It really doesn’t surprise me at all. The way test rugby is played these days, it’s actually a disadvantage to have the ball, especially in your own half, where every 5-6 phases you’re coughing up 3 points from turnover penalties. South Africa got through the knock out stages of the World Cup by having far less possession than their opposition and less running meters, which tells you all you need to know. As a spectator product test rugby is crap to watch. Kicking the ball until someone makes a mistake is not sport.
Jones did exactly the same thing in 2016-19. Only really focussed on building an attacking structure in the final year of that cycle.
Doesn’t surprise me one bit. If you break the game down into it’s constituent parts (set piece, kicking, defending, running attack etc) then ‘ running attack’ is not high on the list of importance. Read the book ‘moneyball’.
@@iambeowulf9325the playing without the ball approach was ultimately Jones down fall. They executed well in 2019 (still didn’t work every time) but I think Ireland, France and Scotlands advanced their attacks so much since that we struggled to compete. You could argue that selection etc has played into it but these teams hold on to the ball enough to score a bonus point most games, whereas the kick pressure game is designed more for low scoring contests.

Look at the Stokes/Mcullen attitude around opener Zack Crawley leading into the Ashes. The media were constantly focusing on his failings and faults as an opening batsman. Captain and Management just repeatedly said “he’s our man, he can do things other players just can’t” and he proved them right, that must feel incredible as a player. Could you imagine how many England rugby players would benefit from that same attitude. Pick people on what they can do, Dont leave them out for what they are missing.

Yup. Another penalty might have been awarded 10metres nearer the posts - but it was the referee's first 6Nations game.
A loss is a loss, and no team should want to lose. But, I rather lose and see potential than to win by a point and see no improvement - at least we have hope now, as opposed to just beige the years before. Scotland beat us handily but can’t wait to see the improvements.
We got beat, we were expecting to get beat and we played lije shit apart from the first 15 minutes.
You played well for ten minutes, lovely try. Then a falcon happened, they realised they didnt have the skills, reverted to type, kicked it and went for penalties. No improvement at all

Brilliant . Great positivity about England . Loved this show today with Jonny may superb. Tinds always good and bored now of Haskell and his stories . I love a laugh but Haskell overdoes it and I like to hear good analysis on England and rugby. Though hask in fairness is worth a listen when talking seriously about the game .
Overall a great show, guys, and some brillant insights about how it must feel inside the Englad camp. However, is there a reason why you repeatedly (each time, I think, bar one) referred to Immanuel Feyi-Waboso as "Waboso" but Henry Arundell as "Henry"?
It is great to a proper rugby discussion not ruined by Haskells smart arse wise cracking interruptions.
England possess tools which have the potential to inflict some damage on us (Ireland), but at the same time, our (Ireland) lads just look so comfortable in every aspect of the game... saying that, it could still go either way; you just never know with the Six Nations!
Just to touch on English club Rugby - I think the RFU should seriously consider creating four-six franchise teams and joining the URC. If you look at other models, the most successful teams in the World, have been nations where the majority of the starting XV play for one or two teams - New Zealand (Crusaders/Chiefs), Ireland (Leinster/Munster), France (Toulouse), South Africa (Stormers/Sharks), Wales (Ospreys/Scarlet's) and England when it was all Saracens/Leicester; I think if English Rugby consolidated all their resources into four-six teams, they'd be in a much better place - there has already been a noticeable improvement in performances at European level with the drop from 13 to 10 teams!

