Nightdive should’ve handled these ports and the game should’ve released as it’s own separate title for both platforms. Or better yet, -Rare- another studio could’ve spent the time polishing up the XBLA version and ported it to Switch and Xbox assuming they still have the source code.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I've seen in an interview with Nightdive's CEO that they had tried to remaster GE (just like with Quake). However, with no success.
It's flawless and near identical to the n64 version but with better aim. Y'all should just accept the fact it's 25yrs old and isn't supposed to be compared to a 2023 game. Y'all are all spoiled and entitled. It was never meant to be 60fps and never meant to have online play get over it
@@ionstocke4701 never say never. With the amount of money that Microsoft has, they could have easily funded a perfect version of this classic game to be made. People aren't entitled. Microsoft was just being selfish. Why did they make a gaming division if they didn't want to give their best ?
@@Vamptonius yeah I looked it up and see that it was finished. Really gotta wonder why they didn’t just release that version instead. I also didn’t know it can switch between the updated and original graphics like Halo MCC. What a shame it’ll never see an official release
When I was in my senior year of high school my electronics class had a game day where a bunch of people brought in old games. One guy brought in GoldenEye and absolutely slayed everyone in multiplayer because he'd memorized spawn locations and literally just spawn camped people. As you may imagine it wasn't long before we started to work together against this guy (despite it technically being a free for all).
I really wish we got the official release of the remaster back in 2007 by Rare. That looked and played so good especially with the toggle for old/new graphics.
That toggle reminded me so much of the remaster for Halo. It was a cool way to experience that game. Would've definitely played Goldeneye until the console died if it had came out.
Reminds me of the old "Valve is a small indie company" argument people have for TF2 not getting updates. Both Valve and Nintendo are multi billion dollar companies. There are no excuses.

Would this be able to be customizable to only Goldeneye or would this change controls for the entire Switch & all games? And if it changes controlsnfor everything can it at least be kept as a profile and switch back and forth easily? As much as I may want to try the Switch version I only have a Lite so this sounds like a bad experience without the N64 controller, which is its own issue since it cannot be docked to a bigger screen
"Goldeneye will disappear along with it" But, thanks to you and people in this scene, it never will enirely. Emulation is preservation and I'm grateful some people care enough about all of it.
Emulation is the closest thing to duplicating physical creations, and duplication is the real way of preservation. Everything will expire someday, but extinction is what we can prevent.
The biggest problem with Goldeneye is that it isnt diverse enough. You barely have any people of color in it, only a few, while there are literally thousands of caucasian soldiers/characters. It is basically a White Supremacy game which is why I refuse to play it.
Ah well. Let's be quite honest here. Even if it was removed again, Goldeneye was just the Perfect Dark beta, and Perfect Dark was so freaking good that it made Goldeneye almost completely irrelevant.
Too bad they didn't release the XBLA version. Perfect Dark XBLA was a perfect tribute to the original game, and GoldenEye definitely deserves the same level of dedication.
That's the same engine I think? So they could have ported GoldenEye to go to 60 FPS. Maybe it's contract restrictions and lack of time since the deal was made, they had to run more simple emulation...
Giant companies: "Why should we spend more time and resources offering a quality product when we can offer the bare minimum and people will still throw their money at us?" I'd love to blame it on the companies but, sadly, all the people who buy their products are to blame. Once a product really underperforms at sales, you bet they will try harder for the next one. Unfortunately you have all the people who pre-order or buy at launch, and then complain. At that point complaints rarely do anything.
@@CarloxForever Unfortunately, it's more of a double-edged sword in the modern gaming scene. Every company is so driven by the need for ridiculous profits that it's no longer a case of "We'll do better next time" if a product like this underperforms, instead their reaction tends to be "It underperformed, so that means there's no market for it". After all, with how insanely expensive and time consuming game development tends to be today, major companies would rather just not invest time and resources into something that's not a smash hit before it even releases. It sucks, but that's the sad reality of the modern gaming scene.
@@MoneyManHolmes to be fair i'd probobly leak it too. that version was very polished just to get scrapped. i know that it's kind of a mute point, but it reminds me of Final Fantasy 2 and 3; (the originals, not 4 and 6) where because the SNES was coming out, those games got canned for the Western Release because Nintendo wanted SNES sales to be the best it could be off the start. then; there was the cancelation of Starfox 2, which i think was finished, but was another game canceled by Nintendo because the Nintendo 64 was coming out.
Remember the perfect dark remake? It was PERFECT. 60 fps, and the resolution was updated to HD. was an amazing remaster and only cost like 10 bucks on xbla in 2010.
I bought perfect dark for my n64 not long ago, and it was unplayable , even with the n64 expansion pack you get like 15 fps- MAX and it's usually around 10fps. That combined with the controls made it completely unplayable. The remaster was brilliant as it also added dual stick controls.

