My favorite laughter explanation is the safety theory, where we laugh because we recognize we are in a better or safer position than someone else. Someone trips, we laugh because we were safe from the tripping. The tripper can laugh afterwards because they are unharmed and thus, safe. This also helps explain why the same joke can be funny in one situation and inappropriate in another, depending on how safe the hearer(s) of the joke feels

  • @dysonlu

Thanks! I was looking for something to confirm/agree with my own hypothesis about laughter (the kind triggered by a funny situation) and finally found this. Basically, the first part of a funny situation makes us endure stress due to the nature of said situation (unexpected, unpredictable, abnormal, absurd (which could be caused by insanity), etc.) that suggests danger. But then when the situation completely unfolded, we realize that it wasn't as dangerous or as harmful as we thought it was after all and that's when laughter occurs to "decompress" our body from the effect of the stress, to relief us. The whole process of stress build up and relief can happen really quickly, perhaps in split seconds; the stress may be so small and it comes and goes so quickly that we may not consciously realize it was there.

To those curious about being tickled; it doesn't directly explain it in this video but another video put together with this one does. It is theorized that being 'ticklish' is a defense mechanism used to know if a venomous spider is crawling up your leg or something of that sort.
Then in this video he says that laughing is used to ease your nerves when distressed and being tickled creates a sense of danger and distress. It's why you hate being tickled but always laugh when it happens.

We laugh (or cry), in response to stress, concern, pleasure or amusement when we are unable to articulate new intense feelings and thoughts immediately and the need to express or communicate such feelings overrides using some choice of words to do so..

Working at Wendy's years ago, some idiot put a can of generic Pam on the chicken grill... i knew it was about to explode so i ducked down and knocked it off the grill to the floor on the side away from me. It exploded with enough force to cause my ears to ring and it rocketed across the room and put a sizable dent in a stainless steel meat cooler door. I checked that everybody was ok, then... laughed my ass off. Me and everybody else laughed AFTER we could see that nobody was injured. Dont put a metal can of vegi oil on a heated surface.... it will explode like a vegi oil grenade.

Laughter is a cousin to crying. Both involve spontaneous convulsions of the lungs and neck. In both, your mouth is stretched wider and you may get tears in your eyes. Both dominate your attention, making it difficult to continue what you're doing. If you laugh or cry along with someone, you usually feel quite a bond with them. If you laugh or cry alone, you may really miss having someone to share your feelings with and you may feel a strong urge to share your feelings with someone. We love to see movies that make us laugh or cry along with the audience.

I am known for laughing outrageously when I am hurt. I once had a small sailboat ram my leg and my thigh instantly bruised from knee to hip (it wasn't broken). I could barely breathe because I was laughing so hard! (And yes, it hurt like hell!)
Another time, I was having my wisdom teeth pulled and started laughing uncontrollably. That got the dentist giggling and soon the whole office was poking their heads in the room to see why. Everyone thought I was nuts, but the dentist said it was so much better than crying!

+Magalí Iglesias Barenys The human mind is so very interesting! What you asked is a marvelous question. Simple answer is ; no, don't feel left out! Most people find it surprising to see a human be so silly to think that a banana is a phone. It appeared strange to you and it made you giggle. I have been wondering though, do we CHOOSE to laugh? Can you be 'blamed' for laughing? After deep thought about this seemingly understood idea, It became clear to me that that life is much more complex than i had ever thought. Everything we do, no matter what, is based entirely off of outside sources. You think you want a cookie, but that's only because the combination of substances in the cookies cause our taste buds to be affected and our brain decides if a flavor is "good". So you have a favorite taste, sound, site, smell or feel. But you only like them because of the way they were presented/cooked/ reacted with your taste buds in a tasty manor. The beheadings going on between our own fellow humans. We can not blame them for being taught that information. Can you blame anyone for being alive and reacting to life? This is not a justification for moral ignorance, it is an acceptance of all levels of life weather you understand them or not. So, no, you were not the only one that laughed Magali. :) We all laugh, the question is, do we choose to and why?

I don't believe it's only for defensive reason (while some does). In nature, it is very unlikely to get the pressure and gentle touch of a tickle, mostly in survival nature, there are only brute physical pressure to cut, damage the body. Advanced social creatures will have developed social touch and feelings to ensure they are not aggressive but a friendly relation. Especially between males and females, it might have some sexual interactions.

It's a reaction from the body telling us those area's are to be protected. Almost everywhere that's ticklish is where a vital artery/vein or tendon is, if you were attacked and hit in these areas, you would most likely die. These areas include: under the arms, which have arteries carrying blood to/from the heart, the inner rim of your hips (the area heading up to your you-know-what) which also has a set of arteries, the knee, where a tendon (which heads up towards the spine) is located, etc..

I wouldn't be surprised, I mean there have been a lot of studies about how making yourself smile can release the same happy brain juices as a natural smile. Plus I hear a lot of folks do forced laughing as a stress reliever.

It is because we are often sensitive to tickling on areas of our body that are sensitive or vulnerable for attacks. And since you didn't die when you got surprised by the fingers moving rapidly on your sensitive parts you start feeling relieved. There you have it. Both the surprised and relieved part he explained.

I have always seen laughing as a instinctive way that we draw attention to mistakes so that others in a group are more aware of hazards.
eg: a group of hunter gatherers traversing a forest in search of food and one trips on a root, say one of the others sees this and laughs, now everyone sees and knows to look out for tripping hazards. Which in a hunt may mean the difference to success and failure.
This could also be why we laugh more in larger groups to ensure everyone is informed.

Hank, you may read this or you may not, but if you do; I'll be very pleased to know you have. Anyway, I do as-level psychology, it's pretty difficult I'll admit, but some of your videos have give me knowledge that I have remembered about certain things e.g. rem sleep, and I can't thank you enough for making interesting, funny and very educational videos. I am a big fan, thank you very much. These videos should be used as learning resources for older students at schools/ colleges!

My guess is yeah, trees could grow in space, provided the roots of the tree are able to absorb water and minerals, so they would probably have to be planted in some kind of clay instead of loose soil that might disperse in the air.
Due to what's called "Phototrophism" a plant will always grow in the direction of where light is coming from, so if the lighting stays consistent, the tree should look much like on earth.
I'm sure the ISS did many experiments involving plants you can google.

I was born with cerebral palsy and walk with crutches/use a wheelchair. Some time in my early life, I developed a laugh reflex every time I fall in public. I think part of it is imagining what I look like from "outside," (think Buster Keaton movies). But mostly, I think it's a way for me to announce that I am unhurt, so that people will not be afraid to come help me back up, instead of running for a doctor, or calling 911. Would be easier if I weren't laughing so hard..

You should make a show about corn. Where it comes from & how it's broken up into different things. Like how they put some things from corn in batteries. Or how & why some form of corn is in most products at a supermarket
