I think you literally just have to relax. Hold your hand up in the air, allow your fingers to fall, your wrist to bend, feel the weight of your entire hand. It should feel still and heavy, dead. Practice keeping that same feeling with the mallets in your hands. The mallets should feel like an extension of your the still heavy fingers.

Can you guys make a pdf or something of the exercise from the beginning? I'd like to work on that with a high school percussion group to get them thinking about all the mechanics before we get our music

Hi i'm a mallet player in high school and i've been working on runs with my inside mallets but i feel like i'm pushing down with my thumbs. I feel like i'm rotating my wrist, but i guess i'm not relaxed and i'm squeezing with my thumbs. is there any excersize or any tips you could give me to help my relax my hands more?

Hi Dice, yes that's a good concern. I think it would do just as well to practice on a bed or something soft.

I have a set a rubber mallets that I use for this. You can always try that or a set that you don’t care about.

Good vid! Very informative. :) As an idea, can you perhaps make a video about those narly 11ths you do in etude in Aminor no. 1? Well, large intervals in general I suppose(octaves and above). Alot of people I know have trouble with the big and super big intervals with Stevens grip and end up hurting themselves. I remedy the problem by suggesting "MOM" but a visual from a master on the UA-cams would be spiffy I thought.
