- In this video, I show how to replace the front brake shoes on a 2001 VW Beetle, which also needs a stripped caliper bolt hole fixed with a helicoil repair kit.

I have been so busy with what's going on in my life, I surprise myself sometimes. Took dad to the emergency room on the 31st. Installing heat in my living room. And just plane trying to catch up. Liked your bonus ending on the light, good info for bug owners, and you did a great job with the brake info for people that haven't ever done breaks.
You can message me about dad. Also, I am not back in school for another two weeks... and am available to help.
Good show, bro. Those things happen.
Yes, they do. It is always best to be prepared when it does. Thanks for the comment!
I always enjoy seeing what you are up to. Very good instructional video.
Did you strip it with the T45 or was it stripped prior to your ownership? Im needing to do this soon and dont wanna mess anything up.
It was 95% stripped... I did not even get to tighten it past 10 ft/lbs. Some people expect because it is a German made car, all bolts should be "Guten Teit!" For the most part, that is way too tight.
@@HelicoolsHelipad So was it the wrong tool used or it happened before you , sorry im confused im just asking if i follow your video and be gentle will i be safe to use a T45 ?
Good job ... you're so handy!
See a lot of 280mm disks...I like a set of 288mm tho?
Searching all these VW Bug vids to wait for someone to mention it...? Will the 288's work? #yikes
I don't know if they will or not. That will be for someone else to attempt, though.
DIY gives a great feeling of accomplishment. Could this be a lost art? Hope not.
Great video David. A couple of questions though, What is that wire on the pad? I have never seen one on a pad and I was just wondering. The other is on the helicoil, maybe put a bit of loctight on it to keep it from coming out? Enjoyed watching this one.
The wire (when the brake shoes wear down) makes a contact connection and trips a warning light on the dash. I've never seen this before, but then again, it's a German vehicle and my first VW. The helicoil instructions said that when the bolt going in gets tight, the stainless steal helicoil bites into the metal and stays put. There was no mention about needing lock-tight, so maybe it doesn't need it? I honestly don't know.
@@HelicoolsHelipad Thanks for the info. I only asked about the helicoil as when I used them they wanted loctight on it too. But you know those Germans. LOL
That should be triple square bolts otherwise called 12 point internal bolts. Be careful not to strip the head.
No sir. The internal bolt fits the T45... on other VW's, there might be a 12 point, but not on the 2001 VW New Beetle. Thanks for the comment, though. Cheers!
What star key did you use
I think it was in the video, if not... wow... I really don't remember. Something is telling me it was a 20? I recommend buying the set at Harbor Freight. They are inexpensive and very useful if you own a Beetle. Cheers!