I suppose the issue with that franchise model is - would Leicester/Sarries/Bath/Northampton/Harlequins (clubs with the biggest historical fanbases) be happy with that, being turned into essentially feeders for the national game, as is the way in Ireland. I don't think they would be.
A @limbothytimothy a very valid point as is visible with the Welsh sides , gelling them together didn't real work and I'd suspect that the diehard supporters of the various Prem sides would be more than disgruntled
What tools? Stop overrating English players. It is a chronic disease that plagues some England fans and pundits. The prem is not as good as you think it is.
@@limbothytimothy Clubs in their current form are essentially feeders for the national game, but I hear what you're saying. The franchise model worked for Wales when they created the four regions back in 2003; they won three grand slams and the URC five times in the space of 10 years, but it failed to attract the supporters... I still think if you took the top six teams in the prem and moved them over to the URC, English Rugby would be in a better place.
Arundel's problem was that the half backs followed the game plan never to pass the ball anywhere near him. I would get Marcus back asap, preferably starting but otherwise replacing Finn, with the intention of Marcus following the conservative game plan which includes taking any opportunity he sees in front of him.
I would like to see Chandler getting more game time, I think he could be a Lions bolter.
Let me explain why Arundell was not the answer and I'll make it very brief. He never ever, ever came off his wing looking for the ball and his kick chase was totally and utterly ineffective. If he learns his trade in France and comes back maybe he will be an addition to the team but I personally th8nk he has played his last game for England. I'll also add that Marcus Wow is not the answer, if Borthwick had given Fin Smith the Italy and Wales game to bed in you would know why, he is the most complete fly half in England by a country mile and no I am not a Saints fan. Agree on Cunningham-South and would add Feyi-Waboso to the starting team against Ireland sadly Feyi isn't available as he is going back to Uni for an exam.
@@Dickie2702completely agree - Ashton, Nowell, Watson.. they came off their wings looking for work, tracked the ball well, chased and defended well. The complete packages. Arundell is a domestic level winger with great physical attributes that can be easily exploited in that realm.. completely different at Test level. And yes, DVDM is an anomaly in that regard.. but Arundell is not that sort of carrier.
@@Alex-mj5dv If you really want to bore yourself rigid watch Arundell in the RWC games he played, he got to the catcher on kick chase load cof times but I'm afraid he lacked the courage to contest. You can train all you like but you can't make a player braver. Sadly I really had high hopes for him but he was lacking. Contrast that to Feyi-Waboso who was involved in multiple phases before orchestrating his own try, to me this lad is thd real deal now.
Arundel's first big test - against Ireland last year - he was completely outshone by Watson, who played an immaculate game for a test match winger. Arundel tried 3 counter attacks, made good ground in one, and got turned over in their half on the other two. His defensive work was decidedly average and his kick chase was also very average. He is definitely one to watch for the future but acting like getting the ball in his hands will instantly create tries against Elite opposition is fanciful to say the very least.
@Dickie2702 Yeah if Arundell played regular test rugby, the top teams would just attack his channel and drop bombs on him all day long with big wingers/loose forwards chasing. It would be a massacre really. He is pretty good with ball in hand and very quick but nowhere near defensively good enough for test rugby and lacks the work rate too. Maybe his stint in France will change that.
15:43 would be interesting to see a slightly less ever changing squad. All for testing combinations but it’s very hard to get an objective view of an individual with so many changes around them.
They could try selecting their best players in their strongest positions.
I've heard the right players make a more successful team that the best ones. Probably not from anyone important though...

I'm done watching England until SB has gone. We seem to have the most tactically boring Managers across Football & Rugby who are simply afraid to utilize the talent they have at their disposal.
Why are they talking about the defence coach when the defence has never been the problem for England?
I'm a Scot and I would say they are making progress. But as a Scot who.lives in England and is involved in the youth development at our club, I would say that the youth development and scouting is not the best these days. Case in point a young lad in our U15s has great potential talent but he's not especially large at the moment. He's been totally overlooked by the regional development organization who select lads on their size and strength.
Meanwhile he's got a Scottiah mother and last summer was in Scotland at an SRU development camp...
As to Saturday: blitz defense vs the Scottish back line? It's high risk.
England have to re organize their management root and branch great partnerships are not selected they are developed. You.wont build a Scottish quality midfield from a teamsheet, it isn't fantasy rugby.
The whole system needs top to bottom reform. There is little point in having vast resources if you lack the skill and ability to exploit those resources.
And Johnny May, England didn't 'gift' Scotland the game.. they made it easy but they were beat... sometimes you get beaten by better teams.

The key there is consistency of selection. If you keep chopping and changing you'll never allow players to build into the team.
Borthwick needs to set a plan of how he wants to play the game, build a team around that and keep it consistent. Back your strategy, come hell or high water.

Complete agree with Alex. Steve needs to come out and just be honest about it. It's a change and it takes time to find the right solutions. We all know it but until it's said everyone can continue to ask WTF about certain things. Gats has done it and it manages expectations. Eddie didn't do it in AUS, thought he was mightier than the media and it sank him.

The stats kinda back him up; more possession, more territory, much more carry meters, more passes, more carries, fewer tackles made, higher scrum success, ditto line out success, half as many penalties conceded. Other stats favour Scotland of course (tries and turnovers anyone?) but I don't think you should just dismiss what Tins said.

Listening to Johnny May, if I didn't know any better I'd have thought England had played a great game and won the match.
You summed it well. I would say also we need to get rid of the expectation of beating Ireland. Our goals should be to get our game working, consistency and then building on that core, and then putting back a development plan which allows players to slot in as Eng progress.
Remember what Ireland did to Scotland in the world cup so for England the head scratching continues, I'm afraid
I remember everyone talking about how close it it going to be but we knew there was a good chance Ireland would just smoke them. And that's what happened 36 - 0 by 55 minutes or something, and Ireland started pulling players off.
Lose the next 2 and Borthwick surely has to go. He's taking great club players and turning them into poor internationals who are playing within themselves. So naive to think an attack coach only 2 years out the game can cut it at international level.
Get in a big hitting international coach with a proper identity and way of playing that suits the players we have available, and give him a 3 year run to the wc.