I understand though, I didn't really like the Perfect Dark XBLA remaster as you can't change to the old models and textures.
What some folks don’t understand is that we aren’t being ungrateful or finding things to complain about, it’s just that Goldeneye means alot to 90s gamers and has such a huge following. You would expect something a little bit more out a rerelease like this almost 25 years after it’s initial release. I agree with MVG that the scrapped XBLA should’ve been the basis for this rerelease not have the development between switch and xbox versions spread out.
Indeed, a dual variant of the original N64 version and a modern, true 4k modern version should have been released, with all the relevant license holders getting their heads knocked together until an agreement was reached. If Microsoft can pay billions for Activision and Bethesda. surely something could have been worked out for Goldeneye? Or was Bezos "Blofeld" at Amazon to blame given they now own MGM?
It was crap back then and its crap now, only reason it was played was bc only local multiplayer shooter we had before we got voodoo2 cards to play Quake2. Nobody cares about your soppy nostalgia midlife crisis Dan Massa.
I think what MVG said in the video summarize my thoughts: it's 2023 we should expect more not less. This isn't just about this game but so many other games. Looking at that unreleased rare version, it's mind-boggling that they didn't make something close to that(for crying out they did that in 2007!). They could have had options in the game to run the old school graphics or the newer enhanced ones. It's a shame there are so many issues with games and licensing, it's a swamp I get it but us consumers shouldn't have to suffer because a greedy company(or more) can't do anything right.
Something makes me believe in a year or 3 there could be a message by Microsoft or Nintendo saying "You have until X day to play this game before its removal from the service."
Microsoft is definitely heading down that road. Gamepass is their main focus on how gamers will access titles. They don't want anyone to actually own the games.
Sure, why not?... - This is probably under a license that will run out, unless they deem it worth to extend. Nothing "shocking" here, but of course gamers will act all surprised and outraged once that will be announced.
@@Ray__E - It's not so much about that, it's more about that they're simply running a subscription-service that needs to be attractive from month to month or year to year. - There's nothing wrong with that, because the majority (which is the general mainstream public that doesn't nerd around on these videos) definitely doesn't need to "own" anything (not like, even if you'd have a disc or anything, you "own" it anyway, that's a fabricated argument "gamers" like to throw around), because they just live their lives, go to work, occasionally and casually play some games that are available on whatever service they use, and move the frick on. - There's no real loss to them, because they just consume and move on, which is very normal non-obsessive behavior. But even when you're more obsessive "gamers" like us geeks here, are you really going to play most of these games forever and ever?... There's always this talk of "I want to be able to play muh gaemz years down the line!"... Will you, really?... It's unlikely and more of a stance of "principle" (which I get, but isn't realistic). And if you're one of the few who happens to run into a game they can't play, either just choose something else or emulate. - Look, I'm from the old DOS and NES generation, I "get" it, but it's just not that much about ownership, which is a lie for software-based products anyway, and more about support for accessibility. And in the end, you should just know what you pay for and consider if it's worth it or even all that important. An "all you can play buffet" type subscription, even if games come and go, is just one option. - The sad part for this game is that it's the only way available and not also on platforms like Steam or whatever, it's MORE limited than even a digital license. Options are what we need.
what I find the funniest and saddest about the switch port is that goldenEye already has dual analog support(it just required you to use two N64 controllers) they could very well have changed a few knobs here and there and added dual analog.
You still can play it with the right control scheme. You have to go through the Switch Controller settings. Funny how MVG and everyone else here just completely fails to acknowledge that. It's cumbersome, yes. The right control scheme should have been built in the game. Regardless, there is still a way to circumvent it, at least.
@@Fluera In speedrunning there are many strats that require using one of the two-controller control schemes. It's quite interesting, but speedrunners hate having to play with two controllers.
I'm gonna guess it's because they don't want to implement custom controls for every N64 game... which they definitely should do. F zero X has some weird shoulder button assignments IIRC and I needed to use the system button reassignments to make it play better for me. I'm sure there's more games that would benefit from it seeing what a weird versatile mess the N64 controller was.

