I don't know if it's because I played the ps4 version (where the character doesn't get into auto pilot mode in the Murphy levels), but I found the challenge competent and fair, not even close to the easiness of a Kirby game. Also, outside the main game, the invaded levels are VERY challenging, and a lot of fun.

    • @PumpkinSwag

PlatformerKid Yeah, I thought the challenge was more on the moderate side, slowly getting harder. I didn’t die as much as in Origins, but I didn’t find Legends so easy as to bore me. I played Xbox 360, by the way.

@@cancan8906 Believe me, when you try to get all 3 Teensies (yes, even the jester) on Quick Sand Invaded, come back to me when you need a therapist. 8-Bit Gloo Gloo made me cry of rage when I died very close to the end just because of one of the bomb's fireballs hitting me just because I jumped too high. The Dark Rayman levels were fucking painful, especially the first Olympus Maximus Invaded. 8-Bit Grannies World Tour is really trippy, and you really need to follow the beat to finish it after all the visual effects and distortions

Up there with Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze as one of the best platformers of the decade. Also I'm not certain that the game was as easy as the video makes it out to be. The time trials and dark rayman stages gave me a lot of difficulty, even if the game as a whole isn't very difficult.

Rayman fan The difficulty may be easier than Origins, but you can't deny that they didn't do it right. I in fact just got two of my cousins into playing the game and they really liked it!

    • @raymanfan9265
      @raymanfan9265 6 років тому +9

Aleksi Taunimaa not really, the second and third world are as easy as the first one. The most difficult world had medium difficult. Origins had 6 worlds and a last level that tested your skills. Legends has 5 worlds and the "sixth" world only has musical levels that we already played with not a lot of changes. Legends really needed another world with bigger difficult and a last awesome level with extreme difficult. Legends ending was even more anticlimatic than origins, with the delaying i thought they will fix origins mistakes, but sadly no. Instead of remaking origins, they should had made a new world plus a better ending.

Rayman fan Eh, I prefer my games to be on the easier side, I found plenty of frustration and satisfaction in those invasion levels, but even if it is satisfying to beat a hard level, it doesn't compare to how much I wanted to destroy my Switch whenever I kept dying in a stage. Also, kind of suprised there was no single mention of any level from Living Dead Party, the 8-Bit levels were a very creative idea and the game should get merit for that.

I disagree with your commentary about the difficulty. Sure, if you are only aiming for completing the game in terms of going through the levels, then you will not have a very hard time. However, if you want to make a perfect run for each level, you will be putting in those hours to do so. I had to put in a couple of hours just to perfect a single level a couple of times because of how much precision was needed to grab everything. The game is a master class in level design on how to make accessible levels while giving people who want to master the game the opportunity to get rewarded for perfectly timed platforming to grab every collectible.
That is also the game's greatest strength. It encourages you to become a better player through smart placement of items to encourage better platforming, while allowing less experienced players to learn the game at their own pace without having to hit a brick wall from massive difficulty spikes. The game can be easy or hard depending on what goals you set for yourself and that to me is a sign of a great platformer.
Also, the issue with bringing up the difficulty from something like Rayman 1 is that that game is unreasonably difficult. It may be a fun game, but it has some pretty ridiculous difficulty spikes that would be considered bad game design by today's standards. Makes it hard to recommend to more than the most hardcore platformer fans unlike similar games from the 90's like the Donkey Kong Country series that have aged remarkably well.

Origins is still my favorite of the two. Even if it is more accessible, I found origins much more compelling. Origins never wanted you to stop moving, and the level design complemented that. The fact that you had to masterfully collect as many lums as you could to complete each world, and the king lum being there to reward skillful gameplay, was much more entertaining than the purple lums, and the fact that I would often 100% a world with little effort.

The cartwheel attack was in Origins
So when you are in the air, hold down on the L Stick and your character would do a dive. You can cancel it by just attacking or you stop holding it down. So when you land on the ground while diving, you would just do a landing roll. Throughout the time you touched the ground and when you are in the roll/slide, you can just press the attack button and he does this funky attack and you can cancel it with a jump so what basically saying is that every move can be cancelled except the diving crush attack that creates a shockwave.

