First of all, your pot basket has a crack. Replace it and make sure impeller is not clogged. Second, after emptying baskets (anywhere but in the pool), you should run filter on normal to clear small debris out of the pot and pipes. Otherwise, all that small debris will end up stuck inside your grids. And third, after backwashing till clear, turn off pump, leave air bleeder open and let water in filter siphon all the way down. then turn on and continue backwashing. The water will splash around inside of filter and knock more DE loose. Also a good idea to switch from normal to DE, and back again a couple times (always turn off pump in between moving valve). continue doing these extra steps until no dirty water comes out of backwash line. That's how you properly Backwash a DE filter
Darn, I've been doing it wrong all these years. I see you're supposed to dump the full skimmer basket back into the pool and not into the garbage. Oh well, thank God for this educational video.
@@SJosh01 yes he did. and he also didn't backwash the filter properly. he should read an owners manual on a de filter. he cant possibly be in the pool industry
thank you very much to showing this, I have a question when we backwash can you tell me which pipe it coming from the filter, I am new owner pool, thank you again
Hi there, great video! Tell me if this idea works. For the past 5 years I've been backwashing once per week just like you said. In the city that I live in, the government has imposed extra taxes and charges for wastewater and also the "Stormwater" tax on all home owners. My water bill is now $700 extra from April - October each year. My idea is catching ALL the backwashed water in a very large clean drum. As the backwash water enters the drum, I have a filter to catch all the debris and algae. I let the water stand for 8 hours and let all the remaining impurities either settle to the bottom or float to the top and then have a hose introduce the "clean" backwashed water into the pool. Do you think this is feasible? As the pool starts up again in filtration mode, the cycle starts over again. Will this cause any problems to the filter and pump? Obviously I would monitor my chemistry very carefully and adjust accordingly. Let me know what you think? Thank you very much.
+Michael Zeiss Sorry to catch your comment so late! It all depends on what's in the water that a filter won't catch such as Cyunaric acid and total dissolved solids. DE filters will catch particles as small as blood cells but things like calcium and other minerals that cause water to be hard won't be picked up. By conventional pool filtration. If you live in an area where your water is extremely low in hardness to a point where you have to add Calcium on start up, you may be on to something.
Look into a DE separation tank. It will filter out the DE into a filter basket and you can run nearly all of the water back into your pool. This way you waste a minimal amount of water and won't have to go through the settling process.
Great clear instructions, step-by-step, just what I needed. But, PLEASE clarify that DE IS IS IS hazardous to people and pets in its dry form. Please add text overlay at least.
No one is going to snort a line of DE ... a brief dusting isn't going to harm you. Everyone knows coffee is hot, and that you shouldn't huff any powder regardless of what it is. No need for warning labels for the obvious. Society infantilizes us enough as it is.
That's up to you. It's inert but when it dries the dust isn't the best thing in the world for you. Also it's REALLY bad for bugs which is a good thing. You can shovel it up and into a trash can.
I recently backwashed my Pentair FNS Plus (48sq ft) filter for the first time. The guy at the pool store said I didn't necessarily need a backwash hose and could just let it pump onto the grass. From what I understand the DE won't hurt the lawn, but the chlorine in the water will, is that correct? Or is it non-detrimental for the lawn due to backwashing being so infrequent?
It takes A LOT of chlorine to hurt the grass....like 50-60 parts per million before I would imagine it even bothering the grass but if your Chlorine levels are that high, you've got bigger problems. The issue I would see is with back washing. If you backwash to the same place every time, after a few years you'll end up with with a high spot in the yard where the grass may have trouble growing due to the DE not being the greatest medium for growing grass. Don't sweat the chemicals in the water but spend the money on a heavy duty backwash hose ( they last forever!) so you can move it around the yard.
our pipe on the inside keeps popping off the mainfold what can we do to keep it from popping off .. plus we have d.e. that keeps coming out of the return jets.. we have checked the filter but no rips or tears just. trying to figure out why it keeps popping off maybe the pressure idk.. any tips would be helpful..
Hey Beck, there may be a couple of things going on, first check that the stand pipe O ring is in good shape, even with lube it should offer enough friction to hold the manifold on to the stand pipe. There could be an issue where the grids themselves need to be treated with a filter cleaner. What could be happening in this case is that when the water enters the filter tank and if the grids are clogged with calcium and grime they may not fill with water very fast and it's causing them to float upward which could lift the whole assembly off of the stand pipe. Either way the DE is entering through the stand pipe when the manifold lifts off. If all of the components are in good shape as you say, that should solve it. Hope that helps!
Obviously the skimmer basket dumped into the pool was for convenience sake in making the video, and if you have the proper Weir door and skimmer diverter valve, it's no big deal. It will just float right back in as soon as the pump is turned on again.
yeah so this video was a joke but when a dude comes along this video and breaks his pool grid because you never said to also clean that and you get sued whatcha gonna do
I do have a question... why did you dump the leaves from the skimmer basket back into the pool ??? I laughed so hard.
lol me too!!!! WTH
He just dumped the leaves and shit back in the pool lol 😱