Nice to see some spot on analysis. England bossed 78 mins of that game and turned off to concede 3 incredibly soft tries. Sure they have to fix that but they can take the positives from other 78 mins.

Selection for England is so tough right now as consistency is great but also don’t really want to consistently pick middling players. This just isn’t a quick fix, Steve has been unlucky with injuries really otherwise it would have been Mitchell, Smith, Lawrence, Slade, Freeman, Daly/Waboso, Steward/Furbank most games this 6 nations
Problem England have is that we have lots of good players but few (currently) World class. Different to 2003 where team picked itself. You can’t just pick someone for next few years full in knowledge that they could fall down pecking order. No.8 good example as lots of talent. Borthwick needs a structure that allows easy switching of players. Only way to achieve that is to be less rigid in approach to allow more instinct
@@jamespeters7775 yeah that’s very true not many clear out and out - this is my position - players right. I do genuinely think Borthwick is trying to go with a more dynamic heads up attack. Just such early days and Wiggy is really the kicking coach not the attack coach, the in we are a few pieces short of the puzzle but I have faith it will continue to improve.
I do find the lads, especially Tinds, too diplomatic. It’s always about keeping faith with the last players picked when, occasionally, you have to be more cutthroat.
Tinds in particular knows when we were good, SCW wasn’t scared to drop established players for the benefit of the team.
Furbank was a mistake, Slade has done nothing, Roots has had his moment in Rome.
Stick with the team when you’ve made the correct decisions.
One of the reasons we got spanked in the RWC final of 2019 is we didn’t change the team up going into that game. Even crazy Eddie admitted that.
PS Tinds comments on the Italy penalty illustrate that he is possibly the worst pundit out there. Comes across as not even knowing the laws.
It’s quite simple when you have talents as special as Arundel or Fey-Waboso you play them, you give them confidence to go and express themselves and give them the security that they are a long term vision and build their experience in international rugby.. It is so tiring hearing the same narrative of them being ‘impact players’ off the bench.. Play your best players!! It’s simple..
9. Mitchell, 10. F.Smith, 11. Waboso, 12. Dingwall, 13. Freeman, 14. Arundell, 15. M.Smith/Furbank/Steward would be nice to see this in the near future.

@y3ne4eg6r would prefer Fin Smith gets a couple of caps to see how he goes i feel he has the structure in attack and defense over Marcus but we wont find that out till they get more caps. I like having Marcus as either starter or off the bench for both the 10 and 15 position like how New Zealand use Mckenzie. Theres nothing to stop them selecting Marcus to kick either for pens and trys regardless of position.

England had 750 caps to Scotland's 600, the narrative around "inexperience" is mental.
Fact is England played very poorly bar the first 20 mins. Not a transitional team just a poor one. Coach, tactics players. Have I think Ireland, NZ x3 and SA x 2 coming up. Only real potential results are France and Japan. Running rugby and a blitz defence in NZ and SA means shedding bucketloads of points. Not a schedule to blood new players. Same old I am afraid.

You'd think Scotland stole this game at the death by a point instead of looking pretty comfortable in defense after the second try.
I think England need to stick with it, you can't have another world cup cycle with a new coach coming in with two or even just one season under the belt. Look at it this way, Farrell was already a part of Schmidt's backroom staff so he was already part of the system, covid aside Ireland really struggled in 2020 and for the first part of the 2021 six nations. Journalists were calling for Farrell to be moved on but senior players like O'Mahony and Sexton were 100% behind their coach which seems to be the way it is with England now. The mood around Ireland wasn't great, UNTIL we beat England in the last round of the 6N and that completely changed the tone.

