IGN as a company makes me suffer so much
It's more like him complaining about anime he didn't like. The recurring theme in his recent videos is him bashing Demon Slayer. I get it, it's cool to trash popular anime, but it's not as bad as he makes it out to be

When I saw Johan, My hope in IGN was restored,
Then I saw Naruto in 3rd place and that hope was all lost.
I was expecting Gintoki, Okabe, Mob, Thorfinn, Violet Evergarden anything of the sort.
But IGN never fails to disappoint

They picked Kakashi and Naruto from the anime when we have the likes of Pain and Itachi, heck even Sasuke is alot more interesting and complex compared to Naruto, it's clear as day that they went with popularity not with the better writing.

Ya, theres not a lot to his character. If they were to put someone from Demon Slayer on that list, me personally I think it should've been one of the top 3 uppermoons. Although their not really the most iconic, their still a whole lot more interesting than Tanjiro is
The animation and the modern iconography is top notch though. Even as a seasoned anime enthusiast that doesnt hop on every trend there is, I pretty much liked the setting of this one. And I disagree with the premise that a good character design for a protagonist has to be one way or another. As long as the character is believable and undergoes difficulties that changes that character in a manner that is similarly believable for the recipient, it is a good fictional character. Life is a long long process and you dont start out with the old cynical anti-hero or the smooth OP character that wants his/her revenge. I mean you could, but you would at least need to give him/her some backstory at some point. In Demon Slayer, the audience is younger (duh!), so the backstory is where the story begins. No foul, no harm - as long as the character gets those critical adjustments along the journey. I saw that happening with Naruto and a little with Goku. These characters dont have to be one-size that fits all.
these is a lot of depth to his character and I do feel like he should be on this list but not at 12 maybe at 21 or something. But what u said i absolutely don't agree with.

All of Demon Slayer is that - simple, nothing new, but done very well.

I don't see how anyone can logically but him above character like that who not only are super well written but also super influential. Like there are so many lelouch clones now a days, heck you can even count eren as one. Well guts has influenced so many characters. It's actually mind-boggling someone can think Tanjiro is better.
Johan is perfectly placed. When I watched Monster and saw Johan in like episode 4, I was like, how can they possibly make this villain interesting for 74 episodes, and they just did so well
Mob would be a good pick, but Reigan would be a perfect pick! How many anime characters do you know that can BS their way into a stronghold of dangerous psychics and make it all the way to the final boss without a single scratch??? And he just got better and better from there, from normal-guy punching the second strongest Claw member into submission (though that was admittedly circumstantial) to trying to pull one over on the number one, and even struggling through a tantrum from the actual strongest psychic around Mob just to have a heart to heart with him! Not to mention how great he is outside of battles, with his many talents and his own relatable as heck flaws!

Gintoki is one of my favorite anime characters and my favorite shonen mc BUT I wouldn't put him as #1 but I at least think he should of been in the list throughout the series we learn more and more depth about him
He's easily one of the best shonen protagonists. No mention of Raoh either.

I think it is very different to have a Iconic character list and a best character list. And even though they kind of made a "most iconic" list, they also put Johan from Monster in 4th place, and that is no where near as iconic, even though a very good character.
And in a list where it is Iconic characters, Kirito actually deserves to be there. He might be the most hated character in anime history, not for being despicable like the Bitch from Shield Hero, but you get an immediate negative reaction when seeing Kirito. He reminds everyone of how good SOA could have been and how it turned into a harem anime with the most uninteresting OP protagonist. Kirito alone made so many people quit anime, he is infamous.

