      Well by golly Roger, I'm glad you like the old splitter. It's built 90% or more with recycled materials. The control valve was bought new as well as the lovejoy coupling. All the rest is used farm and industrial machinery parts and construction waste.

Kinda like topping off the oil in your tractor.....LOL. Thanks for the compliment on the old machine. It has been a good one, but there needs to be some maintenance in the near future !!

    Morning T! Well, there is no fooling around over at your log pile. LOL. Man, you have a great process going - love the way you partially split them and then they fall apart afterwards on the final throw. Nice! Great working machine back there. Thanks for showing us the beauty of yester-year. Cheers my friend - have a good weekend!

      Thanks Gp...but the very first half of the first round only busted in two, so that one totalled only 5 pieces. It was just strings holding it though.... but I had to come clean and admit to it in the video. A lot of times, I'll make two partial splits each way kinda like a ''blooming onion" served in a restaurant. Pick up the whole round and throw it on the pile and it will literally explode into nine pieces just like that. Minimizes the handling big time. Of course, a lazy guy always finds the easiest way to do it !! I was really glad to have been invited to join the group.

      Thank you Dan, I appreciate the compliment sir. Back in the late 70's it was common for us to start in the wood pile and work non-stop for 7 to 8 hours every weekend throughout the winter. It is a bit labor intensive though and you can really work up a sweat if you let it. I'd be afraid to put a number to the cord that's gone through this machine in 40 years. Nothing compared to a commercial supplier though. The largest we split measured 54'' in diameter by lowering the beam to the ground and rolling them up with a cant hook.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  4 роки тому

      Hahahaha...good comment sir. We use different techniques with different types of wood. This works best with wood that's been cut for a couple years. Fresh cut green wood holds together a bit better and requires a longer extension of the push block....taking more time per piece of wood. Green American Elm is one of the worst, but increase the rpm of the pto to increase ram speed and it still results in about the same amount of wood processed. I hope it works well for you, but notice also the height of the wedge and push block. That's a key portion of the technique. Larger pieces, like 18'', 20'' and above take an entirely different technique that requires a little more labor, but works well. Thank you so much for watching and especially for the comment sir.

      Tractorman44 Indeed Tractorman44, Wooly would be the man to have at the bar. If he can hold out for that long swinging that pretty maul, he's the man alright. I was splitting wood today and the pile of maple will probably go in the woods to decompose. My friend who gave it to me was a big dead silver maple that was half punky as it was. Under my tarp it got worse. Half of it is okay for the shop but you have to feed the stove often but hey, it makes heat. I also found some ant nests, a termite nest, which I carefully took out in the woods saying I'm sorry on the way and that my house tastes awful. Then those huge beetles that borrow into the wood and make tunnels. I hate messing up their homes. I split about half of it and will pile up the rest for bug houses in the woods. Did split some green oak, green from last fall. It was a beautiful day until about 4 and it got cloudy again. Seems we've had very few full days of sunshine. But good enough to get stuff done. So even at 3am, fell asleep in my easy chair for a Goos while. Then I realized there was some JO in the pot so I had to toast you this early morning and all the boys in the splitter wars. It was a very good example. Kind of glad I didn't see it before I bought mine cuz I'd be confused no end! But building one I think would be the most fun! So Thanks Again for a very fun and informative event! I certainly wasn't disappointed and I did subscribe to all the channels. Blessings and JO! DaveyJO

    Wendell nice job. I can appreciate the thought that your brothers put nto this machine. My family on my dads side is just the same. You should see the home built firewood processor my uncle built...1.9 Peugeot, with a lot of recycled parts from farm equipment and the coolest thing is how he used a ford escort clutch and pressure plate to engage the bar chain. Another note...your technique is already established for just how a person can be super efficient on a vertical splitter like a powersplit. That is just how they run them. With half of the amount of operator input as what you are doing.

      Yes Joe, you can clearly see the Lovejoy is resting metal to metal in the 'walk around'. Ain't that something for it to last so long and then have it fail at the most inopportune time !! LOL. No biggie, I already have the new spyder in hand. The speed comes from the single stage pump, but it takes horse power to run that much gpm at capacity. If you're not careful, this little 30 hp tractor will stall out at about the pressure relief setting so I really try to not exceed it. I can't relax as much while splitting as you can with that awesome box wedge of yours though.

