Italia 1990 is widely remembered as the most badly played world cup. Few goals, much incidents and excessive defensive playing in general.
That's true, But don't forget that Germany was an exception in that point. Think about their brilliant 4-1 victory against Yugoslavia or the match against the Netherlands, which was the best in the whole tournament.

That's true, Germany did not play that easy later in tournament as they did in the group stage or against Netherlands. But still they deserved to win the world cup, because no other team that played directly against them was better than them. The only match that was really close was the semi final against England, so if Germany would have lost that, nobody could complain about that. But Argentina were by far not playing on the same level as Germany.
Very true they where better offensively than any other team in the first round..and Italy where the best defensive team in that World Cup but I still think Germany got lucky that Argentina beat Italy on.penalties..to play Italy in Rome in that type of magnitide especially a Final..it would be very hard for Germany to beat Italy infront of the huge home crowd with all the support..remember italy never lossed in Rome during the tournament and never allowed a goal..it was only when the semi final shifted to Naples is when Italy lossed on penalties..Rome was a completely different atmosphere for the italians..we very strong in Rome..compared to playing the only one game away in Naples

Sergio Goycochea was the absolute surprise, Maradona was the leader and Julio Grondona was the great unsung hero.
Caniggia was an amazing player. I remember his cool lob over a keeper when playing for Roma.

Maradona is indeed the God of football, he wasn't scoring 100 goals par game, but he owns the game. That what has changed in 2017, when the highest goal scorer in the champions league n league will definitely become the ballon d'or. We AR judged today by the number of goals we score, not by the amount of importance we add to the team.

Italia '90 was Maradona's worst World Cup. He really did not play well. He played well in Espana '82 but was violently fouled all the time. USA '94 should have been a great WC for him too.

Maradona was a bit less dominant in Mexico? Uh... yeah. Alright. Go and do some research before you respond. He wasn't dominant at all in Italia '90- aside from his assist to Caniggia and a few other things he did in that tournament, he was really very ineffective at that WC.

I decided to be a goalkeeper watching mr goycochea. Still gives me goosebumps watching those games. Maradona and cannigia were great but to me this man kept Argentina alive in 90 wc. I still imagine if he had saved that penalty at final. My hero.

Maradona would have gone down in history as the greatest footballer ever if he had the same professionalism as Messi/Ronaldo. The most amazing fact about the two latter and perhaps best footballers ever is their determination and long time commitment to a game where many seem to rest on their laurels for too long. Maradona at his peak had it all and he played in a time where horrible tackles from behind weren´t punished as they are today, unfortunately he lacked the stamina and will to see his talent prevail throughout the ages.

I beg to differ...penalties not just lottery...it involves quality, competence, emotional strenghth, training (yes, some coaches refuse to train penalties at all). The only ones I hear complaining about penalties labeling it as lottery are the ones at the losing end of the deal....

Goycochea had a lot of practice saving penalties in high-stakes games. In the 1986 "Champions League" final, as Barcelona's goalie he defended 3 consecutive penalties . However, the GK of Steaua (Duckadam) defended 4 consecutive ones, at which point Steaua won the shootout (2-0)

yassiamy Germany were "gifted" this title? LOL!! Granted, that PK call was weak, compared to the one missed one minutes earlier when Goycochea fouled Augenthaler in the box. Germany outplayed Argentina in this game. They created more scoring chances, and had they been a tad more clinical, they would have ran Argentina out of the building. The 1-0 scoreline was actually flattering, considering Argentina was planning on playing for PKs.

the PK decision was not weak , it was not a penalty sir , and you can ask Andreas Brehme the penalty scorer about it .
When a team get a penalty in the last 10 minutes for an obvious dive only a fool will give it ....then yes this team was gifted the title.
by the way watch the game one more time , i agree Germany were controlling the ball but they created very little chances to score .
and it seemed the only way for them to score is by a penalty and that what happened exactly (voller dive for it) .

When I say that the PK call was weak, what I mean is that had the referee been in a better position, he probably would not have given the penalty. Sensini made a fair challenge, and he fouled Voller, but it was not enough to justify a penalty.
Fifa ⚽️ didn't want Argentina to win the second World Cup in a row.
The old trick: the referee had to give out that penalty.

If it hadn't been for Goycochea, Argentina would not have beaten Yugoslavia. He was the clear standout of that team- the Argentine side really didn't deserve to make it to the final. Nearly all of those guys on that squad- Burruchaga, Cannigia and even Maradona were all off form. And from an emotional view, the Argentine side in Italia '90 embodied everything that was wrong with that tournament- it was South American gamesmanship at its most cynical, combined with whining, bitching, bad tempered and sometimes violent football. I hope Argentinians remember their national side from that tournament with shame. Italia '90 was one of the worst WC's ever. Germany, England, Italy and Cameroon were the best squads of that tournament.

I saw the whole game. Argentina made a valid goal that was disallowed, so the penalty shootout was unfair.

It was the germans the ones who flopped all over the field in the finals and that is precisely what gave them the advantage (a red card and a penalty) yet to some people it was Argentina the dirty ones. As usually, if its a blonde dude who cheats nobody notices it, if it is someone with dark skin everyone is like "oh, that cheater!".
