- Hi Everyone,
It's Christos here, aka, THE FRAG! Today I am reviewing my new Fender Player Series Jazz Bass in beautiful Butter Cream (should be call it Butter Cream FROSTING - it is that delicious looking!) Today's video is split in four parts comprising of:
1. The Jazz Bass' specifications
2. Sound samples running through my Fender Rumble 25 watt bass amp
3. Discussing some of the modifications I plan to do (stay tuned for that video too)
4. Some things to look out for when buying Fender Player Series Basses
As promised here are a few links. The first of which is a review I did of my Fender Player Series Precision Bass:
• Fender Player Series P...
And the Obsidian Wire solder-less wiring kits:

Thanks for another great video! I really enjoyed your video on the Player Precision, so I was excited to see this one also. I love that buttercream color. Ironically, just about a month ago, I put some Seymour Duncan quarter pounders and the obsidian wiring kit in my jazz bass, and it came to life like never before! Sounds so smooth, and the pickups are so much hotter than the originals… Love it. Please keep us updated!
Hey Brandon. So nice to hear from you and thank you for your kind words. I'm just waiting for some parts, and cannot wait to work on this beast. I will certainly keep you posted, so please stay tuned. Great to hear your Jazz bass has turned into a tone monster. Keep ROCKING! 🤘🎸🤘🎸🤘💀
Obrigado Carlos.
Tenho certeza que você vai adorar o seu Fender Bass. Espero que você tenha muitos anos de diversão com isso. Continue arrasando! 🤘🎸🤘🎸🤘
Thank you for the awesome review of the Fender Player jazz bass! I decided to try out a 5 string and purchased a Player Plus jazz but as much as I wanted to be a 5-string player the neck is just too wide for me, so I'll be exchanging it for the 4-string... I am currently trying to decide between this exact model you have here or the Player Plus 4-string. I sure do love that beautiful Butter Cream finish! 😁 Anyway, just wanted to say I love your videos and hope you keeping making them! They are loads of fun!
Hi Joseph, thank you for your kind words. It really inspires me to hear positive feedback from good people like you. Like you, I did try a five string Fender bass, and I found the neck was too wide.
For what it's worth, I did notice the 12 inch radius neck profile more on the Precision bass, as it's wider than the Jazz bass, at least to the 12th fret. And it is nice and flat, making playing easier. Also, the maple 🍁 fretboards are not coated in a gloss finish in the Player Plus series. So it's a raw finish. While for my Player Series Jazz Bass, the fretboard has a gloss finish, which I prefer.
Hope this helps. Take care, and keep ROCKING! 🤘🎸🎸🤘
Love that bass riff from Sure Know Something. Great job!
Hi Gavin. Thanks for your kind words. Love KISS, and that bass line is so smooth. Keep ROCKING! 🎸 🤘🎸🤘
@@christosfragias592 Absolutely!! I have the same bass in the same finish coming this week. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the amp you're using there!
@@gdt76 awesome! You will love it. I was running through my Fender Rumble 25 watt bass amp. Please check out another video I have posted playing along to this great KISS track. Please subscribe, if you have not done so. 🤘🎸🤘🎸
@@christosfragias592 Will do! I will check it out. Nice chatting with you!
Thanks for this great review. I have a very cheap and old P-Bass since the early 90s when I first started to learn playing the bass (but never came deep into it) I just fell into it again and I am just planning to buy a new bass and this very instrument (even in this beautiful butter cream) is one of the basses on my list to choose from. This video (and the following on the upgraded one) does help to get a step closer to this one.
And I love that sure know something bassline - one of the best from KISS
Thank you so much for your kind words. The Butter Cream 🧈 is a lovely colour. Please also consider the Made In Japan Traditional series basses. They are similarly priced and with better quality. Yes, Sure Know Something is a classic. Keep ROCKING! 🤘🎸🎸🤘
@@christosfragias592 Thanks for this hint, but here in germany the MIJ-Fenders are rarely to find even at the big Vendors like Thomann and MusicStoreProfessional and the pricetag is about 1,5 as big if one finds them. And I have to confess - the eye is also playing and I am in deep love with those bright maple fingerboards this series offers. :)
Parabéns o meu chegou hoje é igual ao seu até na cor. Um abraço aqui do Brasil.
