  • I loved that today was 2/22/22 and thought it was a cool day to do a Basement DeClutter Video!! Give a little motivation for 2022!! I normally don’t record Basement Videos in winter because it’s so cold down here!! That’s when I focus back on the upstairs! But I figured doing a basement video once a month until it warms up is a good idea, gives us a little head start before we’re in here weekly again!!

You still have enough of your OWN stuff to declutter and put on the "giving page" without you taking the things other people want to get out of their homes! I hope you find the strength and courage to just tell people that the shelters are not accepting things right now so they can take their own things to Goodwill and you don't have to deal with posting it on top of your own things!

Looks wonderful! For some reason I was thinking you need to declutter your time, do not let people bring you stuff you are not actively collecting for, they can call the shelters and see what is needed. Your time and energy is worth a lot and my giving yourself more of that energy you will get your craft area going sooner.

I think it is awesome that you do so much charity work, and that you act as a go-between to encourage/foster that, but perhaps it would be better to direct people to drop things off directly to the source? Things being directed to you is clearly adding more stuff for you to sort through, which you clearly don't need. At the very least, maybe refuse donations/charity drop-offs until you have a handle on what you already have?

    Ms. Heart,
I think you have such a big heart! I hear you say that you couldn’t turn things down because you didn’t want to hurt their feelings. That is admirable, and I think you could do it in a way that protected you from more stuff and errands or tasks added to your plate. Please know this comes as a protection for you and meant to be helpful. If it is not, please just know that you are amazing and kind hearted. I wonder if you could say something like thank you very much but I am learning that my adhd puts things off and right now I have to say no to any gifts or donations, but you could post them on your town giving page (said to person wanting to give to you). Just a thought.

Oh thank you so much for thinking of x charity but unfortunately they are not collecting y at the moment. Pause and let them reply. They may say they'll donate it elsewhere. If they seem hurt or not knowing where else to take them, you could offer to take them to a thrift shop. But they stay in ur car till u drop them off. Like decluttering, these muscles will get stronger

You’re doing such an amazing job decluttering! I’m really struck by how much people around you are making things harder to maintain. A huge amount of what you decluttered today were items that other people dropped off with you. It upsets me that they are not helping you with this journey! You have worked so hard at your budgeting, no-buy days, and other projects to reduce what is coming in. I feel like it’s time for people to stop asking you to deal with their stuff! They should take it to the shelter themselves or donate it or sell it!

Just wow! The look of the basement compared to what it was like a year ago! My mom always said, when us kids were overwhelmed by a task: “How can you eat an elephant?”, having us answer “in small bites” And you may be decluttering in small bites at a time, but you are way on your way at eating that elephant 🐘. Great job!

Continued great progress. To keep all the extra work of dropping or posting items that people give to you-I think you need to kindly ask for people to no longer drop to you. With work family etc you are taking on too much-let people do their own donation drop offs-you can’t take on everything yourself. Think of yourself first and the donations people drop are just prolonging the time it will take to get to your end goal. Also, you have great holiday decorations, but your house would be so much more organized if you put a limit on the number of totes for each holiday-maybe 2 for Easter 2 fall Halloween. And 6 max for Christmas. I recently downsized all my decorations and it feels so much better-just keep the special items and what you truly love. Stay out of the dollar store-we all end up buying a bunch of stuff there that we just do not need. Keep up the great work!

You are doing great! In the spirit of "adressing the behaviours", I think you have already identified some of your behaviours so well in this video: You don't want to be disappointing fellow kind hearted people and you take on their stuff. I would encourage you to practice self-care and address these behaviours as well. You could come up with a few sentences you practice beforehand, like: "Thank you so much for thinking of these charities. However, they are only accepting toiletries at this time. Will you think of me when you have any toiletries?"
Or even: "I am struggling to keep up with collecting and distributing all of these different items at this time. Would you be so kind and deliver them yourself? They will be very welcome!" - whenever that is the case.
It could also be an honest: "I love you very much, but I can't take these on right now."
This doesn't mean disappointing them. You are taking responsibility for your mental health and your own boundaries. Your ADHD makes it harder for you than other people to keep on top of this. So be careful how much you wanna put on in this specific area!
All the best to you :)

  • @nancykaplan7163
    @nancykaplan7163 2 роки тому +5

you really need to ask kind people to deliver donations directly, themselves.
Aah yes, the finishing or last two steps issue., and i dont have ADHD.
Serious improvement. i remember when you did not have like with like and decorations everywhere. YEs, someday you will enjoy thinning out the seasonal deco Corralling everything . like with like --very good start.

In the past, when you found a bin with baby clothes, I felt a lot of sorrow through your words and feelings. This time, I felt more calm and for the first time I could picture the clothes as sentimental objects. I saw the hats on your little boys, thought of them being so cute and tiny and it was so good to get a happy and calm feeling by going through the clothes. It felt like looking at pictures of someone I love. You are in very beautiful path of healing, thank you for sharing it with us. May God keep giving you the strength to walk through it.

