  • Four-hundred-and-fifty years of Local Government in County Clare are covered in a new publication by Clare County Council.
The book, the first of its kind produced by any local authority in Ireland, documents hundreds of landmark moments relating to local governance in Clare from the construction of the Ardnacrusha scheme and Shannon Airport to the Council's management of the health service, the temporary abolition of Clare County Council in 1942, the role of the Urban District Councils and Town Councils through to the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

My grandmother is a McNamara from Clare who moved to England as a teenager. I've enjoyed watching this to learn a bit more about her home county, and one day I will visit!

A wonderfully engaging presentation, thank you! My surname is Ennis, and my grandfather emigrated to America in 1910 when he was 2. He liked to tell us our folk were from Clare. It'd be nice if true. I hope to bring my son for a visit one day not long from now. God bless you, bless Clare, bless Ireland, and bless everything Ennis.

So much more that this 15-min video can mention like the Shannon Scheme in Ardnacrusha near Limerick City. A huge undertaking for the new Irish State in the mid-1920's, it involved carving a canal out of the Lower Shannon to harness the power of the river for electricity,, and the German firm Siemens were employed for the undertaking. The area was suddenly filled with foreign workers, and massive machinery transported to the site.
My grandfather Patrick Clear's little home was in the way of the work, and as he ran a shop there, his livelihood was threatened also. He and my grandmother had two small babies, my father Paddy and my Uncle Denis, and lived with the blasting which did not even cease by night.
The story of the Shannon Scheme is wonderfully told in Michael McCarthy's 'High Tension' (The Lilliput Press 2004) and includes my grandparents' struggle to get compensation, which eventually was given and they moved to a bungalow beside the church. I was born into that house.
My father used to point out to us the ruins of the house where he was born on the bank of the tail race at Parteen bridge. It's completely overgrown now.

My 4x great-grandmother was Catherine O'Brien, born in Cavan, Ireland, 1790-1845 she must have one of those O'Briens. My grandfather Michael Patrick Hickey was her 2x great-grandson. It's hard to find any ancestry information before Catherine O'Brien because of all the records lost to the "great fire". This is a very interesting video, thanks for the insight to my long lost ancestors.

My grandmother was born in County Claire in 1890’s . Her family surname is Sheehan and left in 1898 for the USA. Her mothers brother had moved to Chicago and they sent her to live with his family. Her parents Tom and Mary Tom are buried in Kilcrist cemetery. I would love to purchase one of these books if anyone knows how to do so.

Its almost unbearable to think of the misery and suffering that the gentle sensitive people endured under Foreign Rule . Maybe reparations from the UK maybe something to think about going forward in the future

There isn’t a hope that England would do that. Look how long it took them to apologise to the Birmingham six.

    • @maryflannery6805

Honestly I don't think reparations are fair. The people who inflicted suffering are all dead, and those affected by it are dead also. Reparations hurt the living, who are all innocent, and benefit the living who do not deserve it.
