Just in case anyone has weird anxiety about the shark suffocating because it isn’t moving, don’t worry! Zebra sharks don’t need ram ventilation like some other sharks do. In fact, they often lay down on reefs and stuff like that, using their strong throat muscles to keep breathing. IDK about anyone else, but it bothered me so much I had to google it
Yep, I was thinking, this shark is not looking for affection, it was simply curious about the diver who then proceeded to embrace the shark. Great Whites become incapacitated when upside down and I am still convinced this shark is in a state of incapacitation until the diver lets go. I mean, “Sure, hahaha, the shark wants to cuddle.” 😕
@@melindaatkinson3585 you may be right. What you’re talking about is called tonic immobility. While the reason for this response is not very well known, it is believed to be related to things such as mating and defense. Though it’s observed in many shark species, including the zebra shark, not all are capable of it. It is a common method researchers use to collect data on sharks while minimizing injury to both the shark and the researcher. It doesn’t hurt the shark in any way as long as it is only held in the position for less than approximately 15 minutes. It just puts the shark in a state of disorientation for a short period of time, and it will soon return to a normal state once righted. So even then, no cause for concern. :)
Funny thing: Zebra shark: has stripes as pup, turns into spots as adult. Leopard shark: has spots as pup, turns into stripes (thick stripes with spots around) as adult
Fun Fact: A lot of sharks need to keep moving forward in order to breathe properly. Zebra sharks have the ability to pump water over their gills, either through their mouth or through the large spiracle behind each eye.
Even without that ability, any shark can still breathe at least a little bit while still, because water has currents and is moving itself over the gills
There are several species that have this ability. Fun fact: when you turn a shark upside down it places them into a state of catatonia, almost like being hypnotised.
Katy Leanne I know it’s their nose and mouth I meant that it’s on their stomach to me flipping a shark over is their stomach and then flipping them back over to their original state is their back if that makes sense? Lmao

Shark:"Meee hehehe!"
Just in case anyone has weird anxiety about the shark suffocating because it isn’t moving, don’t worry! Zebra sharks don’t need ram ventilation like some other sharks do. In fact, they often lay down on reefs and stuff like that, using their strong throat muscles to keep breathing. IDK about anyone else, but it bothered me so much I had to google it
Yes, and thank you for the info!
@@vanitas7441 that’s it, tonic immobility! Sorry to be such a Karen. Regardless, cleaning fish tanks must be a cool job. 😁

Fun Fact: A lot of sharks need to keep moving forward in order to breathe properly. Zebra sharks have the ability to pump water over their gills, either through their mouth or through the large spiracle behind each eye.
Thanks! I was wondering if it was holding its breath for the belly rubs lol. Glad to know it wasn't.
Ohh this explains a lot, thank you!
Even without that ability, any shark can still breathe at least a little bit while still, because water has currents and is moving itself over the gills
So they breathe like 👁💨👁💨
There are several species that have this ability. Fun fact: when you turn a shark upside down it places them into a state of catatonia, almost like being hypnotised.