I didn't want to have to wait that long to play the game. LOL! I had so much fun with this game and from my experience I think it probably was the best side-scroller ever made

Just started playing this on PS4 and I’ve been having a lot of fun with it. It’s available for free on PS Plus and I didn’t want to pass the opportunity to get it, good thing I didn’t.
There are a few differences between the PS4 and Wii U versions; levels utilizing the touchscreen for Murphy in the Wii U version have his actions performed with the circle button on PS4, and you remain in control of your currently selected character rather than guiding a CPU-controlled Globox. Rotating platforms is done by holding the L1 and R1 buttons instead of tilting the controller. Additionally, both the PS4 and Xbox One version’s have non-existent loading times when entering levels due to their larger storage medium and superior hardware to the Wii U, and all art assets are uncompressed. On PS4, the touchpad is used to scratch off lucky tickets and the sounds goes through the controller’s speaker.
Awesome review, as usual. I have a couple of ideas for future reviews; some are “How Bad is Without Warning?” “Is Full Auto underrated?” “Is Pac-Man World still good?” When I asked if you took donations I wanted to donate Without Warning to you; thankfully the game is really cheap on Ebay, to the point where you can find a brand new copy of the Xbox version for less than $10. Just a thought.

i finally beat this game.. this game is phenomenal to me.. i would say this is better than origins.. it improved a lot.. i would characterize it as having a rewarding level of difficulty.. in this review it was mentioned that rayman got hearts on the wii u game screen and also during loading.. neither of those things exist on ps4.. but anyway yeah this game is amazing.. i got it 2 or 3 yrs ago and never got into it, but recently my internet kept going out and each time it did- this was my go to.... i liked this more than origins... the game is very long.. has a ton of stuff in it.. a ton of variety, great graphics and sound.. i also appreciated not having to hear that chipmunk mariachi song 10,000 times like in origins.. also there is a ton of situational animation in this game and it made the game feel alive.. i actually lol'ed at some it.. the level design in this game is incredible and i feel that is the star of the show.. i think i would give it a 10.. i can't do a 9.5 because the inclusion of the origins levels (except this time w/o the loading) was very generous imo... the type of extra that merits a 10.. i hadn't played origins in years so it was nice going back

While I love Legends, Origins has much more legitimate story content. The majority of play time in that game was from more actual stages, which threaded together an actually existing story with a real finale. When I beat Legends, I was SHOCKED that the game just ended like that. WHAT? Maybe they could've had the song the aliens were playing on the Dark Teensies wake up a beast which the gang would have to stop. ANYTHING.
Also, Origins has that Land of the Dead theme, which is insane, and better level themes and concepts.
Not to diss Legends entirely- the presentation blows Origins out of the water, and 20,000 Lums is my favorite world in any platformer, with Mansion of the Deep being one of my favorite levels in any 2D game. Fight me.

This is why Rayman is a Legend and why he deserves to be popular than Mario, Sonic, etc.😃😃
Rayman and Barbara will always be my favorite characters in this 2.5D platformer. Even though I own a Nintendo Switch, I already own Rayman Legends on the Wii U and I know that the Definitive Edition is out there. I hope we get Rayman IV or a 3D sequel to Rayman Legends with the new characters from Rayman Legends like Barbara and her other princess friends and I want male versions of the Rayman Legends Princesses to be introduced too😉😉

think the graphics were better in origins.. i couldn't put my finger on it but over time i realized the reason is because legends oftentimes has a color palette.. like a green level is mostly green, an orange level is mostly orange, etc... while origins had more of a "pop" because there was more of a contrast in colors.. one way for me to put it is while origins looks like a painting, legends kinda looks like smudged painting

I have played countless 2D and 2.5D platform games over the past 33 years. You could even say I am an enthusiast of the genre. All of those games have had variable levels of fun factor, challenge, overall polish and many other factors. Rayman Legends IS one of the finest video games ever made, let alone one of the greatest 2D/2.5D Platformers ever made. It ticks every box in my view, for what a game should provide for the player. I love when you can feel the care and pure polish put into a game. This ensures a complete experience for the player. And honestly, the tipping point for any video game is how much bloody fun it is to play. The level of challenge, or lack there of, does not sour this game. Along with Origins, Shovel Knight and perhaps a select few others, Legends IS Legendary within this decade of games. Games like this magnify what made the 8 and 16 bit 2D Platformers of our youth so memorable.

I feel that missed on this one. Rayman Legends shines in the subtleties of speedrunning, once you start to control rayman in that way you realize how carefully crafted the levels really are, for example there is an entire range of movement mechanics I never saw you use once in your review. I think the developers made a game that was easy enough to appeal to casual players and younger audiences, the game you played, as well as a game for veterans who will really explore how a character moves and interacts with the environment. And while it may be fair criticism that the casual experience doesn't get hard enough before the credits I think the developers do a lot to open up this second half of the game to you by introducing timed modes and especially daily challenges where you quickly realize that you haven't been playing the same game. The whole game has been building an emphasis on speed and flow and its up to you to challenge yourself.

For me it was really the open layout of what level to play that really made the difficulty just all over the place. Instead of Origins' tight progression of levels and then the expanded worlds after you get halfway through, Legends letting you pick whatever means the difficulty curve isn't a curve so much as it is a scribble.