I read Demon Slayer for like 20 chapters and decided that it's absolute trash, like bottom 5 manga I've ever read in my life, so I never even bothered watching the anime.@@minzblatt
As a massive One Piece fan it’s funny to see how mainstream perception of the series and Luffy has changed so quickly, a few years ago he would be on this list for sure but I know he would never be that high. I’m not mad at it though because he’s my favorite and I’m biased😂

That's where you're wrong. Guts from the 97 anime is amazing. I never would've been a Berserk fan without that anime. Also without the anime, we would never have gotten the equally amazing Guts' Theme

@@armaanb.6566 vash is a pacifist in a world where violence is law. its a wild west type gunslinging world, and trouble follows vash because of the massive bounty on his head. sitting opposite him thematically are 2 forces, the villains who use violence and attempt to make vash do the same, and nicholas d wolfwood, a supposedly religious man who's taken up his own form of vigilante justice. i don't want to spoil anything because trigun is like def worth watching imo but the show loves to inspect what it means to be "godly" and how different kinds of people attempt to become such, whether it be through religion, power, upright morality, etc. there's also some attempts at criticizing good old money hoarding capitalists but this is largely contained within 1 arc.
vash is like. maybe my favorite shonen mc and i am not shy about my hard biases towards trigun but trigun as a series is an incredibly engaging character study on him. plus the show is super charming, all the characters r super fun to watch be together, and the english dub is really good which is good for someone like me who struggles with subtitles bc of dyslexia lol
Like Kenshin, Vash is a pacifist. Mainly due to his upbringing, he adopted the ideology to not hurt others from his surrogate. Another big reason why he refuses to be violent is a pretty big plot point surrounding his very being @@adityannair3278

Lelouch should definitely be above Light, IMO. Light is a very interesting character and is used masterfully to explore the mind of a narcissist with a God complex. Lelouch is so fascinating though. I love seeing him grow from a vengeful monster, to calous leader of men, to a God damn monster who is secretly the only person prepared to sacrifice himself to heal the wounds he and his family have inflicted on the world for generations. Also he kind reinforces my worldview but ya know we can't truly be objective about this stuff.

I was going through this whole list the entire time thinking “Holy shit are we really not getting Edward Elric here?! I mean we’ve already got Guts this low down so I doubt he made the list” but then he showed up and I was so surprised. I love him to pieces but with the way they were ranking it, and with people like Tanjiro showing up (I like Demon Slayer but he’s not that great of a character imo) I wasn’t sure he’d actually be here
Edward is pretty generic when it comes to shonen characters there are 100 others who can fill the same spot.

Luffy and Naruto shouldn't be in that list, and if we go by not popularity then it would be a lot of obscured anime shows that will take those spots.

I think there should be a rule for top X list reviews that you have to make your own top X list before you're allowed to say any entry on the list you're reviewing is too low. It seems like these kinds of reviews always have the reviewer saying that half of the first 10 to 15 entries belong in the top 5 to 10 and it's like, bruh, these twelve things you think are top fivers can't all fit in the top five cuz there's twelve of them. No shade intended toward Garnt in particular; I feel like every list review does this.

Oh my god I can't believe Johan made it that far. I can't believe he managed to beat Goku, I got so happy after having my hopes completely destroyed by Tanjiro and (to some extent) Vegita.
I would personally give him a higher placement even, but that's my personal opinion as someone who absolutely loves villains like Johan, Griffith and Makishima, but I'm absolutely happy with that after seeing the rest of the list.

I recently watch psycho-pass and I honetsly think Makishima Shougo should be on lists like these. He is such a complex and well written character - he is the vilain but you understand his goals as if he was totaly right he uses philosophy to completely destroy the current society

The old Trigun is hit or miss for me. There’s a lot of eps I found boring, but when it’s good, it’s really good. Like, ep 18 was such amazing storytelling; it’s one of the best episodes of anime I’ve ever seen.
Try reading the manga, the old anime barely scratches the surface of how good Trigun can get.

I'm so pissed my girl Revy did not get a mention. I think part of it is that Black Lagoon doesn't get the attention that show deserved. But Revy is my bad-ass girl, and her going head to head with Roberta and they beat the crap out of one another...that his one of my chef's kiss moments in all of anime. Also, Guts for sure is a top five. I will give IGN a little credit though...One Punch Man didn't make the list, and I thought he would be there somewhere.
One punch man is unbeatable and that already makes him a bad character. It's not right even for a gag anime.

