- In the new novel From a Certain Point of View - The Empire Strikes Back, there are tons of amazing stories, and one of them explained something a lot of fans have questioned for years; Why Didn't Yoda Remember R2-D2?
After all their Clone Wars and prequels adventures, it would only make sense for him to at least recognize the iconic droid.
Here's the answer in canon.
Have a great day and see you in tonight's watch part for The Mandalorian Season 2 watch party reaction!

LOL in clone wars, Yoda was actually visiting Dagobah WITH R2....
R2 was like "Not this hellhole again."

@@SteamCase nah because R2 had his memory wiped?
@@T0pMan15 R2, unlike most other droids, never actually got a full memory wipe. This is the leading cause for his "less than perfect" personality.
@@T0pMan15 I think it was more a restraint to not spill the beans on the prequels, that’s all.
I assumed because Yoda thought he was another random R2 unit after all these years of solitude.

Yeah same here
I always thought Obi-Wan was being smart because he says he doesn't remember owning a droid but doesn't say he doesn't remember R2
Well to be fair if you lived in a desert alone for decades you’d probably forget the droid that your evil-turned apprentice had to worry about said apprentice

i just always assumed Yoda was lying about it. Just because they are Jedi's doesn't man they can't lie.
I mean, Yoda didn't directly state he didn't remember Artoo, just didn't exactly show signs that he did remember.
I mean he lied about being Yoda and pretended to be a silly native creature. Obi-Wan lied about his identity too and even lied about Anakin. The Jedi have a history of deception.

That's literally ALL anyone says, is that Yoda and Obi Wan didnt remember R2... smh
But Obiwan just said that he doesn't remember ever owning a droid, which is true,ar2 was Anakin's droid. So i don't understand why people are making problem out of it..
Exactly
Could be a memory he wanted to push far back into his mind, given the slaughter he had barely escaped many years prior.

I never wondered about Yoda not recognizing R2, figured it was part of his act. What I always wondered about was why R2 didn’t recognize Yoda. At the end of Revenge of the Sith, only C-3PO’s memory was wiped.
I feel like he did remember, but said nothing so that Luke could figure it out himself.
@@mechanwhal6590 maybe
R2 knew who Yoda was, R2 was just trolling as usual probably thought is was funny to see Luke make a fool of himself.
It's not hard to believe Yoda DOES remember R2, and vice-versa. They simply chose not to acknowledge it around Luke because it's not essential. Luke is on Dagobah to be trained as a Jedi, not to have his droid and Yoda play catch up over the past 20+ years.
Yoda is nine hundred years old. Give the guy a break and cut him some slack, huh?
That or he actually has a ketamine addiction, and he's descended into withdrawal.
I never took it as either Yoda nor Obiwan “forgetting” who R2 was, that would be just silly, they were clearly being vague, and deceptive. In the same sentence that he says he never remembers owning an R2 unit (he technically didn’t so that’s not really a lie) he also omits/skirts the truth about Anakin’s situation. After all it was Obi-Wan who coined the “From a certain point of view” phrase
R2 jetpacking across a separatist hangar with yoda riding him will forever be my favorite memory of the lego Star Wars saga
Because the prequels didn't exist yet.
Yes but that’s no fun lol
Yes I agree but us hardcore fans need to fix plot holes
@war Fox the movies weren’t numbered before the prequels
@war Fox actually i think the first starwars was just called a new hope
@@layson7777 Yes they were, they were numbered as of Empire Strikes Back. The plan was always for a series of trilogies except George thought episode IV had the best chance of a one off success thus he opted to start there. Additionally not knowing how successful it would be, he neglected to arrogantly label what might have ended up being a stand alone movie with a confusing label such as episode IV, therefore original screenings didn't have the episode IV tag.
R2D2 tries to say hi to yoda
Yoda beats up R2D2 with a stick
Yoda could have done a L-O-T worse to R2 if he really wanted to.
I don't understand this elevation of Leia when she's even more hot headed then Luke in the OT.
She definitely had a fiery personality in the first and second movies, but that wasn’t as clear in ROTJ. She did mature.
I wouldn’t characterize her as hotheaded though because her decision making was concise.
Also, perhaps Luke could’ve learned to be more like Leia. Not at first though; that’d ruin his arc, which was done well in the OT
She was more hotheaded but she knew where she was going she was taught all about being a leader to her adoptive father, like on the other hand just hand his uncle and aunt who told him to be a farmer and he wanted something more.
It also clashes with the fact that Obi Wan says in ROTS that he'll keep watch over Luke and Yoda agrees. The implication is that they thought it would be Luke who would be trained.
@@kossend1 leia was in safer hands than luke
She was hotheaded, but she was more mature and patient.

I don't even know why this question is being asked. People forget others sometimes. I don't think Grandmaster Yoda is going to remember some droid from the clone wars.
Actually he did, and he's addressed this issue many times over the years.
I literally just saw a post saying the opposite of this
Even force wielders can be dementia
Probably, but they could likely hold it off a bit longer than other, less strong-in-the-Force individuals.

