Wow... 0:30 and 1:06. Painfully beautiful. Despair, agony, and sorrow....It sounds as if Cho narrates a tragic story on the keyboard. Such a short piece (that consists only of 13 bars) but the emotions are so deep.
no wonder it was called the "funeral" prelude, a prelude revealing sorrow. not too similar to the funeral march in the second sonata, but reminds be of a funeral.
I did not know it was called the "funeral prelude" but I can see why! The two pieces definitely have different characters, nonetheless appropriate to funerals. His funeral march makes me think of people walking towards the grave, while the prelude makes me think of people crying over the memory of their loved one.
It's a short piece, but it's harder than it looks to play, he makes it look so easy. Very dramatic and expressive performance. Currently practicing this, the chords are so big it hurts my hands T_T
The song somehow reminds me to a love story of a couple during WW2, although this song was composed way earlier than WW2 the melodies still harmonizes with WW2 footage..
Listen to what Barry Manilow did to it with “Could it be Magic”. Really gives it life. Then you listen to what Donna Summer did in her version. It’s an amazing cycle of life, power, sadness, pain and in the end extreme bliss
It was a perfect performance with a sense of grandeur. Cho's careful touch brought out the flavor of the song. Thanks to him, it was a heavy song, but I could enjoy it.

It is the velocity of the fingers and how they land on the keyboard as very solid, compact blocks - plus all the expression derived from it, but that's another thing. The "vibrato" is just a mechanical release of the type of highly controlled kinetic energy delivered by the arm and fingers. We know it is not a vibrato but a sort of "after touch". Needless to say, it has no effect on the sound produced, but it has everything to do with the action that produced the sound in the first place. It is more likely that his sound would be quite different if he didn't need to add the "vibrato" movement. It could still be a veryn tight and solid block, but perhaps more aggressive because it would land on the keyboard slightly faster. The "vibrato" is, therefore, the consequence of a complex movement.
He played all set of preludes Op 28 from 1 to 24. It's outstanding his performance. And it's very hard technically and musically playing all preludes in a row live and in a competition. Some preludes look very easy others techically very hard (the 19th for example he played before perfectly) and from the 'easiest' ones most of the work of a pianist is the interpretation. A simple mistake playing this prelude can be noticed very clearly also in dinamics not only wrong notes
