Excellent information! I have an issue with my Nutone IM4406 Master Station wherein it is making intermittent "click" noise (very annoying!). I tried a reset but that didn't help. Any suggestions? Also, how can I "turn off" the system? Appreciate your help!
HI VB: You most likely have a problem that being caused by a faulty Remote Station or a cable of wires that connect a Remote Station to the Master Station. It is probably not a Master Station Problem. The further information I have from you, says that when the clicking happens and the Radio is playing - the radio switches off (it's actually has been muted) while the clicking is happening - then when the clicking stops - the Radio can be heard again. This would seem to support my Remote Station or Wiring problem idea. You need to first determine if the problem is with the IM4406 Master Station or if it's caused by something beyond the Master Station. To do this - you need to open up the IM4406 - disconnect the 5 cables that connect the Master Station to the Terminal Board and the wait to see it the clicking occurs anymore. If this stops the clicking - you have a faulty Remote Station or a wiring problem - if the clicking still occurs, you have a Master Station Problem. Hi Pat: The clicking noise is coming from the Audio / Intercom Relays inside the Master Station. These normally click when you are deliberately using the Intercom functions for communication. If your Relays are clicking on their own - it is likely that it being caused by either a problem with a Switch Board inside a Remote Station - or - a short in the wiring that connects a Remote Station to the Master Station - or - both. To isolate the source of the problem, you will need to disconnect the wiring from the Remote Stations - from the Terminal Board - verify that the problem no longer occurs - then one-by-one reconnect each set of wires waiting long enough between each reconnection - to insure the problem doesn't occur. If you have outdoor Patio Stations - and they get wet when it rains - you could try disconnecting these outside - to see if they're the source of the problem. Hi Planet, Resetting your IM4406 will probably not solve your IU problem, but give it a try and see what happens. My 4406 firmware seems to "rot out" after adding more intercoms to the setup. Stations connected one at a time with nothing else will seem to work properly but when multiple stations are connected, strange things start to happen. Stations that were "listening" after indoor talk now drop back to the radio when button released. As a computer tech guy I was suspecting parts of firmware getting blown out and your video seems very much on point to me. Q1 - Is the reset button functionally the same as power cycling the master? (I've been power cycling to reset by flicking the breaker - does the reset button do more?) Q2 - Is there an updated firmware and is there a reload firmware capability? Q3 - If no inbuilt firmware reload, can you pull the chip and send to be upgraded assuming an upgraded firmware exists? Q4 - Is there an info readout telling what firmware is onboard? Q5 - The firmware degradation issue is repeating. What could cause this to happen. It seems that will tend to happen as multiple stations are connected and playing music. Both transformers read 20 volts...
Hi Steve: I'm going to start by saying I think you're chasing down the wrong rabbit hole with you Firmware "Rot Out" idea. To answer your questions directly: Q1 - The Reset Button performs a Reset on the Micro-Controller only. Switching the circuit breaker off, shuts down the entire Master Station (waiting long enough for all components to fully discharge) Q2- There is no Firmware update and the is no provision on the board to update the Firmware Q3 - No Q4- No Q5- The Micro-Controller is mainly responsible for driving the Display - Clock and Timer functions - CD Player Controls - Activation of different Audio Inputs, including the Chime input - Remote Music Control Functions - Automated Tuner Functions - and minimally Intercom Functions. Primarily - Intercom Control Functions are handled by discreet circuits on the Main Audio Board. Without knowing more details about your 4406 (IM or IMA version - when was it manufactured - where you live, which state - how many stations are connected to it, etc.) I cannot offer any meaningful ideas about what you are reporting. What I can say it that over the past 4 years we have rebuilt over 200 4406's (both IM and IMA) and I would say that only 4-5 units had Micro-Controller issues. These units were always from situations where a defined lightening event likely cause the damage. +palumbo9 : Hi Richard, do you have an IM or IMA4406? If you have an IM4406 and the CD Player has reached the end of its life, there is no reliable repair available for it. If you have an IMA4406, NuTone still has CD Players Repair Kits Available, we have these in stock Sometimes other more basic problems with the IM/IMA4406 can cause the CD Player to stop working and when these problems are repaired the CD will work again. Hi, will the rest feature help with the " IU " error message. I believe this message resulted from a power blackout. Thanks!
Hi Planet, Resetting your IM4406 will probably not solve your IU problem, but give it a try and see what happens. If it does not correct the problem it means that your IM4406 has other problems that may have been exaggerated by the power outage.
(I've been power cycling to reset by flicking the breaker - does the reset button do more?)
Q2 - Is there an updated firmware and is there a reload firmware capability?
Q3 - If no inbuilt firmware reload, can you pull the chip and send to be upgraded assuming an upgraded firmware exists?
Q4 - Is there an info readout telling what firmware is onboard?
Q5 - The firmware degradation issue is repeating. What could cause this to happen. It seems that will tend to happen as multiple stations are connected and playing music. Both transformers read 20 volts...
Hi Steve: I'm going to start by saying I think you're chasing down the wrong rabbit hole with you Firmware "Rot Out" idea.
To answer your questions directly:
Q1 - The Reset Button performs a Reset on the Micro-Controller only. Switching the circuit breaker off, shuts down the entire Master Station (waiting long enough for all components to fully discharge)
Q2- There is no Firmware update and the is no provision on the board to update the Firmware
Q3 - No
Q4- No
Q5- The Micro-Controller is mainly responsible for driving the Display - Clock and Timer functions - CD Player Controls - Activation of different Audio Inputs, including the Chime input - Remote Music Control Functions - Automated Tuner Functions - and minimally Intercom Functions.
You are welcome to fill out an "Intercom repair Request" form and once I receive it, I'll contact you directly to discuss the problems with your 4406 and its repair

