It was an Operation Lifesaver special. CSX invited us to ride in the locomotive with them to shoot the view out the windshield. I wish we'd have brought a tripod, though. But there were six of us crammed in that cab. DH
Some of the best dang crew communication I've ever seen, very well done, getting authority into the form b, making sure he had a correct on the readback, engineer focusing on running the train and acknowledging signals --- makes me feel good a crew taking care of business on the rails----and no i'm not a manager, im a conductor/cutback engineer just giving respect to a crew where respect is due!!!! GREAT JOB GUYS!!
It's a Nathan K5LA. The early Amtrak F40s were originally equipped with the Nathan P5a, but Amtrak adopted the K5LA as its official "fleet horn" after 1979. The exception to this were the GE electric E60s in the northeast corridor, which were equipped with the Nathan P-01235 (a modified P5a horn) and the classic electric GG1s, which kept their Leslie A-200 "honker" horns unit their retirement.
AMTK350 5:15 if the train hit that person that is the engineers see it’s sad and scary for them and can cause serious problems in the head there is a reason why rail fans are split into two groups one who respects the rules and then there are foamers the ones who ruined it for the rest of us
I've seen this piece somewhere before. I like the way it ended with the engineer "Biscuit" reminding us to stop, look and listen. , he made one statement that summarizes the whole thing in that the engineer and conductor have to live with the knowledge that they were in involved in a deadly accident that killed a personor people. It is a serious game of rock, paper, scissors and, and not worth playing.
WOW. I really feel I am the engineer at the throttle of the F40PH hauling THE CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR my favorite train. As RIO GRANDE slogan says THRU THE ROCKIES NOT AROUND THEM.
man i love the F-40s. great stuff man. well done. i use to ride them alot as a teen on the Seaboard between Raleigh-Richmond. now im stuck driving catfish. lol great vid bud.
I know it's to late to say,but i saw this video a couple of months after it was posted, never knew who distant signal was at the time,i only found out today who distant signal was. Biscuit did know how to blow that K5LA.
i got to ride in the original amtrak f40s!they were awesome to ride in at 80mph!!!!i got to have like 15 cab rides before amtrak got rid of the f40s off there active roster!what a neat experience!to bad they scrapped most of them!:(
Man I love workin the 26L's, I damn the fastbrake!!!, cant hear the damn air!,we here on Queensland Rail in NSW Australia, cant use our cell phones whist driving our engines, and it makes it hard sometimes to get a hold of the train controller on our radios sometimes, nice video man.
I've ridden so many times on this same mailine on Amtrak. Always enjoyed riding in the Budd Heritage Fleet cars. Roomy, large windows, and much better riding qualities than the Amfleet "Amcans". I still remember when it was double-tracked between Tampa Union Station and Orient Rd. Rumor is that if we get commuter rail, it may be double tracked again thru to Orlando.
Pretty much the same, but it depends on tuning. Amtrak's horns are "all bells forward" whereas most freight engine applications are "3 forward-2 rearward". You would have to get an ex-Amtrak horn to get the EXACT sound. Plus, you won't endear yourself to neighbors much with such a project. :-))
Keep in mind that that wasn't freight. It's their business train. Also probably a good reason they're doing everything by the book, seeing as how the person who's signature is on their pay check may very well be aboard that train. That part at the end, great interview with "Biscuit" there
Great video! Too bad that BNSF has ZERO Executive Power and that the Norfolk Southern got rid of their beautiful F-Units (freshly rebuilt) under PSR! ;-(
@metroliner89 Yes, it's an F40. Look at the windshields inside of the cab when the camera zooms away. Those angles are unmistakable. I miss these tough old workhorses.
I talked to a CSX conductor and he said they're taught with respect to train /car /people accidents that it's not a question if but when it happens. It happened to him when a person stepped out in front of their moving train.. I have a rule. If I can't completely cross a railroad crossing I won't cross it until completely clear. It doesn't matter if its a class on3 railroad or a short line that runs every third Tuesday of every other month or abandoned. You never know when a train could come.
@produKtNZ In the US, most railways abide by the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), which was decided upon way back in the early days of the railroads. Back then, grade crossings were not that frequent, and it was decided that it is more important to make darn sure anybody trying to cross heard the train coming. So, they decided that the whistle signal long long short long was a good way to let people know you were about to go over a crossing, and you gotta blow that for every crossing...
Dang thats fairly fast operating speed for the number of grade crossings he was encountering. They really keep the freight trains slow around here until they pass the last major grade crossing.
When I whistled for some crossings, I ended the long, long, short, loooong just as we reached the crossing. This gave MORE warning, EARLIER, where it mattered. For non signalled crossings, it is important to give even more warning, starting earlier. For crossings with signals, horn is not needed. At crossings where there was no one at or approaching the crossing, I opened the horn valve just enough to be much softer but "legal".
I was looking at some of the cars stopped at the grade crossings as the train passed by and happen to notice a 1997-04 Ford F150 and a Chevy TrailBlazer which was released in 2001 as a 2002 model. So sometime between 2001 and 2004 maybe, I'm assuming. Since "several years" would have to be at least 3 at the least.
I've known Biscuit for years, never got to work with him but my cousin has many times. He retired a few years ago. A very good friend of the family. I am curious though, who was the conductor in the video?
Distant Signal. Way better than those new ones with the electronic brake controls.. the best and most reassuring part of a manual independent brake is you can actual feel the air pressure
Operation Lifesaver is an education program where trains travel around and their crews and others on board teach people how to act safely around railroad tracks. Most of what they teach is probably simple common sense, but a lot of children, teens and even adults lack that as far as train safety is concerned.
I agree with you Veronica. But passenger train operation is so heavily burdened with liabilities and headaches, add to that it's generally a money losing proposition. Hence, that's why the we have Amtrak. At least now there is more support for it.
Safety critical comunication is all part of the job on the railroad/railway nowadays. If not, it should be. All our SC coms in the UK network is recorded and analised. But yeah, good job!.
skyav8r, a train is on a fixed path. Standing near the tracks is a LOT less dangerous than standing on a curb where cars, trucks and buses can veer off course at any moment and mow you down. I haven't heard of any trains derailing lately and mowing someone down who was standing 5-10 feet from the rails. People are just more dramatic about standing near a train because it's so big and intimidating. It's less dangerous to stand 5-10 feet from a train than on a busy street corner.
I'm an engineer myself and YES it makes u sick when idiots try to beat the train. Even at 10mph it will take a bit to stop 20-25 loaded tankcars. These guys are well over 70mph. Train vs car: NO CHANCE!!! Think safe people. Make our jobs easier. Thanks!