Did he just dump his skimmer basket INTO THE POOL!!!???
For real.....
Dave Talbot he didn't even take the filter grids out and clean them. what a numbskull.
lol As soon as he Did that I stop Watching the Video lol, And your comment is Priceless
Lmao! I stopped watching at 1:05'ish...After about 3 secs of my mouth wide open in disbelief, I just about fell out of my chair laughing.
I had to watch it again: "...Once all our baskets are emptied.." PRICELESS
clear and concise, without a load of extraneous stuff. Thanks.
Lmfao he dumped the skimmer in the pool.. Nice job sir
You dumped the skimmer debris back into the pool...🤭🤭🤭🥴🤯🤠 Real smart cowboy!
Perfect! Specific, clear instructions. Exactly what I was looking for...and I followed them without any issues! Thanks a bunch :)-Sharon
Glad I could help Sharon!
itzagonga1 Did you dump all of the crap in your skimmer back into your pool? Lol
DO NOT follow the instructions in this video! This guy is a horrible technician and should not be trusted working on a pool
@@SJosh01 yes he did. and he also didn't backwash the filter properly. he should read an owners manual on a de filter. he cant possibly be in the pool industry
How do you do a vacuum to waste with this exact system without using the grids?
Why did you pour the shit in the skimmer basket in the pool lmao
+Rhapbus1 I agree, that seems rather redundant.
thank you very much to showing this, I have a question when we backwash can you tell me which pipe it coming from the filter, I am new owner pool, thank you again
I really appreciate this. You showed everything, including what the water should look like when properly back-washing.
Incredibly helpful. Thanks!
Why didn't you run the backwash hose into the pool since you dumped the skimmer baskets back in the pool?
Because then it would have gone from a harmless stunt for a video to an hour long ordeal to clean up.
you should have shovled in some dirt as well. maybe dump a can of paint into the skimmer next time as well

you should not be backwashing a de filter every week. read an owners manual for any manufacturer that makes de filters
Great Video, thank you very much for the useful information. Do you know approximately how much water is lost during the backwash process?
Javier Romero 20,000 gallons.
I'm brand new to owning a pool and wanted to know where do I put my back wash hose ....where do I actually attach it to? Please help
Can you email us a few pics of your pool equipment?
Hey can you help me? Where did you end of attaching it to
Great clear instructions, step-by-step, just what I needed.
But, PLEASE clarify that DE IS IS IS hazardous to people and pets in its dry form. Please add text overlay at least.
Thanks for the reminder. I added in the descriptions to both my DE filter videos.
+Cheryl George I actually mention twice in the video that you don't want to breathe the dust or get it in your eyes.
No one is going to snort a line of DE ... a brief dusting isn't going to harm you.
Everyone knows coffee is hot, and that you shouldn't huff any powder regardless of what it is.
No need for warning labels for the obvious. Society infantilizes us enough as it is.
Thanks for the video. What do you do with the spent DE that you pumped into your yard?
That's up to you. It's inert but when it dries the dust isn't the best thing in the world for you. Also it's REALLY bad for bugs which is a good thing. You can shovel it up and into a trash can.
Thanks!
George Forall I was actually having the same problem but I got a "backwash sock" which helped a lot

hey thanks we got it fixed .
I heard a bunch of pigs or hogs in the background at 20 seconds in , were you near a farm?
You do know DE in dry form is bad for you???? Right?
hi,
does it make any difference if you leave the basket in and put the de in or should the basket be removed then de pour in? thanks!
Not a whole lot, sometimes a big clump of DE will get stuck at the bottom of the skimmer but nothing swishing your hand around won't fix.
Nice video.
Can my chickens eat diatomaceous Earth?
nawww

It was a joke, LOL
This was a very funny video from dumping the basket back in the pool then mixing the DE by hand. Was it supposed to be so funny?!?!
Thank you. Very helpful!
takes basket
dumps back in pool
ggwp
But the basket was full!
theres no way that you are actually in the pool industry
Sorry
this procedure is wrong
The is NOT the way to properly backwash a d.e. filter at all.
Hey William. Please help us improve our services by telling us what we’re doing wrong.
At least he threw it in front of the skimmer
Wtf did I just watch!? I’ll never get this time back...... 🤦🏼♂️
And then you took EXTRA time to comment on top of that!!! Face it, you love us and you now know how to backwash a DE filter!
I did that as a joke. It
yeah so this video was a joke but when a dude comes along this video and breaks his pool grid because you never said to also clean that and you get sued whatcha gonna do
Sure glad ur not my pool guy...
And we’re sure glad you aren’t our customer. Don’t you love a win-win situation! Don’t fret, you’ll find the pool guy you’re most compatible with.
