  • We are doing ABA therapy at home for our daughter with autism. Unfortunately Braylee is currently not in Therapy because of the stay at home orders. Good thing is, we have went through a lot of parent training so we are able to do some of her programming at home. #autism #weefam #stayathome

    Braylee dramatically slapping down the cards makes me think of a magician slapping down a playing card and saying, "Is this your card!?!" 😂

    You can put the card back through the laminator and it will flatten the folds. Just a helpful tip. Someone told me that years ago and it has saved me so much time in my prep.

      It’s one of her strong suits! Puzzles, colors, and sorting/matching. That type of stuff is right up her alley. She’s also pretty close to mastering or has already mastered some so they’re things she’s worked on, it wasn’t new stuff 🙂

    I absolutely love B's technique, girlfriend is going to have a strong throwing arm and improved accuracy too. It could definitely carry over to her adaptive baseball and is another discrete way to work on hand-eye coordination.
    You guys are doing a great job, Braylee is going to do so much learning and growing while we wait for normal life to resume. Some days it may feel like you've hit the pause button with progress and academics but regardless of how challenging things are, miss B is soaking up so much more than we would probably guess. I feel like one of these days she's going to bust out a completely new skill that she's been secretly working on, and blow all expectations out of the water. Unexpected breakthroughs are almost as awesome as hard-won challenges.

    • @TheWeeFamily
      @TheWeeFamily  4 роки тому +3

      She definitely likes to “wind up” 😂 her hand eye coordination definitely is not the best, motor planning/coordination struggles and all.
      I agree with you, she has been such a sponge for skills and language and is still really maintaining a lot of it which is good. I also agree with her secretly working on a skill that we will see sometime. She does that to us a lot it seems like 😉 sneaky smart kid

    Look at those sorting/ category skills ! There has to be a production company that specializes in training videos with in our field! Be it state or even nation wide for aba or direct care , a company could use videos like these to make continuation or even entry level hire education material! Such a potential as a overall learning resource!

    • @TheWeeFamily
      @TheWeeFamily  4 роки тому

      I agree. I know some places are offering telehealth (like her music therapy) but I’d hate to be running it through insurance when there’s a very high chance that she would not be interested. Being at home and having the option to more easily leave the area and watching on a screen is just so different for her. If there were videos more accessible for families to help with how to do the therapy/schooling it would be great. I feel like I’ve heard many families with special needs kids struggling with those things. I’m thankful that we have been given materials and direction of what to work with her on. I know that not everyone has that during this time.

    question: what is aba therapy?, the channel "being Dusty mae" also makes reference to this term,but doesn't explain what it is, or does for people on the asd spectrum.

    • @TheWeeFamily
      @TheWeeFamily  4 роки тому +3

      ABA is applied behavior analysis and is a type of therapy commonly used for Autism. It is used to learn social skills, language, life skills, work on challenging behavior (as necessary) and a large variety of things. It assesses functions behind the behaviors and reinforces appropriate behaviors. So for Braylee in this situation, giving the correct answers and getting verbal praise is a reinforcer. When she’s newly learning skills she gets a preferred reinforcer after every correct response. If she needs, she is always allowed to request a break. ABA is very reliant on data so they track progress that way. They use many positive reinforcers for Braylee. In our experience, it’s the therapy type that she has made the most progress with. Each person has different goals and things that they are working on so it’s personalized but can really be used to work on a large variety of things.
      I understand it but am honestly not very good at explaining.

    Stacey saying that prior to ABA you guys didn't know how it would work to teach a child with little to no receptive language what words were..like she recognized shoes when she saw them but couldn't associate the word 'shoe' with the shoes she actually owned, right? I find that confusing but fascinating. I assume Stacey raised that point in this context because this sorting task somehow assisted with braylee learning to associate words with the objects she was familiar with - but I still don't get how this sorting task helped that to happen? Could you explain in a future video how that connection happened?

    • @TheWeeFamily
      @TheWeeFamily  4 роки тому +1

      She had a big receptive language delay when she was younger. I guess it’s similar to teaching toddlers about speech and how to learn words. She seemed to understand very well what purpose objects had but when we asked her even to show us “shoes” it seemed as if she had no idea what we were talking about. It was a disconnect of language. It could also have been part of her inability to follow one step directions at the time too. She’s a very visual learner. In the beginning they used cards in sets of 2-3 and would ask her to touch a certain card by name of the object. They would use hand over hand and point to the button of what the correct response was on her talker. They continued this and then she moved to doing it herself and she started to connect words to objects. As she’s gotten better about it, the learning process has been streamlined and easier and they just keep introducing new cards with new objects to learn. Hope this made sense.