    • @FromSteelToWood
      @FromSteelToWood 4 роки тому

      44gpm single stage for 30 hp is getting the most of the engine for sure!

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  4 роки тому

      @@FromSteelToWood Well Joe, I always thought the rule of thumb on a single stage pump was just about one horsepower per gpm. This little 4 cylinder is 162 cu in and I can kill it just about the time the relief valve is ready to lift in the control valve. The bigger 40 hp tractors have little or no problem at wide open throttle, but you can kill it too if you are careless. That usually only happens on the worst possible burl or snarly hardwood. The two stage pump is why they can develop such high tonnage on a 5 , 6 or 7 hp engine. Combine that with the larger diameters of the cylinders and its easy to figure. What is it....force equals surface area multiplied by the relief valve setting in psi..?? Then divide that by 2,000 for tons of force.. Something like that anyway, I may have to think about that a little more...I might be missing something in that equation....too late for me to think that hard. LOL.

    • @FromSteelToWood
      @FromSteelToWood 4 роки тому

      Lol! That is a good understanding. Pressure and gpm are both factors to take into consideration to calculate hp required. No, I don't know the formula by myself! But I can find a website for that! (www.metaris.com/hp-calculator.php). My poor 15hp gasoline engine can barely handle my new large 2 stages pump. 28gpm at 900 psi takes most of the power available. In my practical situation, the 7 gpm at 2000 psi tends to slow down the engine and will slowly kill the engine. I just think I am not 100% only on the small pump gears, but still pushing more than the 7gpm with part of the large gear pump. I am far from the maximum 3000 psi! So 44 gpm one stage... If you ran that pump steady to to 3000 psi, it would require 77 hp, at PTO!

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  4 роки тому +1

      @@FromSteelToWood iirc, the relief valve is set at 2,250 psi or so. Of course I could be wrong as memory fades a bit you know. I know we can kill either size tractors easily if we are not careful in a bad block of wood. I do know that its not set at anywhere near 3,000 psi though. I prefer the smaller tractors because they operate on MUCH less fuel and can do 90% or more of what we come in contact with. Hydraulics is one of my many weak points. LOL.

      I have given that some thought over the years and may one day make an adaptor to slip down over the top of this wedge but I would never put one on permanent. A splitter with a singe stage pump operates entirely in a different manner than a two stage splitter when it comes up against a stubborn piece of wood and unless I would use a tractor with much more horsepower, I would be stalling the engine quite frequently. With a single stage pump, it is pretty fast, especially at full gpm. We have the relief valve set pretty low to make sure we don't damage anything and it will stall the engines on these little old tractors. This one was only about 30 hp give or take on the pto. Five hp Tecumseh, rear tine and the reverse belt don't work !! I use carb cleaner and an air gun with a rubber tip to seal up against all the tiny orifices in the carb body. Iirc, the one I have has only a removable main jet. You still have a partial blockage or you are just getting a dribble of fuel at a time into the carb.
      But when I have trouble getting it going, I'll tell you what I do....but don't do it !!! LOL. But if you do do it, be ready to duck..... I open up the shroud and put a socket on the nut on the end of the crankshaft. Then I use an 18v Makita battery drill and set the choke and throttle and give it hell !! When it fires, it may shoot the socket across the yard, so have the Missus standing there with a baseball mitt ready to catch it !! (Just kidding). I've gotten good at just barely slipping the 12 point on it though, so when it starts most of the time I can slip it off and it stays on the drill with the 3/8 adapter in the chuck. Well, the idea behind the challenge was to give a few minutes of a discussion about the splitter before and after splitting and also split a given quantity of wood within a specific length of video. That limitation was supposed to be ten minutes for the whole video. So the only way to record and present it within the confines was to show the splitting in fast forward. Some of the guys didn't follow the rules as closely as did I...but I do have quite a lot of videos showing the splitter in real time...just not in 'Splitter Wars'. Like this one here: ua-cam.com/video/uzWp4f8yQtg/v-deo.html It's powered with a Farmall H in this one and I don't think there's any bit of it that is in FF mode. Thanks for the comment Waynemiser and there will be plenty more splitting videos this upcoming season.