Very good point about the XBLA version. If the rights issue was resolved, I can't understand why it wasn't used as a base for this release. Still, at least the XBLA version is out there, and the various community patches/fixes for it make it even better.

That XBLA version was literally about 90% complete by the time it was canned. Such a shame. And because it was a full XDK rewrite, it was actually an Xbox 360 game that just happened to look like Goldeneye. Unlike this version which is emulated.
The decompilation is over 90% finished the last time I checked. I also heard that people were decompiling the XBLA version but I haven’t heard anything else about that project.

Irony is that original N64 version has dual stick support by using two controllers. One of the alternate control mappings had Z trigger fire emulating a gun for a right hander(Default was left handed!), analogue stick under thumb for aim, d-pad to move, left shoulder to ADS. It's a forgotten father to today's default controller layouts. iirc it also had a lean around corner effect if you were right up on a corner, ADS and strafed a little you would lean presenting a smaller target and much easier to snap back. What I wished for this game was a graphic remaster, and all the stuff cut from the beta to be put back into the game (boat to the secret island on Dam, all Bonds, etc)
I know players see every bit of cut content as some special thing they missed out on, but cutting the island from dam was a deliberate artistic decision, the Devs said it broke the pacing of what was meant to be a fairly straightforward opening level. (Having said that, throwing a way to get over there into a remake as a secret easter egg for the hardcore fans would be pretty cool). And yeah All Bonds was a licensing matter - in fact I've read the one change to the game's rom on NSO+ that has been found is that ALL traces of All Bonds has been removed from the game's code - those portraits that were left behind in the original game to be found by modders are gone.
@@user-kt4km9df3f Honestly, if it hadn't been cut, it would just be a normal part of the game, nothing special about it, and we would have taken it for granted. You'd ride over on the boat, maybe shoot a guard or two, and perhaps that underground room you visit on 00 Agent was originally going to be over there or something. I think there's something to be said for all the wonder and allure it ended up having, adding to all those playground rumours and internet myths that games had back in these days. Ultimately, all of that was probably more entertaining than the island would've been if they stuck to the original plan.
Go into Switch's Controller Settings, and swap the Left and Right sticks. Then, in GoldenEye's in-game settings, change to a setting that puts Look on the analog stick (I use 1.2 Solitaire). Applying both of these changes gives you forward/back movement and strafe on your Left stick, and look up/down/left/right on your Right stick.
You can also swap the right (ZR) and left (ZL) triggers so that you shoot with the right trigger and aim with the left trigger. I think you also have to invert the controls in-game to Up Right.
This might be just me, but I’m so glad a carbon copy of the 1997 version is here. With all its faults and janky frame drops, it’s exactly what I played back then. Sure some improvements could have been done to make it a better game, but it is faithful to the original 😅
I actually don’t remember these so often mentioned framedrops. Even though I remember there where levels in Perfect Dark that would get very slow under certain circumstances. But I tend to overlook such thinks more then other thin-skinned people.
I had no issues with how the Xbox version played or ran. It was as accurate a recreation of the original version I could ask for. I don't care about "60fps" or aby of that.
It should be noted that Rare Replay was offered (for free) to all Xbox gamers in the past (after an E3 event, if I recall correctly). This was a very generous move from Microsoft honestly.
It was free on mixer there live streaming service which shut down July 2020, they gave way loads of free stuff on that, I had a physical copy so was great to get a free digital version.
My god gamers are a bunch of entitled crybabies. Anyone who thought it would be anything other than an n64 virtual console version is an absolute moron
@Firthy I feel like the agreement was probably just to release it as an emulated version in Rare & Nintendo's emulator collections, not to re-release it as a new, standalone remake. That would explain why we got this instead of a full remake. Though man, it would've been nice if Nintendo added a patch to remap the default controls... They've proven before that they totally can do something like that with memory patches.

