We literally just had a discussion on “team legacy” and how it supposedly doesn’t matter to most players when they’re in negotiations. If someone like Juan Soto didn’t care about the legacy of a team like the Yankees, then why should Pete Alonso care about the legacy of a team like the Mets? It can’t be both ways. Either legacy and loyalty matters or it doesn’t.
Soto was not an actual Yankee , he was a National, who traded him bc they knew they were too fsr apart in negotiations. Soto is also a generational talent. If Soto spent his first 6 years with the Yanks , he'd probably still be a Yank

Yet they’re unwilling to pay someone who has been their guy. It’s cognitive dissonance. If he was really “their guy” and they want him to stay and the owner is so willing to spend like they say he is, then it shouldn’t be a problem for them to pay him, even if it is an overpay.

Jose Reyes is not forgotten. He won a batting title and was one of the best short stops the Mets ever had. He also came back at the end of his career.
