Appreciate your effort but your method is cutting the tree down in order to get an apple. There are small holes on the exterior of both ends of each light cover that you can insert a tool, such as a hex key (Allen wrench) around 3/32 into and quite safely pop them off/out. I didn't know about them either until I looked up the bulbs to see if they were typical, standard, traditional, garden variety, if-you've-seen-one-you've-them-all, tag light bulbs, (the same ones that have been utilized for 50+ years) and a UA-cam video demonstrating the exceptionally easy removal process came up in my search. You can remove both covers, replace both bulbs and do it all from outside. It literally took me about 45 seconds to replace both bulbs. 👍🏻

Take this video offline. It's the only one that pops up in a search and thanks to you I just broke both pieces that clip into the license plate area. You didn't even show whether you pushed them out the front or out of the back, literally the most important part and it was excluded!
don't blame him because you didn't watch through the whole vid before trying to replace the light, at 3:57 he shows you how to put it back in and says "you just got to do it in reverse" from that you should be able to use common sense on how he took it out.
It is not necessary to go through al this to replace the bulb. Pry the clear plastic cover off from the outside of the trunk, pry out the bad bulb and pop in the new bulbs( there are 2 outlets).
i just bought these LED lights on ebay that are the whole fixture, you can't take it apart it seems, not just the bulb. i had to take off the 4 nuts that hold the screws that hold the metal trunk cover with the toyota logo on it on. i couldn't figure out how to get the thing off but loosening it was enough to be able to fit the LED fixture inside. otherwise impossible to fit the fixture into the slots from the outside because the metal cover is blocking the way.
yes you can just pull the bulb out, i think? i had one side where the bulb is exposed and that's probably why it went bad and you can just pull it out. hmm not sure about the other side, where the bulb cover is still on, though.

On mine it doesn’t even seem the bulb casing is designed to come out that way. I think the bulb cover is supposed to be pried off.

lol yeah i just broke one but you do have to pull them outside, there is no way to fit it through inside.

is it really necessary to take off the backing for this bulb? you can't just unhook it from outside?
yes you can just pull the bulb out, i think? i had one side where the bulb is exposed and that's probably why it went bad and you can just pull it out. hmm not sure about the other side, where the bulb cover is still on, though.
No need to do such a messy job - simply pop out the cover and change the bulb would do :)
