Soil Series 2: Soil testing for your lawn. Here’s what I am looking for.

  • People often think that I am anti-soil test, that’s definitely not the case. I believe that soil testing should be a roadmap to creating a better program. Often times soil test are used only to sell fertilizer and do not dig in to underlying issues. This video explains what I look for and of the reason I do. I would invite anybody to send copies of their soil test to me and I would be more than happy to interpret them and help build a better, more robust program. click here to have your soil report analyzed.

    I love the way you explained this. I also am very happy to know I don't need to keep adding "stuff" randomly because a soil test "recommended" pound to be added.
    Next season is going to be incredible because of this education. Thank you.

    Thank you for explaining/teaching the truth about soil and fert. You make so much sense. I feel like I’m taking a college course, gaining applicable knowledge along the way through your videos . I’m just a guy trying to grow a healthy strong organic lawn in Vegas for my kids to play on. I’ve been using your bio stimulant package through LCN and GCI and I have one of the best lawns on my street and I feel good about how I’m achieving it.

    Hey John,
    I’ve been listening to a lot of your content. May I send you a few photos of my lawn?
    My TTTF/KBG has been thriving. It’s thick, was consistent green color ( been using your RGS) but listening to all this info on dethatching, aerating and now I’m dealing with nothing but patches of lime green throughout my turf. You hear knowing your ph ( mine is 7.2), applying nitrogen in the fall, using a good quality seed, timing your pre- emergent, etc. only to experience issues like this.
    It’s frustrating.
    But would appreciate your thoughts if I could forward you photos. Thanks for your content.

    I'll take you up on this offer this spring! We are buying 2 acres of corn field and building our new home. In over my head on this one as everything I have heard is the soil will be depleted of nutrients from the current harvest. Starting from scratch. Great video! Thanks for making my current lawn more healthy this season than it has ever been.

      Just a stab in the dark, but that's probably still more fertile soil than most sub divisions where all the top soil is scraped off? At least your starting with soil that had roots growing in it.

    I love this, the video I just uploaded kind of dovetails on this yet in a much less scientific way - not planned either as you know, but just shows that your teaching is reaching! That said, if you get soil tests from my peeps they will many times be SUPER high in Phos which is why we need to start backing down some. See you next week bro!

      Love that Milo!!! but that N:P ratio hurts...

    • @Lawncology
      @Lawncology  5 років тому +1

      Curious what you mean be the N:P ratio... can you expand on that? I get asked often if there is a preferred ratio for NPK and there is not. The few people who preach that have done the most damage to soil this century than erosion could do in eons.. Soil fertility is science, not a simple ratio. The soil is going to dictate what the plant gets, not a ratio.

    • @suburbanjunglelife7395
      @suburbanjunglelife7395 5 років тому

      I was referring to the amount of P per lb of N in Milo. If I keep using Milo for my N source, I am putting down a lot of P. Since grass uses more N than P, if I keep adding a similar amount of P to N, then the P level will end up sky high. Also, since I keep mulching, that P keeps increasing. Granted, I have heard some of your programs are running N as low at 1.5N/M/yr and perhaps at that level, it wouldn't be a problem with the N:P ratio of milo depending on what you're starting with in the soil.

    • @Lawncology
      @Lawncology  5 років тому +1

      gotcha. yeah, loading soil at 1lb per K of N via milo give you have a pound of P. P in lawns even in low Phos soils will build because of what you are doing with clippings and growing roots. that phos will tie up the soil eventually if they continue to use Milo as their only nitrogen source.

    It’s a great time of year to take a soil sample! Do it before spring green up so you can prepare!!
    I just found out my soil is as high as pH 8.3 (essentially baking soda). My best grass is in an area of pH 8.1. My goal of 6.5 will take years to achieve. I wish I had known this long ago, but it’s too late in the season to put down sulphur and have it be fully changed into sulphuric acid by biological activity (my Bermuda will be going dormant within a month).

    This is such a great explanation of carbon recycling. Out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on using your lawn clippings along with other sources to produce compost and applying the compost on the lawn? I would assume it’s a similar process but could direct it to fixing troubled areas. I just don’t like the clippings on the lawn so I try to collect them when I can but understand the benefits of leaving them so trying to find that balance.

    John question have you looked into response of plants, just being cut off after being on your program?

    • @Lawncology
      @Lawncology  5 років тому +1

      79mini yes. We did ag studies for years and led us to using our products as a starter/conditioner in high N crops. We were able to see an OM build in a few short season wig only applying 2-3 gallons of material per season along side a slightly less nitrogen app

  • @milanjurich1526
    @milanjurich1526 5 років тому +1

    Within a seasonal cycle, is/are there optimal times to take a turf sample for testing? My soil in central OH came out alkaline both times tested ... so I applied Mag-I-Cal Alkaline from JG. I’m certain another test in perhaps March would once again show Alkaline. Do the NeXt biostim products such as Humic12, RGS or Aerate contribute to the organic content side of things as well?

    • @Lawncology
      @Lawncology  5 років тому

      Milan Jurich question: if you’re soil is alkaline, why did you apply the a cal-mag product? This would raise pH not lower. Acids, sulfur, iron and so forth will contribute to lower ph. Email your test results, I’d like to see them. Take your test in late fall or early spring before growing season.

    • @milanjurich1526
      @milanjurich1526 5 років тому

      Lawncology Jonathan Green makes 2 different soil pH products unfortunately both labeled as Mag-I-Cal. One issued to raise while the other is used to lower the pH. I used their Alkaline product a few months ago after my last soil test to lower the pH. Not a fan of their naming protocols. It would be cool if you had DIY products that address soil pH to spray on if it’s critical to nutrient uptake.

    Can the acids in a 3 way herbicide cause any problems in the soil environment? Would a high rate application of weed control cause a sudden drop in the ph of a lawn ?

    • @Lawncology
      @Lawncology  5 років тому

      Steve Willey actually, it can be the opposite in most cases. the pH of soils can adversely affect the results of herbicide as can the solution itself. There is not enough material applied in three way to change pH
