- The Polish - Lithuanian Commonwealth. AKA that time poland was the largest country in Europe. Remember that? Yeah, me neither, but that doesn't mean that we can't have some fun learning and making fun of it.

Only thing missing was the attempt at reforms in late XVIII century, Poland had the first constitution and ministry of education in Europe.
Yeah, I kinda glossed over that one.
Nope not true the 1st constitution was San Marino’s one
@@kexPOL was it a codified constitution?
Maxim Gwiazda it was but than Russia and Prussia made a 2 partition because they didn’t like it
@@BB-hx4mj I was asking about San Marino constitution.
I found your channel through a comment under an Extra Credits video and I'm mad at the UA-cam algorithm for not recommending it to me, this video specifically.
I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video! The algorithm does what it does. XD
I found this in my recommended lol
Why has almost no one else covered this?
I don’t know. It’s a really interesting period I think!
Cos no one cares about Poland (jkjk)
*AND THEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVED*
Actually Hedvig was crowned as King of Poland (sic!) and when Jogaila was crowned, they both had the title of King of Poland and Hedvig had additionally the title of the Queen and Grand Duchess (wife of the King and Grand Duke)
The secret idea about her being crowned king was that so her husband could not basically steal the title and power from her.
5:31 then the winged hussars arrived

To say that the battle of viena of 1683 “saved Western Europe” is, in my opinion, a huge exaggeration. Even if vienna had fallen, there were still thousands of cities and fortresses for the ottomans to take.
@@franciscomm7675 indeed, but Austria was the bastion of the catholic faith, and the ottomans would've been near unstoppable at this point
Nils Wettlin
Absolutely not, the largest military power was catholic France which pretty much was allied with the Ottomans to weaken its Austrian/HRE rivals.
The war against the Ottomans lasted from 1683 to 1699.
From 1688 to 1697 there was at the same time as the war against the Ottomans also the Nine Years War of much of Europe against France (Louis XIV).
The Ottomans were defeated time and time again during the war, there’s no way that they somehow magically could’ve conquered Europe when they were already defeated by parts of the HRE (Austria, Bavaria, Saxony and some smaller contingents from Franconia, Baden etc.) and Poland at the Battle of Vienna.

Hedwig was "king" of Poland till her death. During this time she did some very important things. She was a great diplomat and commander (even though she was so young) in battles in Red Ruthenia.
Not a "king", but a king, dummy.
@@hmmkin6729 i meant that today we would call her queen but then she was crowned as a king...
@@karolszczerbien7885 She was a king then and why would it be different now? Her official title was the King of Poland and i believe though could be wrong about her being addressed as king.
In my opinion if you are crowned king, you are a king, if you are crowned queen, you are a queen.
@@hmmkin6729 Poland then had a monarch who was called king and was the ruler of the country. The title of queen had only his wife- wife of a ruler. Jadwiga was crowned king cuz she became a monarch not the wife of a king. Today we have for example queen elizabeth and her title- queen does not mean that she is a wife of ruler, but the monarch. I added the marks cuz it can be confusing for a person who is not keen on Polish history.
@@karolszczerbien7885 It seems that you do not understand that i am not comparing it to the present, but what happened then, not now. She became king because in Polish law, a queen cannot be the regnant or something, but the gender of the king was not specified so she was crowned the king.

Personal union with Germany sounds nice, but we have a legend (still told to this day) from the times of early kingdomhood that's moral is basically "it's better to commit suicide than to marry a German", so Lithuanian Grand Duke was like a perfect alternative to filthy Habsburg.
Name of the legend: "Wanda who didn't want a German".
That’s pretty funny. I wonder how history would be different if Germany and Poland got along better.
@@HistoryHouseProductions yeah, would be pretty different.
Maybe some mix between Roman Empire and EU? That was basically the vision of Otton III, the only German ruler Poland got along with.
But it probably was never possible. Polish history lessons basically start with in 966 Poland baptized itself so the Germans would finally stop attacking us with no reason and had to come up with some justification from now on.
But there were tries, the friendship with Otton III, leasing Prussia to Teutonic Knights (yeah, that didn't end well), serving in German army during WW1 (okay, Poles served in basically every army during that war, but we served *especially* in german one), agreeing at gunpoint that East Germany doesn't have to pay us reparations for WW2 that unified Germany still uses as excuse to not do so... (and we somehow are the only country that expected to deal with it, due to potential of Germany demanding Pomerania, even if Germany surrendered uncondintionally...)
@@HistoryHouseProductions How history would be different had Władysław IV:
- resigned from his rights to throne of Sweden for Sweden recognizing him as Tzar of Russia
- been baptized as Orthodox
- proceeded with his plans of dismantling Crimean Khanate with help of Cossacks
- made Cossacks equal in rights to nobles of Poland and Lithuania
- made Ukraine third part of Commonwealth
- and to complete this fantasy made a deal with Sweden that on event of his and his brother death without an heir Poland should enter personal union with Sweden once again, no change of religion for Swedish monarch needed.
@@PobortzaPl based on your lil list, you understand the history of everything NOT-Russia about as well as Putin. You clearly didn’t comprehend the video you’re commenting under, and likely have trouble recognizing things like: maps. Modern-day Ukraine WAS in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. All of it. Absolutely everything East of the Commonwealth, was The Russian Empire, bruh.
Russia has a nasty habit of swallowing-up everything near it because it’s a kleptocracy eternally run by maniacs who can’t read good, or history good either.
Oh, and these Cossacks you speak of are inbred Tsar fanboys, whose hobbies include war criming, terrorism, high-kicks, genociding of non-Cossacks, and doing competitive dance-offs with each other whilst atop steep cliffsides on someone else’s land. The “sack” part of their ancient name was given to memorialize their eternal embodiment of the scrotum.
@Living Dead Girl Look for Zaporozian Host or Kozacy Zaporoscy. Look for 1645/6 Vladislav IV plans for war to subjugate Crimean Khanate. Check whom Muscovite boyars had chosen for their tzar after battle of Klushino 1610.
Also, there are still Cossacks in Ukraine who are definitely anti-Russian.