I have been watching you for about a year now and when I watch your videos it makes me feel better in my day
What if Leia went to Tattooine and Luke went to Alderaan? I'd like to see a little theory cooked up for that. Leia Skywalker and Luke Organa.

Yoda By The Time R2 On
Degobah,I Think Yoda is
Very Forgetful,He Is 900 Years old after all
Every since I've seen the prequels alot, I've been wondering this for years and *Star Wars Theory* finally showed it.
Yoda was playing a role to see what Luke was really like, his character totally changed when he said to Ben "... I cannot train him..." and Luke realisation said it all. Yoda went from crazy old creature to wise old Jedi Master
Luke failed the test but Yoda agreed to train him anyway. Wasn't Yoda playing crazy a pointless waste of time?
And this is why I love Star Wars!! Thx for everything u do Theory!!
1:29 It makes the scene with Yoda hitting R2 with his stick more affectionate
I love the ending to this video, great editing man!
Obi wan doesn’t necessarily forget r2, he said he never recalled ‘owning’ a droid. Hence he never actually owned R4. He probably did remember r2 but didn’t want to alarm or let luke know too much. I believe that’s something along the lines you’ve said before swt, great vid!
In a new hope Obi Wan never met artoo before. In Lucas notes from the 70s Threepio was made in a robot factory on the planet Affa. He first meets Artoo on the taintive 4. He wasn't made by Anakin. That was retconned later.
Yoda pretending to not remember R2-D2 is one thing but R2's memory was never completely wiped. He had vast amounts of knowledge about the entire Skywalker saga and never relayed that information to follow on masters as it became apparent that information would be useful. Why would R2 keep this information for himself?
Awesome !!! I love actually getting an answer to a question that I have had for years...
Not just practicing what he preaches, but struggling with it. Even at 900 years old he has to catch himself using defeatist phrases and corrects himself; it's not automatic even with all his experience. It's fascinating.
Thanks for doing these specific types of videos bro, your page always has the answers to my questions, thank you
Personally I always felt that Yoda intentionally did not acknowledge R2-D2 because of the danger that revelation could unleash. R2 holds probably the ONLY complete record of the clone wars, the rise and fall of anakin, the fall of the jedi order, and many, MANY other secrets that MUST survive. By revealing his connection to R2 it would imperil all of that and frankly the best way to hide something of value is in plain sight. R2 Quite frankly is the most important character in the 9 film saga, and yoda knew it.

@@festo8756 Good Question,
Goerge Lucas Never Thought of That Probably
@@theknightofmandalore7127 He did. His views regarding women were different in the 80s versus now. In the 80s he viewed Leia only as a damsel in distress/love interest. But now out the blue she is the chosen one.
@@festo8756 Correct. They weren't even supposed to be related. He didn't make that change until they were making Return of the Jedi.
@@PatrickStewarts That's correct. During the making of Return of the Jedi, in Lucas's private notes he wrote Leia - sister with an exclamation point. That's when he came up with the idea.
Goofy hermit Yoda that marvels at flashlights... is my favorite Yoda!!
Damn, I always thought it was because it wasn't written yet... also come on, there are supposedly billions of r2 units out there, probably a good chunk of them are blue...
I would really like to see a theory on what would’ve happened had Pre Visla defeated Darth Maul during their duel for control over the death watch.
Everyone's favorite droid R2👍
I like the theory that there's an unspoken agreement between Yoda, Chewbacca, Obi-Wan and R2 that none of them mention a thing about the events of the prequels lest they accidentally trigger each other's Order 66 flashbacks
I think it's pretty straight forward. When the original trilogy was written the interactions Yoda had with R2 in the prequels had not come into existence yet therefore the writing could never include any more of an interaction with R2 than he had in the original Trilogy
No shit, Sherlock. But that’s the boring answer.
@@crozecamp well it’s the way it is. You can’t retrofit something that never technically took place at the time
On an unrelated note, a theory on another thing I came to think of after replaying the Force Unleashed games and how Galen Marek in TFU and Starkiller(clone) in TFU2 is still the one and the same person...From a certain point of view.
it goes back to old legends material with Sidious using force transfer to transfer his spirit into a clone of himself. Given Darth Vaders ability in canon to trap the spirit of an inquisitor to an old Jedi temple, why should he not have that power in TFU and do that with Starkiller to get a perfect clone? It could also explain how Starkiller regains the memories. it is not just from accelerated cloning but also because the spirit of Galen Marek lives on in the clone. It also explains how all his other clones are insane when fighting him on Kamino, they don't gave his spirit so they are submitted to madness. Perhaps that is why Kota was so sure a Jedi cannot be cloned. the clones would not be as strong with the force or have the same control and they would be subjected to madness unlike non force sensitive templates. Because the Jedi template was still alive. Had the jedi died and force transfer been initiated, one clone could emerge without sustaining madness. But that is a line of approach no Jedi would take willingly as it is more of a Sith approach.
R2D2 is one of my favorite star wars characters hes so dope to me he has saved many heroes lives throughout the movies
Theory, I just saw you jump from 2.55 to 2.56 mil as I was watching the video. Been since 2016. Keep it up bro!
Yoda was on Ketamine withdraw when he saw Luke, he couldn’t remember