As a mother of children in your age bracket, the best advice I can give you, is learn to say “No!” Stop trying to please other people and please yourself and your family first! If someone asks you to donate something, anything. Are you going there right now? Do you know the charity will take those items? If not say “No!” Your house and space isn’t a drop off site or storage space for others! You’re trying to have less things in your house, don’t let people take advantage of you being nice! Your time, efforts and space belong only to you and your family. You owe nothing to anyone else!

Hi.. you are doing a perfect job ... I have a little suggestion for that space put like 2 bins for the part that someone is dropping things and go thru them when they fill up and one more bin for some misplaced stuff and do the same to contain and don't overwhelm the space that you have already declutter but you are dropping some stuff when you are in a rush

I was once told that a gift has fulfilled its purpose once it has given joy to the gifter and the recipient. The actual item is secondary to the joy of giving and being given to.
That doesn’t always make it easier for me to let go when I’m ready to move on from something I was generously given, but sometimes it does really help me.

Also, thank goodness for generous hearts like yours! I put out a request this week for some secondhand 2T clothes since my kiddo just had a growth spurt and a few other mamas were so generous with hand me downs, it gave me the warm fuzzies and I love seeing my little one in her gifted clothes.

Love your videos! Great motivation you have. I want to continue seeing you de cluttering your basement. Maybe take a space heater with you for you can stay longer there. Before a holiday go through your holiday bin and only keep the items you want that way you can give away or sell the items easily because it’s not past the holiday.

I know what it's like to perform a task in a room that's a bit uncomfortable... My home gym is in the garage and it gets super cold too in the winter and hot in the Summer, but in a weird way, I like it. It reinforces that working out isn't supposed to be comfortable and from my knowledge of hoarding, letting things go and decluttering isn't comfortable either... but you're doing it. You are literally flexing your decluttering muscles! You go girl!! How exciting is the possibility of doubling you're living space?!?! When we cleaned out our hoarded garage to make room for the gym, I finally got the room I needed in my house for a formal dining room. It's one of our favorite rooms in the house now!

I’m an artist/crafter and I so relate to the discovery of 5 of the same item when you declutter/reorganize. It’s funny-sad when it looks like a “history of the product” display when you put them all side-by-side. My basement has been my storage (clutter) room for all my art and craft supplies.
I’ve started sorting related items into bins and labeling them by theme/craft. And getting rid of cardboard boxes. They were my vice because they are free… but their opacity and lack of labels made things awful when trying to find one specific Amazon box amongst a stack. It’s so satisfying when you can see more floor/table/counter space at the end of a session than when you started.
When hubby sees me craft/art supply shopping on my phone or computer while getting ready to make something for a birthday/holiday gift, he motivates me to use some of my stash by calling it “shopping downstairs” when I’m looking for a long-lost art or craft supply, before I buy yet another to add to the storage. Because chances are, I already have something that will work just as well as what I’ve been browsing for. Or he’ll joke around saying “I heard there was a sale on x y z downstairs. You should check there first” lol.
Lately, if I can get up early enough, I’m trying to dedicate 30 minutes (with a timer) per day to sorting/organizing/tidying my supplies as fast as I can. Even if it’s just getting all of the paint bottles and brushes back into their boxes, from the bag or cardboard box I “temporarily” had them in. Even if the only difference at the end is an empty bag I can fold and put away, or cardboard box I can toss into the recycling, it’s still a nice feeling.
I one day hope to have a nice crafting/art area in my basement as well. Keep up the good work for yourself and the gift of motivation you give to us all. ❤️

I really needed to hear those things about emotional readiness… I’ve been struggling more than I’ve realised with decluttering momentum has really dropped since family members died at the end of last year. I now can’t let go of some things I was almost ready to let go of… but being surrounded by unfinished projects hurts, too.
It’s overwhelming, but if I’m not ready to let go of some things, I can still try to keep pressing forwards with things I’m less attached to. I’m used to quicker progress, and used to dealing with grief alongside decluttering already…
Old wounds have opened up… but on a very big plus side: I haven’t regretted the things I did get rid of even now I’m putting a stronghold on the smaller amount of sentimental items I now own. :) There isn’t much I’d rather I’d kept, and I’ve got rid of a lot these last couple of years :)
Thanks for the reminder that this pace is ok, and there’s easier progress to be made in the meantime.
Finishing tasks is my sticking point at the best of times. Definitely time to list some things online :)

I love saving the bags but I make myself use them or give them to someone else who will use.

You did amazing! Quick decisions. You are verry focused and it seems that putting things away (halloween stuff) in an other place does not distract you from the actual task.

Well I'm glad you had a good day today. I packed all my winter/valentine's decor away yesterday and put up the st. pat's. We had a snow storm today so I got stuck trying to get in the garage and shattered my passenger mirror so another thing to fix. It is not working on days like these.

You have done a great job again, the basement looks so much better already! I am really impressed by your consistency! I am not there yet.
Pepper seems to supervise and kind of police if things start to pile up again, this is so cute. 😻

Love seeing Pepper who is curious and wants to be there with you. You have come a long way in your decluttering...waiting to see your craft area. Also looking forward to seeing future episodes on decluttering the attic .