I think how iconic an anime is should NOT be considered when picking the characters. It's about the characters themselves, so animes like Astro boy DBZ, Naruto and freaking Saiilor Moon shouldn't be anywhere near this list
But the impact the character had on the medium is about the characters themselves

Seeing some of their picks, I expected a Legend of Galactic Heroes character (I'll let you decide which one) somewhere in the top 10.
Characters like Reinhard and Reuenthal are all great characters, yes. But in aspect of the best character I don't think anyone in LoGH could beat Yang Wen Li. While Reinhard drive the plot of the show, all LoGH characters (especially Reinhard) are pretty much driven by Yang.

Gon? He was pretty much one of the worst if not the worst character in HxH. Killua, Hisoka, Leorio, Meruem, Kurapika. I'd understand if it was "top 25 most iconic characters", but the best? Where's Onizuka? Probably the #1 spot for me. Where's Okarin? Where are Akagi and Kaiji? Where's Gintoki? If we're talking about iconic, where's Ranma?

Act like a restless hero, have everyone, especially Killua, clean up after him, take it out on them for taking care of what was supposed to be his responsibility. His whole character archetype pretty much fell apart when faced with things that don't magically get solved by blindly rushing into battle.
EDIT: To clarify, I understand he was intentionally bad there. So him being bad was well-written... when you're lampshading how bad a character is, and do it really well, do they count as "best" or "worst"? Which once again ties back to my original statement that they failed to define what the list is about.

@@adityannair3278 One of many - when he almost killed Morel and Killua had to stop him. Which kinda contradicts the whole "If you're on good terms with Gon, he will remain good". Or the whole quest after that arc to get Alluka to heal Gon. Sure, he defeated Pitou... but did he really need to? It didn't really accomplish anything other than his personal revenge.

I got brain damage from looking at this list. But in the same breath everyone has an opinion. Even if its not the best one, although I am happy to see Luffy and Edward being highly rated.
Given that this is an anime list and not a manga list I can understand some of these rankings. The repeats were just annoying though. But especially the Guts ranking, I can kind of see it if we're only looking at the anime. I only wish that Vash had been higher on the list. Vash and Kenshin played a big role in shaping my personality and who I wanted to be when I was watching these shows when I was younger.

To be fair, the list wasnt that bad other than order and dupes from an anime. Re-order the characters and replace the dupes with some he mentioned in the end, and the actual content would have been pretty decent.

Speaking of Shounen characters they forgot Yusuke. Arguably one of the most standout protagonists in the demographic. Also they could have added other Shoujo besides alongwith Sailor Moon. Anyway I am kind of glad they didn't Subaru and Rudeus or any Isekai character. Their story in the anime isn't finished so it would feel wrong to put them in the list now.

Even though their stories are not over they already have gone through a tremendous amount of character development. Subaru and Rudeus have yet to reach the best part of their stories. Not to say they haven't developed. But it's not enough to warrant them a spot on this list.

I think there is a way to measure iconography in anime... scientifically speaking...
like, pick a group of about 10+ people, varying in generation and media literacy/taste... (for example a gen Z and a boomer that both like anime, and a gen Z and a boomer that never saw anime in their lives) and give them a list of anime characters, and ask them to tierlist them from "I know a lot about this character" (name/occupation/powers/etc) to "I never saw this character in all my life" and some "I saw it before but can't name it" or "I know the name, but nothing else"....
then you pick up the results of each demographic, by age and literacy... and do that experiment again in other parts of the world... the end result would demonstrate how much a character is KNOWN around the world... and that's a scientific way to determine if they are ICONIC or not!
You forgot from different countries. Also, anime watchers should still be included for the sake of proper science, if don't you'll just get skewed data.