I’ve been enjoying, like you said MVG, just lucky to be playing it in some capacity on modern consoles. Wish we could’ve got that 360 version, but at least we got achievements
Unfortunately the licensing nightmare that G64 has been mired in since the early 2000s probably played the biggest role in holding back the potential of this re-release. I tend to agree that the only way all the parties involved would allow this thing to live again on modern hardware is for it to be as close to a 1:1 with the original as possible. Its sad that we have sit here having to be thankful that Goldeneye is available at all, but given the number of cookie jars that had to be simultaneously pilfered to make this happen...it really is kind of a small miracle. My hope is that if the download numbers impress enough, maybe the licensing gods will be convinced to let more be done to remaster this classic in the future
If only we got the version that was being developed back during the 360 era. It’s seriously a shame since it was supposed to have online multiplayer plus updated visuals, but it never came to be.

i'm so happy about all the efforts to preserve original games. most of the time they are the superior versions anyway and you get all the community efforts on top such as hacks, texture packs and emulator shenanigans. there are so few good remakes. most are just cash grabs.
Something to note. A level like Streets has significant frame rate drops. During the drops, the in game clock keeps running at normal speed. This makes time goals significantly harder than they used to be. You have to switch to d-pad movement to be able to pull off the Streets agent, and Statue secret agent time goals without a crazy level of difficulty.