I've actually read an article regarding this topic and how it comfirmed the new canon about Yoda remembering R2.
YES IVE BEEN WAITING FOR CONTENT ON THIS.
Plus+ for not having the outro on a short video✅
Another question...why didnt R2 remember yoda? I mean Obi-Wan could be an old guy, but yoda's race is very special
Theres no way you posted this. I'm watching empire and I was just thinking about this lol
Watching this on my lunch break at work
Yo theory, this certain point of view book looks epic! Where can I pick it up ?
A thought popped into my head after watching this video and I don’t know if you did a video on it but when R2 gave C3PO his memories back at the end of rise of skywalker did he he give him all of his memories including his time with Anakin and Padme
Probably. I like to think R2 could have restored C3PO's memory at any time but 2 reasons stopped him - loose lips sink ships and 3PO had a habit of pissing R2 off every time R2 was about to and it was a screw you. Remember how 3PO was when R2 was putting him back together? R2 probably went "if that's your attitude no memories for you".
I could listen to you narrate books all day lol
Time for another edition scene for yoda and R2 conversations scene. I would like to hear yoda say "thank you for not tell him"
Everyone talking about Yoda remembering R2
Me, thinking about how old R2 and C3PO are just like everyone else by the send of the saga
“Do or do not...there is no try”. Only a sith deals in absolutes lol

I always had the Idea that R2 units are more like phones in SW as in mass production. If i see a old phone of mine after many years, all i would know is that i ownd 1 but i would not know it was that one in specifiek. So for Yoda and Obi one yes they knew a R2 but how would they instantly that it was this R2.
i got a chill when you said There is no try.
I love your vids man, keep it up and may the force be with you
Nice!
Fancy seeing you here!
I've always thought that except for Anakin everyone would see "just another old R2 unit".
The title of the video is a bit misleading, but still nice video and to the point.
You expect Yoda to remember every single coffee maker in the jedi temple..sheesh
"Astromechs are well known to have unreliable memory circuits" it was a quote from c3po but I cant remember if it was from clone wars or rebels
Was just watching empire in 4k and this gets recommended
Obviously they recognized each other, but let's see how that conversation would go...
R2: (bleeping, obvi) "Master Luke, this *is* Master Yoda!"
Luke: "What?!? How do you know that, Artoo?"
R2: "Because I was your dad's astromech!"
Luke: "You knew my father?!? And you're telling me this NOW, when we've flown together for three years??? OK, I want the whole story, NOW!"
Yoda: "Artoo... a fool was I. Your memory, too, we should have wiped."
*CRUNCH.*
Luke: "Uh... Master Yoda? I can't navigate hyperspace to leave here without him..."
*Droid parts rattle as they fall to the ground*
Yoda: "... Unexpected, this is. And unfortunate."
Wisdom is reminding yourself the lessons learned in youth even at your twilight's end.
Outrageous this is!
It's cool how Yoda had almost an affectionate thought for "Anakin's old droid" as he put it. After all, they had shared many dangers
I always figured that when R2 got shot in the Death Star run some of his memories got lost
Can you do a video explaining how Ahsoka got her second lightsaber? It just randomly appears in TCW with no explanation.
Love it when you make videos centered on the originals, or the prequels, and the.......sequels, no wait just kidding
Yoda and R2's adventure was really good
Äh... What? Yoda hoped Obi-Wan would send Leia? The last time he saw them both was when they were born. How could he even care about who will be send? Also Obi-Wan was hiding on Tatooine close to Luke while Leia was on Alderaan. So how could he even expect that Leia might be send?
Obi and yoda always did remember them.
They just acted like they didn't infront of luke to hold the secrets
I was literally watching another video from 3 years ago from the channel talking about the same
I was just thinking of this the other day

Yoda might just think its a random R2 unit
Why didn't I ever think of this before?
What audio equipment do you use? It's a crisp sound.
You should just release an audiobook version of you reading it with all your voices ❤️
I feel like both Obi-Wan and Yoda definitely knew about R2 and 3PO, but since they specifically mentioned to wipe their minds at the end of episode 3, they probably just didn't mention anything since neither of the droids remembered the two Jedi, but I'm glad that they mentioned this in the novel.
R2 wasn't wiped just 3P0, R2 of course found this amusing and did his equivalent of laughing.
Listening to this book on audio and its brilliant
Maybe he did but it didn't really matter to him.
Or he just thought "Hmmm... acts in mysterious ways, the Force does. Predict it at times even I cannot. And just as well this is! For OUR guide, the Force is. Our connection, our bond to all life and all things it is. Through all things it acts to fulfill that which it wills to be."
