Thank you for this excellent series Peter. Matchbox's demise was indeed a great loss to the kit-building community.
Peter this brings back some memories! The only two Matchbox Orange Range dioramas I bought were the 1/76 French Char B1 Bis & Renault FT17, which was interesting for the very unusual looking tanks and the ruined town scene. Most importantly for me was the 1/72 Long Range Desert Group diorama with the Willys Jeep & Chevrolet truck. During WWII my uncle served with the LRDG in Libya; latterly in Italy and France when attached to the SAS.
I really wanted the 1/76 Monty’s Beford truck and scout car, however by the time I saved up the model shop had sold out. Drat and double drat! What’s surprising is the other diorama kits Matchbox manufactured, which I have no idea they made until this video. I believe that your forecast for Matchbox models, if the plastic kits division had carried on could have been up there with Tamiya etc. What a huge shame.

You're going to have to cut Revell Gmbh a bit of slack. The Swastika is actually a proscribed symbol in Germany, so it would be against the law, for a German manufacturer to recreate it, even for the sake of accuracy. Really enjoyed this trip down memory lane. Brought back a load of memories for me.
Yep, it's not just Germany, it's a bunch of countries. You can google the list on wikipedia.
There are a couple of Decal manufacturers that produce sheets of swastika's for the serious luftwaffe modellers
Great. Loved that blast from the past. Pity Revell haven't reissued the Stuart, Panzer III, or Panther in decades...
the Morris diorama was amongst my fav kit builds of the 70s, shame they stoped I have Montys caravan in the stash

Thanks for this, Peter! I had ALL of the 1/76 Kits (except the 1988 Challenger) and painted them properly. And i didn't get one of the first issues...
Hello again Peter, I wanted to share the main reason why I bought the Matchbox Armour was 1, the artwork looked very similar to the Boys comic Commando. 2 Because you could make a dio just like the stories in the comic & the Morris MKII was my first kit. They were brilliant, fun & educational. I do wish they came back in their original boxings. 😀

Thanks for this series, Peter. It brought back so many memories of better times. I was lucky enough to build all the Orange sets and my favourites were the 17pdr and LRDG. Worst was the tank transporter - important vehicle but so dull! Last one I made was the Char b and FT17, which was a brave choice (but would have been better with an H35/39 or R35 instead of the 17). Matchbox will always have a special place in my heart. They appeared at the right time for me as I was starting to make my own kits and their quality made it so much easier. I think a lot of newer manufacturers have forgotten that you need to produce stuff kids can knock together in an afternoon as well as 1/24 scale B29s with 20,000,000 parts.
I know one thing that stopped me modelling back then, (other than having to start working for a living), was the cost of paint seemed to be getting far too high, when your kit cost a quid, so did a couple of Humbrol paints. Something that is starting to become an issue these days, especially post Brexit.
You have a nice stash of lamps.
I remember getting Montys caravan as a kid, and I even remember what day. It was Charles and Diana's wedding day and im sure it was to keep me quiet while mum and dad watched it on telly :)
31stJuly 1981…Weds I didn't have so much fun though and had to attend a boring street party with loads of kids way younger than me, and no Matchbox..Sigh! 😒
Thanks Peter for the ride down memory lane to my childhood. Like you I would go to the local newsagent and grab a Matchbox kit with my pocket money. Great fun and even better builds. The late 70's was a great time to discover scale models.

I had those sets when they came out and loved them, but haven't been able to find any in great condition but would be delighted to review any nice set of those and return to you...(Honest!) 😜😈😂...(No, but I really will return your property. ☺️)

The models were good for miniatures games and the scenic bases were great for adding a few things to and using as scenic items for the games.
I really enjoyed that these Matchbox kits built up sturdy, were reasonably detailed, and the figures looked good.

conclusion about Matchbox :
- they made kits witch are still the only one on the market today : Do-18, Skyservant, Stranraer, Privateer, Heyford, Spitfire Mk.22 1/32, Lysander 1/32, Puma 1/32, Sea venom 1/32, tiger Moth floatplane 1/32, Hunter 2 seater, P-12E, G-91Y, Seafox; Buckeye, vickers wellesley, Norseman, Twin Otter, and of course armor kit with diorama..... CRASY !!!
- you said that matchbox should have stopped to make cars, and only kits, but why did they made the Corvette Flower in 1/72 ???? this kit was so expensive at the time, I just could only dream for it. I'm sure the energy needed to make this kit was be the same that 10 or 20 Purple or Orange 1/72 airplane kits.
- The happiest is Revell : easy money since 30 years with zero investment
Concludes? What about the ships, motorcycles and the cars?😂

So many wonderful memories of childhood and model making. You have made many older modellers very happy and perhaps a little melancholy too!
It's also (joking aside) lovely to see someone with a collection that they are truly passionate about. You absolutely radiate excitement and happiness whenever you talk about Matchbox and I love that!