While not perfect, I'm super grateful to have the opportunity now to just turn on my Xbox and start playing GoldenEye 007. I think too many people expected something different, I knew it was going to be somewhat similar to the original N64 version with minor improvements. With that being said, I'm happy to have GoldenEye 007 again, I haven't played this amazing classic in well over a decade or more. Also, I'm not sure how accurate this information is, but there's speculations that the remastered version of GoldenEye 007 for the X360 was cancelled because Nintendo stepped in. I do hope they do patch the game in order to fix some of the issues on both platforms, GoldenEye 007 is a classic that should get the most upright respect and treatment.
I've been seeing people say "Just be happy we got this at all" Can't believe standards have been lowered so much that we got people defending a game that was already completed and has legendary status with nostalgia, but sure let's settle for jank instead of giving MGM & the other publishers feedback given how borked it is. It's pretty funny that the XB version of all versions has compressed audio given you'd think that'd be more of a 64 issue given the hardware limitations. But no, somehow the cart is doing better than the digital version of a game from the 90s. They're likely banking on this kinda attitude, that "Why bother? Just kick it out and it's good enough". It's truly shameful, I can't imagine what hell the devs went through dealing with all the legal tape the publishers & Rights holders had put up with. Hopefully the true hero, Timesplitters 2 & Future Perfect get good remaster/ports/whatever so this way we get the GoldenEye sequels, remastered, that we deserve.
I fired up the Series X version, saw the hideous polygon wobbling (probably the result of a low precision thing that was never intended to be rendered at 4K), and uninstalled it, saying "MVG is gonna have a field day with this."
You should have mentioned 1964GEPD! It's esentially Project64 with a modified codebase for special support of GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. For example you can run both games with 60 fps. You can run both games even perfectly fine with mouse and keyboard!
@Simon Espinosa🏳️🌈⃠ Not really. Or i can't find where he mentioned it. He just mentioned Project64. 1964GEPD is a fork, specially recoded for both games.
I skimmed through some of the video, so he might have mentioned it, but there's also a decompilation effort that should result in a native PC port, similar to Ocarina of Time. That's the one to watch. But GEPD was already good enough that I could breeze through levels with ease. It's actually embarrassingly easy to get even the 'difficult' times like Invincibility with GEPD.
The Switch version does have dual stick controls though. You have to set the controls to 1.2 Solitaire and swap the sticks in the system settings. I wish it was the default, sure, but it's wrong to say that modern controls aren't an option in the Switch version.
I played it this morning and after remapping my 8 Bitdo pro+ controller around abit with the help of UA-cam I was able to control it brilliantly. Love replaying this classic, its been years since I played it.
Kinda sad it's so rare for these old console games to get native ports... Just emulators... If the source was available we would have a beautiful native PC port by end of the week
I do believe he must be mistaken. I have the physical version and I don't have Game Pass. As soon as I popped in the disc for Rare Replay into my Series X and installed it, GoldenEye popped up in the queue and was right there waiting for me!
Yeah if they released the remaster they would have to clear it with Nintendo, share it with Nintendo, and write about 50 different royalty checks to the people who were involved in 1997 and haven't even thought about the game since then.
My best guess as a bystander with no actual knowledge of the circumstances is honestly that, considering how difficult securing the rights has always been, the XBLA version was fully scrapped in favor of emulation as part of stipulations both with MGM (possibly a "you cannot release a changed version, you can only release the nintendo 64 game as we already approved it) or concerns with Rare, considering how long ago that old port was made. It's possible that code loss might've occurred, or people who would need to be credited or paid for it no longer work with the company, so in the face of dealing with that, they decided to just opt for emulation instead, on account of the fact that they likely wouldn't make any additional money off of it anyway, being unable to sell it standalone.
I was bombarded with replies when I left a comment on a video about GE NSO. I wouldn’t be surprised if they added rollback netcode like what they are doing with SNK’s latest games (half joke). It would have both satisfy those with nostalgia and those who want a more definitive experience, if Nintendo is to blame. At least Perfect Dark has online MP.
Nintendo's consent was a big factor in the game being re-released at all. There's no way that they'd have accepted the Xbox version looking so much better. Yes, the XBLA code could have been ported to Switch, but that would have been a much bigger time and money investment than just using their existing emulation framework. They'd have had to hire Code Mystics (or another studio) to do the work, rather than being able to simply do it in-house. Microsoft would also have to be willing to hand over the source code for the code for the XBLA port in such a scenario, and they may not have wanted to do that for free. Or the source code may even have been lost, given it's an unreleased game from 15+ years ago. Who's to say Rare even have it any more? Overall, I'm not surprised that this is all we get. As with everything related to GoldenEye, there are just too many complications for the XBLA version to ever resurface officially.
@@CaptainKenway I have also heard (and this may be bullshit since it's all just twitter / forum talk) that one complication for the XBLA versions release is that the Rare devs working on it didn't actually have MGM:s permission to to do so. They were working on it as a pitch more or less, but never actually had permissions to do so- which means that if that version were to become playable everything in it would have to be scrutinized and investigated- but Goldeneye N64 is already vetted, and it is probably WAY quicker for them, and less legal bullshit to cut through, to go with the N64 version.
"We were told this was going to be the original game made available via Switch Online, in the same way many other games have been made available. Despite this being exactly what we were told we were getting, I, as a UA-camr, was expecting something very different. Here is a lengthy video on why you should be outraged for being given what you were told you were being given."
Corporations are taking over more and more. Enthusiasts made an awesome emulated version of the game back in early 2000s? What a shame, in 2023 it's simply not possible to make 60 or at least solid 30 fps version of a 1997 game on cutting edge systems, mate. Oh, and we also can't figure out good controls. What was that, you didn't like it? Ok how about we add this to the deal - you won't be able to play the game at all if you haven't repurchased the digital version of the service, and once our digital services is shut down, you'll lose access to your game anyways! Ok now bring us your money and you better not criticize us too much or we will surely find a way to cancel you. Life is good! (for corporate elites).
This game is a licensing nightmare, not only do you have the James Bond 007 license to contend with but also the fact that any remaster would have to separately license the actor's likenesses, along with things like the branded gadgets. It's a lot of time and money to sink into something that anyone not agreeing with could stop pretty much outright. I believe rereleasing the original game without creating new assets was the only way round this. It's a shame but I'm happy just to see a modern rerelease at all.