Yes, Biscuit Brannon is one of the greats.
I remember seeing this video years ago. I think I was in Middle School when I first saw it. I didn’t know you were the owner of this video, Danny.

Great video!!!!!! Would like to see more in cab ride videos. When I thought I've seen all you have to throw out there... I find more...Great job
The Conrail SD60 is patched so this has to be late 1999 or most likely the early 2000s.
TheThomasSproduction bring back Conrail
Nice, been in the cab a few times over my 30 years working around trains . thanks for sharing
3:07 Too close to the tracks!
Sean Ingram That’s how close I was two days ago
@@zanemixproductions5542 then you're stupid
@@DannyTOG no.

good job guys for always keeping in on radio and checking signals speed and commutation to dispatch
Always safety first. But when it's safe and authorized to do so, I love to see a nice wide-open throttle.
Good video.
I'm glad we have closed crossings in Scotland. Those open road crossings would give me a heart attack.
Hey Man cool video i love that loud horn 😄!
judging by the time, hes wearing conrail safety glasses. probably 1990's im guessing? Nice ride
Awesome video. Thanks 👍👍👍❤️
This is one of my all time favorite videos on youtube
I've seen this piece somewhere before. i love that awesome horn
No idea. It's that same one that Amtrak had on it's F-40's. All Bells forward.
the best cab video i've seen. show some more of him talking, that was interesting.
Superior video! I saw this set yesterday in of all places, Bound Brook, New Jersey! Love this, lots of K5LA horn, 5*.
I think this was shot somewhere in the 1990's. They almost had to be painted in YN2.
Wonder who that photographer was - at 3:09 he realized he was too close !
That was taken back when 9992 was still in CSX Colors before 2021 When CSX Repainted her into the B&O Colors and renumbered her to CSX3.
WOW. I really feel I am the engineer at the throttle of the F40PH hauling THE CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR my favorite train. As RIO GRANDE slogan says THRU THE ROCKIES NOT AROUND THEM.