I just tried the reset in hopes that the clock would work, but I can now reset it but it does not progress past the time I set. Let me know if I am doing something else wrong.
Hi Kelly: I don;t have enough information to offer any specific advise. You will need to provide more background and detailed information about your system and what's wrong and why you're performing a Reset. - Chris
my radio works(everything works) except the disc player. I reset it ,but, nothing happened. Is there some adjustment mechanism that I am missing?richard
+palumbo9 : Hi Richard, do you have an IM or IMA4406? If you have an IM4406 and the CD Player has reached the end of its life, there is no reliable repair available for it.
If you have an IMA4406, NuTone still has CD Players Repair Kits Available, we have these in stock
Sometimes other more basic problems with the IM/IMA4406 can cause the CD Player to stop working and when these problems are repaired the CD will work again.
None of this is typically a do-it-yourself repair
Another popular option is is add an External Audio Jack to the IM/IMA4406 and use a BlueTooth Receiver with it. Here are some Videos about adding this feature: ua-cam.com/play/PLsTvqKsBnGYdC28d_5P2CQXAhtUS6f_2S.html

Thank you for the video. For others....skip to the 9 minute mark for the reset procedure.
Doorbell stopped working. Did a reset, but it did not fix the problem. Any other suggestions?
Hi Linda: Without more detailed information, I can only suggest that you try the simple things first -
1. Check the Push Button
2. Check the Chime Module in the IM4406
3. Test the wiring between the Button and the Chime Module
You can also call me to discuss the problem -

Will the reset fix a problem where the master can not communicate with the remotes. Also I can not hear from my door bell unit
Hi Peter: Yes, No, Sometimes, Maybe - It depends on if your IM / /IMA4406 is not working correctly because the Micro-Controller needs to be reset - or if there are other problems - Give a Reset a try and see what happens
If the reset doesn't solve the problems - you can always contact me directly - Chris 925-743-8236
OMG way too much information to do a simple reset Could have done this video in less than 30sec Should retitle it Total System Overview
Hi Thomas: The point of all of my Videos is to educate people and pass along some knowledge so they have an understanding of why they are doing whatever is described in the Video.
Without the background information and explanation, no one will learn anything. - Chris