A wonderful video. Found it educational and very interesting. Have been eyeing one of these myself. I have a Squire 70s classic vibe and while my wallet says "no" to a new bass, my heart says "yes". This one seems like a pretty darn good instrument
Thank you so much for your kind words. Go for it! One can never have enough basses. 🎸🤘🎸🤘
@@christosfragias592 Yes! No matter how many basses one has, it's always one too less :D
I've got a P-Bass like this and I may get JB too. I haven't feel the need to upgrade anything. I think the stock pickup is very good. The bass is super light, so I'm not going to install a high mass bridge on it. I use flatwound strings which perfectly match a vintage style bridge. The only issue with mine were sharp fret edges, so it went to see a doctor (luthier). I was wondering if it's an issue with other models.
Hi there, thank you for your comments. The beauty about the universal appeal/sales of Fender products is that they offer owners so many aftermarket options. The stock equipment was adequate for my tastes however, I was seeking to improve the tone, the playability and feel. Similar to how Fender have improved the Player Series with the Player Plus Series. Thankfully, on this bass, the fret edges were nice and smooth. The Player Series Precision bass which I have also uploaded a review, did have sharp fret edges. However, I have noticed over time, that I have either gotten used to them or, I have compensated my playing style with that bass. So as to not cut my fingers. Keep ROCKING! 🤘🎸🤘🎸🤘
@@christosfragias592 Actually, I've got the Player Plus Jazz Bass V and the playability and feel is WAY better! Not only no sharp fret edges but also edgeless neck which feels awesome! I've just seen Sire announcing V8 models which have EDGELESS (r) necks (EDGELESS word is restricted), so it looks like Sire follows Fender's footsteps.
Thanks for the video Frage! Looks like it will be a fun project. It’s so rewarding to upgrade these bass guitars to your personal tastes. Would love to see when it’s all been upgraded. I got a dual concentric tone/volume control kit from star guitar systems on eBay, and settled on a humcancelling bartolini neck pickup and a hum cancelling suhr bridge pickup …hopefully I don’t run into phase issues but it’s all part of the fun. Even though I have an amount of pedals that reflects a probable unhealthy addiction, my favourite pedal for jazz bass is the $25 Behringer super fuzz… so many sounds out of that cheap plastic pedal….it’s just the most fun you can get for $25… good luck with the upgrade!
Hi Personal Freedom. Thank you so much for your comments. It certainly is rewarding seeing the fruits of one's labour paying off. Great to see you are doing the same with your gear, and I am sure your axe will play and sound insane. I will post an updated video when I have completed all my upgrades. Stay tuned, God Bless, and KEEP ROCKING!
99% of the time these mods are a waste of time, money and effort.
@@CNick75 I disagree, most people who play guitar a lot will really notice quite a difference on changing pickups, bridge, tuners etc… but if you want to get a cheaper stock guitar with no mods then go for it, nothing wrong with that at all
I wonder how many people know the song you are playing. One of my favourite bass lines to play. ;)
Hey Alfred. So true. Sure Know Something is such a smooth, sugary, and sultry bass line, that is one of my favourite bass lines to play, as well. Keep ROCKING! 🤘 🎸🎸🤘
Do you get any neck dive with this bass?
A little. However, given the Jazz bass is a bigger body, and has a narrower neck at the nut, it's not bad. I found the Fender Made In Japan Boxer series basses had really bad neck dive. As it has a lighter basswood body and larger vintage tuners.
@@christosfragias592 that's interesting, thanks for the reply, great videos 👌
What strings are you going to change to?
I have been using LaBella Deep Talkin Bass 760fs 45-105. Keep ROCKING! 🤘🎸🎸🤘