In the original game you can play with the analog being used for aiming with the C buttons being used for moving (keep telling that to youtubers that call it dated because it has 'tank controls'). It seems likely the Switch version might have that feature as well. It also has dual analog support by using two controllers which I suspect the X1 version tapped into in order to implement the now conventional controls.
1) While it is true that you can’t exactly expect older games to have all the modern conveniences you’d expect, it’s also true that you can’t just expect everyone to just immediately get used to and be okay with some potentially dated mechanics Also, is the Xbox version also emulated, or is it a native port? I really want to know
Because they don't give a shit and allocated the absolute bare minimum of resources to the project in the first place. Most don't play videogames at all. And even if they did at some point in their life, that time has long passed.
More likely that it got blocked by the licence rights holders, which is jointly eon and mgm (now owned by amazon). The xbla version was killed by mgm apparently.
I own the physical version of Rare Replay and was bummed Goldeneye was only going to be released for the Digital Version,.. I just decided to buy it so I could have Goldeneye
I have the physical version and I don't have Game Pass. As soon as I popped in the disc for Rare Replay into my Series X and installed it, GoldenEye popped up in the queue and was right there waiting for me!
@@FoxMcCloudFF7 that's fine I'm not mad at all, but they just kept saying it was only for the Digital Version of Rare Replay So I bought it and really didn't cost that much anyways or take up much space on the HDD I really didn't want to buy the same game twice, but at least I can access it now from the HDD and not have to mess with the disc so it's all good :)
I have a physical copy of Rare Replay and expected GE007 to pop up on my XB yesterday, but no. Oh well. I've already moved on frankly. I played this landmark title to death Christmas 97 & through 98 and so my nostalgia will have to stay there. I don't really miss that 'wobbly hand' aiming system, but - such happy memories of chasing my other half around those stone passages, opening and closing doors as we went (with paintball guns). Nice. 97 was a good Christmas and it was a joy to own an N64 (still have the boxed cartridge). Never seen the film though!
@@AfterBurnerTeirusu Yeah, I was stupid and commented that based on what was said pre-release months ago and the assumption it applied to physical copies as well. The weird thing is, MS allows people to use old 360 and OG xbox discs in order to download digital version of old titles. And now they dont allow us to use an actual and current disc of rare replay to get golden eye? Makes no sense.
I definitely understand locking to 30, I’ve used 1964 at 60fps and both games definitely had trouble, they were mostly fine but then you’d find weird issues in places, most notably any crouching guard would skip the reloading action block, this seems to be fixed in more recent versions of 1964 but I remember back in the day it made Perfect Dark’s Air Force One almost unbeatable since the crouching Mr. Blonde’s would just shoot an endless stream of bullets without reloading or standing up. It’s a real shame none of these are perfect, I really wish they’d finish up the XBLA version, I still think I prefer the look of the original graphics but a remaster like that would be amazing to see, if Perfect Dark could get such a good one so should Goldeneye. I think they could still make these versions work, if they gave both of them a locked 30fps, improved controls, and online multiplayer, but like this they’re so disappointing. But at least thanks to the switch version we do have a way to finally play the game online. I just hope some fans can finish up the 360 version, I think with enough effort that could be ported to run natively on PC and have any unfinished features finished.
MVG, really appreciate you making honest sponsor spots, especially for VPN's. Where most people outright call out false selling points for VPN's which are misleading and damaging, you're always using accurate points and real use cases and mitigations that VPN's can actually provide. Thank you for this, it really shows that you pay attention to detail and it's always been something I've enjoyed from your channel over the past years I've been subbed.
Considering how on/off Nintendo's online capabilities have been compared to Xbox's 9ver the decades it's a surprise that Nintendo included online multiplayer and Xbox did not
Seeing as Perfect Dark is already playable on Xbox 360, One, and Series, i think your theory about licensing being the source of the version compromises makes sense. I hope someone is able to get access to the code for both of these releases and preserves them. It'd be interesting to see the different approaches taken to get the games emulated, what specific ROM dump they're using, how NSO was implemented and if similar functionality could be added to the Xbox version etc etc. Likewise, i hope someone is able to port the XBLA version of the game as homebrew to these consoles in some way if they haven't already
“Licensing hell” is what keeps the whole emulation world alive and well. These massive companies can’t pull it together to remaster a 25 year old video game, and the end result is this half baked product. There’s clearly a market for these older games, and it’s sad that to this day we don’t have a reliable way of officially purchasing and playing these titles. NSO will eventually become defunct some time in the future, and you’ll lose access to this title if you’d subscribed. Emulation just makes all this so much more accessible, and people will continue to pirate ROMs for this reason, and the emu development community will continue to do their incredible work…pro bono.
I agree that once these services disappear, we'll no longer own the game (speaking solely on the switch ver.), and that's all I agree with. Everything else is incredibly petty. The game is fun, challenging and looks and plays just like I remember.
I think that Goldeneye was an amazing game and no matter how hard anybody tries, It will never be the same as it was in 1997 because world has changed. Sometimes it's just better to remember them as they were and move on. In 20 years time we'll be saying the same about something else
this probably isnt the version my cousins and I played local MP on when we were kids, but this is the first time I've gotten hardcore nostalgia for a game
Surprised you talked so little about the worst offender here, which is the sound of the Xbox version, it's compressed, muffled and delayed, immediately noticeable to anyone that has played recently, completely ruined this version for me, hoping it gets patched. The controls on the Switch are literally a non-issue since you can remap them very easily.
Wtf do youtubers mean when they say a relic of a game has not "age well" to "modern standards" It's a 20+ year old game. What is there to age on it? Serious question.
If only this project had been entrusted to the same team who put such care, attention and passion into the re-release of Quake.
Nightdive should’ve handled these ports and the game should’ve released as it’s own separate title for both platforms. Or better yet, -Rare- another studio could’ve spent the time polishing up the XBLA version and ported it to Switch and Xbox assuming they still have the source code.
Nightdive had a pitch that they never revealed, which is upsetting.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I've seen in an interview with Nightdive's CEO that they had tried to remaster GE (just like with Quake). However, with no success.