Okay. I played this game a while ago and I know this video's pretty old as well, but after watching it, can we talk about how both this game and the prequel basically perfected a modern Sonic game? At least in my eyes it did. Just the flow and momentum structure of these games are what I feel modern Sonic games are kind of missing, whether 2D or 3D. There's wall-running and wall-jumping in this game that isn't just more or less an automated event or just press X/Square to win. Every obstacle flows into one another and allows for newcomers to plan out routes effectively in safe zones, while experienced players can blast through without ever letting go of the run button while pulling off precise and well-timed moves. I think this type of game-style is what a modern sonic game desperately NEEDS right now, and this game did in freakin' 2013. It's a game-style that doesn't rest on the laurels of Sonic's 2D glory days too much, constantly pandering to people who just refuse to let that type of Sonic go thus stifling any sort of innovation, but also doesn't sacrifice smooth, momentum based platforming for pure speed and level memorization like the modern 3D games. And the difficulty is just perfect. It's the endgame is where it's at. I did everything in this game because it was so rewarding and challenged me to perfect the momentum style through a level. Sonic Mania is cool, but if you ask me, this game is where modern 2D Sonic games should be at by this point.

Not hating or anything, but just wanted to point out that you forgot to talk about the movement system. You dont just run and jump like a simple platformer, you can do rolls, roll jumps and boost breaks. These mechanics explain why the first few paintings are easier than the others, is designed to let you play around with the movement.

  • @live22morrow
    @live22morrow 6 років тому +1

I agree with others that the invasion levels make up a lot for the main campaigns lack of difficulty. Especially the dark rayman levels. That being said, I'd still say that it's easier overall than Origins. I even noticed that in the Origins stages remade for Legends, many of the harder ones had some obstacles removed to make them easier.
I'd also vouch for the non Wii U Murphy levels as well. While you don't have quite the same puzzle element present in the auto controlled version, it's replaced with an enjoyable type of gameplay where you have to multitask by doing the normal platorming action, while at the same time focusing on controlling the new mechanic that each of these levels brings. It's a great way to do unique gameplay scenarios without totally changing the controls. The last chase level in Olympus in particular is an amazing example. You have to handle doing precision platforming and wall jumping all the while controlling Murphy to get obstacles and platforms into the right place. It's an amazing sense of flow.

I've noticed younger audiences at work seem to struggle with this game more than Rayman Origins. On the PS4/XB1 version of Rayman Legends, players have full control over their character at all times, including the Murphy sections. While Murphy is simplified to a context button press (PS4: Circle / XB1: B vs. Wii U Gamepad touchscreen), inexperienced players struggle to juggle both Murphy and platforming at the same time. I don't think these sections were developed with easy platforming in mind either due to the computer originally controlling the player's character in these sections of the Wii U version.
One last side note: While players can jump in at any time for a co-op experience for all versions, there doesn't appear to be a way for players to actually drop out on the PS4 version. While the select button works fine on the XB1 version, the trackpad on the PS4 acts as a rather useless camera "zoom in/out". I think this is an oversight due to the lack of a "Select" button on the PS4 controller.

Difficulty is an odd topic in the world of game development. On one hand, games like Cuphead are loved and praised for their difficulty and rewarding moments, but others will feel ripped off when 90% of a game's content is locked behind difficulty. Great video! I have this for the Wii U and found it super cheap for the PS4 and have both. I see now I wish I played the Wii U one first. The PS4 one doesn't use any touch screen on the Murphy levels. You press the "O" button to make him switch things on/off and in the cake part, me moves and you have to time hitting the button as he flies in a circle. This game is worth playing again though.
Yeah, almost forgot about that chicken part as it seemed rather early in the game. The music parts really brought a smile to my face that was hard to turn off for a while. Especially "Gloo Gloo" when I it became evident what it was a spoof of.
The levels were a lot easier and the hidden guys were always hidden in the same way.
Trophies on the PS4 are a nice, but to Platinum it, you have to compete online to up Awesomeness rank. Unfortunately it rewards the top 2% or so of skilled players the ability to do this in a minimum of 20 days or so, others 30days - 2,000 of grinding. NOT so Awesome....

I'm surprised, I thought you were gonna end up liking Legends more than Origins. Glad you still enjoyed it though!
I played it on the Xbox One, not the Wii U, so seeing the difference in Murphy's gameplay was pretty interesting. On other consoles, Murphy will show up sometime during the level. You'll play as the same character you were using before (Sir Globrax - the character that shows up in the Murphy sections on Wii U - shows up in other versions as one of the unlockable characters), but Murphy will fly to the nearest object you can interact with, and you have to press a certain button (B on Xbox One) to get him to interact with the object. I can't say for sure whether or not that makes Murphy gameplay better than on the Wii U version, but thought it was worth mentioning.
I think Legends would still be my favorite Rayman game, though Origins is fantastic, too, and I can understand why you like it better. I even have a soft spot for the first game (though I never owned the PS1 version; I owned the GBA version, which was made to be easier, and the mobile version, which has a mode with unlimited lives). I can't wait to play the 3D games.