The Caravan came out in 1980 - I bought it while I was on holiday in York that summer, and it was a new release at the time. It's a Leyland Retriever chassis, not a Bedford.

Awesome Matchbox March Peter. Loved the Matchbox format and have been picking up my favourite kits again and especially the Orange vehicle sets. I favour the Morris like you, but absolutely love the LRDG set. Keep up the great work 👍

I didn't have any of the orange armour, but my God, they look beautiful! I think that I'd like to get hold of the Morris truck, great looking kit, and the diarama looks to be the best they ever did!
As always a great review Peter. Some nice examples of the Orange range. I had the first kit you showed, the Morris truck, jeep and gun; the German halftrack, gun and motorcycle with sidecar; and the British LRDG truck and jeep. Can't remember if they were early or later kits. Sadly they are all gone now. I almost always kept and still keep the front of the boxes because of the box art. But I've built so many model kits that around the turn of the century I decided to throw away the box art of the models I no longer had... Did the same thing again two years ago. Maybe I should have made an exception for the Matchbox kits.
Absolutely agree Peter regarding the decals. They could make them split in two or more parts but prefer to remove them to appease a tiny minority or to virtue signal. The answer is obviously aftermarket transfers from ebay etc and the same for the afrika korps palm trees..

Very moving recollections of ye ol good times :) You didn't have the B1 bis + RT 17 and the Mk19 Tk Transporter at hand ? I have the Mk19, yet somewhat painted...
I intend to finish several dioramas with or Matchbox related by feb 2025. Close to "achieve" one with an ExtraTech Tetrarch and some ESCI/Revell Red Devils on the set of the Morris+17 pdr reiteration by revell.. Next and allready going are several ones around the Normandy campaign, Brit' side(Humber +Sherman Vc , some Airfix models, too). A little further along will be "Market Garden" with the Morris tractor+17 pdr on display towards Oosterbeek.

If you ever get the chance to buy the British 'Desert Rat Recon unit set don't you dare pass it up. It's the only one I ever brought and made in the late 70's using Humbrol Enamels.. The amount of detail include in the model is unbelievable, that if you get one piece out of place there's not enough room to fit the rest. I'd kept the model and only bined it in 2922 as i had to suddenly had to slim down my collection. Anyway the emergency never appeared so it was all in vain, I still rue the day I bined that model, and all the times I"ve pick up one of those Matchbox armour kits , especially those orange series only to put it back as it was outside of what I was collecting. The only manufacture doing something similar to the diorama thing, is Zvezda in there Art of tactics 1/72 scale figures, even if they are aimed at gaming and are push-fit they are actually very good little models in their own right. If you ever see them especially the German motorcycle and side-car try one you won't be disappointed.. You often mention the box artwork on Matchbox, but the Zvezda and Roden 1/72 armour artwork is really good. give them a butchers if you can. thanks for the Matchbox March and I'll look forward to another one next year.

The Swastika on the original is incorrect. It should be at 45 degrees, not vertical.

The Swastika was specific to the Nazi Party. None of the manufacturers were.
Exactly. Seems some people did a good job at washing their company image clean post war.
I asked about the use of the swastika in Germany and I was told, if it is considered art like a painting say of a Messerschmitt-109 perhaps you can put the swastika on the tail, but models are not considered art work so you are not allowed to use the swastika on any model.
But box art is surely...art? Strange isn't it?
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab especially i guess if its existing art from the 70s like the hanomag? I know in Switzerland they had ww2 planes in a Swiss transport museum with swiss markings on the tails. ( Though think their air force did fly re-enginend ( with merlins) German ww2 planes post war.).

I hate the new art box covers, erasing history. It won’t bring back the 50 million dead. Stalin did the same, airbrushing photographs.