It was completed, as I understand. Business gotta business.

As you may imagine it wasn't long before we started to work together against this guy (despite it technically being a free for all).
I never liked fps games (besides titanfall and older battlefield) for this reason.
That’s what they should have used in the first place.
A hunch would be maybe that was the part of the licensing issues.
I think it will happen one day. But it seems to take them a long time to deal with licensing issues so it will probably be a decade or more.

The mouse injector is absolutely amazing! Goldeneye with mouse an keyboard is a game changer literally.
He meant officially. It's stupid a company like Nintendo being so anaI about copyright but can't provide a decent port of a game from 20+ years ago.
All I wanted for Goldeneye on Xbox was what they did with Perfect Dark. That version of PD on Xbox is amazing.
If you have a PC you can play it!
That's the same engine I think? So they could have ported GoldenEye to go to 60 FPS. Maybe it's contract restrictions and lack of time since the deal was made, they had to run more simple emulation...
They originally made a prototype version in PD style, but it never came out
what is P D about ?

It frustrates me to no end that giant gaming companies can't reach a fraction of the power of independently developed free emulation.
They can they just won’t
Giant companies: "Why should we spend more time and resources offering a quality product when we can offer the bare minimum and people will still throw their money at us?"
I'd love to blame it on the companies but, sadly, all the people who buy their products are to blame.
They can, but they always throw the "we wanted to replicate the original feeling" as an excuse to not spend more time and money