I hate how you only say Poland. Its history of both countries not just Poland.
It depends on the time period. Later on in the commonwealth "Poland/Polish" became essentially names of a macro-nation that housed many different nations under that same umbrella.

Deoxyribose your are so right.
I second that!
Actually there was a period of history that was even worse for the PLC economically, the great northern war at the beginning of the XVIIIth century when Swedes and Russians (typical) ransacked the country even more than during the deluge and ww2. Loved the video though, it's refreshing to see a foreign history channel covering Polish history accurately :)
You made some mistakes in this video because you assumed that there is only one Elizabeth in this story but they are actually two of them (later three but that's another story). So there is Elizabeth of Poland and Elizabeth of Bosnia.
First is sister of Casimir the Great and mother of Louis the Great and the second is wife of Louis the Great and mother of Jadwiga.
"Szlachta" simply means "Nobility" or "Nobles"... that's all there is to it. The first nobles were knights. Then the status was simply hereditary, though in some cases noble status, complete with a new coat of arms, could be awarded for gallantry in military service or whatnot.
Right, but the way nobility worked in Poland was different than Western Europe. I think that that’s what I was trying to get across. :)
@@HistoryHouseProductions Well the way it came out it ended up sounding like a completely different thing instead and not a form of nobility at all 😅. Just some weird voting caste from all levels of social hierarchy... which really wasn't the case 😅. It's true that some Polish nobility ended up impoverished (yet still retained their privileges), but as a general rule, they were knights at first and feudal lords/landowners later. Take it from a Polish noble, not that it means much nowadays though, haha!
God yes finally it’s back

I want to start a channel of my own and i wanna learn the animation used in this video. could anyoneeeee tell me where to start?

Why do some people just literally ignore that this is not only Poland, it's also freaking *Lithuania*. How stupid can you be to just call whole country as just Poland... That is just hilarious...
Remember. Even though it was called the polish "Lithuanian" commonwealth. The only official language was Polish. Lithuanian was Infact repressed. Lithuania also lost huge tracts of land. And their cultural identity was "polanised"
@@aneesh2115 Oh yeah... But the actual agreements told that both states are equal. There were common and separate things that these two states had. You mentioned just the effect of polonization. If that would be the freaking case, why even adding Lithuania in the name...

1:50 but how
Fun fact: Prussia was originally founded (or East Prussia) as a principality/duchy within the commonwealth, for mostly German nobilities (which is another 'progress' of the PL Commonwealth, racial and ethnical tolerance, which includes Catholic and Protestant Germans). And Prussia in turn led the unification of Germany, the foundation of modern Germany. So in a nutshell... There'd be no Germany without Poland XD
I know! It’s pretty interesting!
@@HistoryHouseProductions And it's also funny that to some extent without Poland there probably wouldn't be Habsburg Austrian Empire too... Like the Ottomans were literally outside Vienna before Polish crushed them. Which means... 2 out of 3 partition participants won't exist without Polish in the first place...
*Prussia was only German in nobility. The vast majority were Prussian-Lithuanians who eventually were assimilated

He was right calling Commonwealth just ,,Poland", because Poles were the ones in charge and Litheuenian was not even official language in that country.
Neat
Szlachta was basically gentry. The wealth of the members differed greatly - some were equal to peasents when it came to money, some were również cher then the king. And it wasn't that hard to join that group - you could join the army and prove that you're brave enough or jist lie your way in - tbh no one cared that much

So, you may be seeing these guys talking about how Jadwiga was actually a King... and was also female. But what I don’t see why it is like this. I’ll tell you.
Basically Queen wasn’t an existing title in Poland but that doesn’t mean a woman couldn’t be the monarch. So, a female couldn’t be queen but they could be King.
I liked how you have noted the fact that members of Szlachta were sometimes poor and sometimes rich, however they were all considered to be the nobility - szlachta is a polish word for nobility. They were not members of different classes although one could be knighted and then become a Szlachcic. The main requirement was to own land.
I would also note that there was a distinction between Szlachta and Magnateria - Szlachta was basicallly composed of lesser knights and such and Maganteria of very wealthy and influential families that owned a lot of land. Correspondingly the Szlachta sat in the lower house of the Parliament (Sejm) while Maganteria was in the Senate. Although due to their wealth it is debatable if Magnateria simply controlled both
That's really interesting! Thank you for sharing and thanks again for watching!

First of all the Polish army made up only about 1/3 of the relief army that fought at the Battle of Vienna.
Less than 1/3 if we also include the garrison of Vienna that was also fighting against the Ottomans during the battle.
The bulk of the army were Imperial Austrian and German troops (with the largest contingents from Bavaria and Saxony).
Furthermore the Polish troops on the right wing arrived late for the battle, the Austrian and German troops were already fighting half a day before the Polish infantry arrived.
The Polish cavalry really only entered the battle in the evening after pretty much a whole day of fighting when the Ottomans were already facing defeat (the right wing of the Ottomans was routed and the center under infantry attack from three sides).
In the end even if the Ottomans would’ve conquered Vienna there’s no way that they could’ve conquered Europe.
Large parts of Europe fought against France (Nine Years War 1688-1697) whilst the war against the Ottomans (1683-1699) was going on...
Louis XIV was basically more of a threat than the Ottomans.