Pentrex would be scared if you made videos. Yours are great!

Tampa, Plant City, Lakeland, Auburndale, all in Florida.
that right that why I love the RR!.
I imagine it's a K5LA or whatever model that Amtrak uses, since those are ex-Amtrak units.
Great video! Too bad that BNSF has ZERO Executive Power and that the Norfolk Southern got rid of their beautiful F-Units (freshly rebuilt) under PSR! ;-(
awsome video
@metroliner89 Yes, it's an F40. Look at the windshields inside of the cab when the camera zooms away. Those angles are unmistakable. I miss these tough old workhorses.
Yeah. CSX bought 4 of them from Amtrak
Nice sounding K5!
Nice video Thank you
Yes, because if they don't blow the horn enough and they hit someone the engineer is personally responsible! The RR won't take the blame.
Is there a way to get a ticket on the OCS or get an invite?
I've never been able to get one and I've certainly tried. This trip was an Operation Lifesaver Media special. They don't do those anymore
I talked to a CSX conductor and he said they're taught with respect to train /car /people accidents that it's not a question if but when it happens. hey, no problem, yes this is the well known K5LA, found on many passenger and some freight locomotives.
cool video!
cool video awesome horn action five stars nice job.
I don't think Ive ever seen a csx train go that fast!!!
Awesome TY
It was an F40.
cool Conrail unit
Seattle Citi Rail the guy standing on the side of the tracks moved his camera out of the way before his camera got flattened
Definitely a Nathan Airchime K5LA, budd.
ok thanks for clarifying that for me.
Dang thats fairly fast operating speed for the number of grade crossings he was encountering. They really keep the freight trains slow around here until they pass the last major grade crossing.
loved the k5la. in virginia i would see those giants rumble through with ditch lights flashing strobes.
That looks like a really cluttered and uncomfortable driving desk.
When I whistled for some crossings, I ended the long, long, short, loooong just as we reached the crossing.

At crossings where there was no one at or approaching the crossing, I opened the horn valve just enough to be much softer but "legal".
Why do trains keep sounding their horn after they have cleared the intersection? What's the matter with them?
For one, they must sound each time they approach a crossing, marked or not. There's a lot them out there in farming areas
When was this shot? Early 2000s?
It was uploaded in 2007 and in the description he said this happened several years prior to him uploading it. So yeah, probably around 2003.
TheThomasSproduction 2007

that was answering JTinGR's question, btw.
Wow you lucky man!
I've known Biscuit for years, never got to work with him but my cousin has many times. He retired a few years ago. A very good friend of the family. I am curious though, who was the conductor in the video?
Really nice video, good end
I can hear him getting permission into a form B. But the foreman won't get back to him on the repeat...story of my life.
Nice leslie!!!
PS good engineer you got there.
Wow that's pretty cool how did you manage to get a cab ride
Ah, a proper control stand
Yeah, pretty cool, eh?
Distant Signal. Way better than those new ones with the electronic brake controls.. the best and most reassuring part of a manual independent brake is you can actual feel the air pressure

Well Its a good F40PH because its an Ex-Amtrak F40. THe horn was a K5LA
February 2002 or thereabouts.
...and WHERE have you seen it before? I own the original field tapes and , to my knowledge, it was never broadcast or duplicated. just curious.
DH
DANG we were on the east cost during that time.
@trainwatcher116 Yup!
Safety critical comunication is all part of the job on the railroad/railway nowadays. If not, it should be. All our SC coms in the UK network is recorded and analised. But yeah, good job!.
That's Because THEY ARE the F40s that used to run on Amtrak

Yes, that was a rare day for me.
how fast are they aloud to go beacuse they are rollin
ok,i got it!!!!!
cool
Yes it is a K5LA
Yep, nice meet. But I don't know the freight train it led.
