I hear this the hair stand on my head well done for writing about the battle
Can you hear them, can you see them
Marching proudly across the moor,
Hear the wind blow thru the drifting snow,
Tell me can you see them, the ghosts of Culloden.
Many bravely fought and sadly they were slain,
But they died with such pride and dignity,
Their lives were not in vain,
We still remember them,
They fought to save their land, and died for liberty.
Can you hear them, can you see them
Marching proudly across the moor,
Hear the wind blow thru the drifting snow,
Tell me can you see them, the ghosts of Culloden.
Thru the mist you'll hear - a lonely piper play,
Listen carefully - you'll hear - a mournful cry,
Swords and bayonets crash - as man to man they clash,
They came to fight to live - and now they die.
Can you hear them, can you see them
Marching proudly across the moor,
Hear the wind blow thru the drifting snow,
Tell me can you see them, the ghosts of Culloden.
Can you hear them, can you see them
Marching proudly across the moor,
Hear the wind blow thru the drifting snow,
Tell me can you see them, the ghosts of Culloden.