That's it, the HUD. Because 1964 did that and the original N64 HUD textures don't really look that good on a non-CRT display.
I understand though, I didn't really like the Perfect Dark XBLA remaster as you can't change to the old models and textures.
They could have also done a complete overhaul/update and had a toggle for Classic Mode and now both those looking for old and new can enjoy.
What some folks don’t understand is that we aren’t being ungrateful or finding things to complain about, it’s just that Goldeneye means alot to 90s gamers and has such a huge following. You would expect something a little bit more out a rerelease like this almost 25 years after it’s initial release.
I agree with MVG that the scrapped XBLA should’ve been the basis for this rerelease not have the development between switch and xbox versions spread out.
no it sounds like you're just being undreatful
Indeed, a dual variant of the original N64 version and a modern, true 4k modern version should have been released, with all the relevant license holders getting their heads knocked together until an agreement was reached. If Microsoft can pay billions for Activision and Bethesda. surely something could have been worked out for Goldeneye? Or was Bezos "Blofeld" at Amazon to blame given they now own MGM?
I agree, after seeing the XBLA Version, talking about the Switch/Xbox versions feels like an insult.

Yea damn them for not wasting money to keep 13 people online. You need to be realistic and understand how absurdly low this games population is and would be. The XBLA version was dead within a week.
Or I could be imagining it. It has been forever since I last played it.
The 2 controller setup is still used to speedrun the game on several levels.
You can still recreate this setup on switch using the two joycons, but it’s an annoying process.
I loved the two-controller setup!

What I wished for this game was a graphic remaster, and all the stuff cut from the beta to be put back into the game (boat to the secret island on Dam, all Bonds, etc)
the problem with that was the celebs. Shawn C. wanted stupid amounts of money just to use his picture.

I think there's something to be said for all the wonder and allure it ended up having, adding to all those playground rumours and internet myths that games had back in these days.
I appreciate this comment because with the stock controls the game just isn’t any fun.

Can't believe standards have been lowered so much that we got people defending a game that was already completed and has legendary status with nostalgia, but sure let's settle for jank instead of giving MGM & the other publishers feedback given how borked it is.

Yep, I noticed this immediately in side-by-side comparisons. I found video from the N64 original and it looks like the Xbox version is more faithful in this regard.
it's a mapping error from the emulation.
Given their track record with ports and online efforts, Code Mystics should have gotten access to Rare’s XBLA version and the source code. I wouldn’t be surprised if they added rollback netcode like what they are doing with SNK’s latest games (half joke). It would have both satisfy those with nostalgia and those who want a more definitive experience, if Nintendo is to blame.
At least Perfect Dark has online MP.
And that's 13 years old, pathetic...

You're right but people will bitch nomatter what. We're lucky to get it as good as it is.

I believe Tom Scott changed the VPN sponsorship game.
I'm suprised Nightdive Studio didn't remake this one. The did a good job with Quake and Blood. Imagine this on the Kex engine.
Kex Engine was also used for the awesome Turok ports
Great video MVG. I'm glad I still have my cartridge and N64 sitting ready to go when ever I want to fire it up.
I've still got a CRT in my bedroom ready to go! I should probably plug the N64 in :P
@@phattjohnson Same! I've become such a purist as Iv'e gotten older lol.
THIS. ALL OF THIS
Doom changed everything, & so did Quake & so did Goldeneye. They are absolutely timeless games & help definite modern fps of to this day.
Nawl..007 deserved a remake
I noticed some issues when played it on series s but it was nice to see the game back. Especially with controls on Xbox
the game is playable but its a hassle to setup the custom controller profile on the switch settings every time you want to play
The Switch allows users to save controller profiles, thankfully.
this probably isnt the version my cousins and I played local MP on when we were kids, but this is the first time I've gotten hardcore nostalgia for a game
I mean its a port/emulation so technically it the exact same game
Surprised you talked so little about the worst offender here, which is the sound of the Xbox version, it's compressed, muffled and delayed, immediately noticeable to anyone that has played recently, completely ruined this version for me, hoping it gets patched.
The controls on the Switch are literally a non-issue since you can remap them very easily.
Wtf do youtubers mean when they say a relic of a game has not "age well" to "modern standards" It's a 20+ year old game. What is there to age on it? Serious question.
And I played the hell out of that game in my youth.