England A played a 2nd/3rd string Portugal team. I really would not read too much into that game at all. Portugal are involved in tier 2 version of 6Ns so they put out a scratch team.
Some ramblings from a Scotland supporter and why I think England aren't in that bad of a position - we've been in a worse position and I'll explain why I think things aren't bad for England. I've watched my team lose - a lot. When I was a kid Scotland were pretty decent, obviously won the last 5N but it was a bit ropey, but the 90s were alright including a grand slam. We then went through an awful time post the game turning professional, I'm talking couldn't fill the stadium apart from England games. It was so bad they only held 2 autumn tests at Murrayfield and even one of them they didn't open the upper half of the west stand. The 3rd fixture was held at a somewhat random football club around the country to try and drum up some regional support, I want to say I think the last time was it Pittordrie (Aberdeen FC) and probably 10 years or so ago.
Things were OK for the 6N though generally speaking but the Italy game would be fairly quiet too. It's bittersweet as it meant there were zero queues, none of this queue for some cans, you went to 'draught' bars because it was as quick and a better pint. Food stalls were interesting and again, no queues. Many would buy cheap tickets and just walk down to better seats. It was like a midweek club game. They also (they SRU) brought in season tickets, this was a little over 10 years ago (I think). Now at the time the benefit for us was really, it just put the games in our calendar. You didn't struggle to get tickets, even against the all blacks. So now we have tickets to every game, including 4 autumn tests and they generally always sell out (apart from summer tests before a world cup).
Anyway, no other home nation does this season ticket as far as I'm aware. Most fans, especially English and Irish (Aviva is small after all), struggle to get tickets. So I think you have to look at the what the problem is. Scotland had poor coaching, the SRU was/is a mess and the pool of players was very small and often players picked because of the school they went to. About the time of Andy Robinson being head coach, things changed. I don't think he was supported well enough but he was vocal enough the SRU finally saw things had to change. All teams have foreign born players, arguably 2 of the best performers for Ireland at the weekend aren't Irish. England prior to this dip their most capped hooker of all time and their captain Dylan Hartley was about as English as a mushroom risotto. But Scotland stretches this the most, they just don't have young players getting into the game - albeit they're now actually doing better (numbers wise) than countries like Wales for young females.
Again, anyway. England, does have problems, sure. But it's nowhere anything like what Scotland went through. They still have a pool of very capable players. They're not whipping boys, it's not like Italy at their worst or Ireland in the 5N where it's almost every year a 5th place finish. Get the tactics right and something that works and the selection right, they're challenging Ireland. Get some of it a little bit right and they're coming second in the 6N.
People are talking about how the Italians are improving or how this Scottish team should be winning 4 games. But Scotland's about to lose a several key players before the next world cup and with no one really snapping at their heels. As much as I've loved Scotland winning the Calcutta cup, year after year. We know England is probably going to get a top 3 finish in 2025 for the 6N. Get good seeding for the WC pools draw in the following January.
I think this England squad being beaten the way they are, is just a positive for the 6N. It means the other teams are closer - right now. But I also think England have a lot of what some of the other nations do not have. What England lack right now, can be fixed.

Scottish rugby suffered because of the Stone age beliefs of the people that ran the game. They refused to allow professional players so Scotland had amateurs playing against professionals. Hence Scotland's poor results during that time.

tbf the pack looked good, Scotland looked very up for it and matched us blow for blow. Like Johnny said that first 20 minutes was an exact blueprint of what he wants from us.

@@limbothytimothy I keep seeing this inferring England stopped playing the way they did in 1st 20 mins. They didn't mate. Something else happened: Scotland adjusted. In last year's 6Ns Scotland had a fabulous 20 mins v Ireland at Murrayfield. Then? Ireland adjusted and squeezed Scotland right out of the game.

It showed as well because too often we were standing still when we had the ball and then players were throwing a pass in hope rather than as part of a tactical plan/strategy!! That inevitably contributed to the errors because minds looked foggy in attack and not clear…

The way too test if an England fans actually knows rugby is too ask them about Arundell. If they say he’s amazing and it’s a travesty he not being picked. Than you know they don’t actually know the game and simply parrot what the media tell them. Arundell is a young player with great speed and attacking threat in the broken field. But much of his games is just bad. His work rate is awful, his kick chase lacklustre, very poor at working off his wing, in defence look like he doesn’t know which continent he’s on half the time. If you watch racing now you see he’ll pull out a brilliant try and then concede another because he’s out of position or even worse just lazy. Now he’s young he will develop his game, and get better but on form he didn’t not deserve to start for England. The difference between arundel and Immanuel is that Immanuel is already better at the factors mentioned then arundell is. However he’s still not where a top international winger would ideally be in these respects, and that’s why he’s not been getting starts. So many times media just shoe horn players into stereotypes. Oh arundell and Immanuel are young and powerful wingers so that means they’re basically the same player right ?! No. They’re very different Immanuel is already at least 1-2 years ahead of arundell in player development
On the money. Wingers shouldn't have to be fed the bad and rely on others to look good. Looking for work, decision-making, positioning, defence - all factors. Arundell needs to focus less on the flashy stuff and more on the weaknesses i.e. dirty work. Could transform him into a truly great player.
If you wanna play quick ball it's simple just play a quins / saints team. Cohesion sorted. Forwards seem sorted though but I'd just go gung ho and drop a Northampton team lol
Lol it is nowhere near the simple. Just because something works in the Prem does not mean it will work at test match level. This exact thinking is why so many English players that do well in the Prem get grossly overrated.

England need a specialist No 8. The back row is not balanced. Ben Earl is a great player but not a No 8.

I saw improvements in our overall play against Scotland, however, the handling and unforced errors were in in unbearable l tipi goes by Lawrence throwing the ball out of play. There are still better players to come into this team but some of the attack tactics are infuriating. When something doesn’t work, stop doing it aka kicking the ball but not into touch, the Scot’s were lapping it up. Also how easy we implode momentum is infuriating. England has more players than Ireland, doesn’t mean they have more good players. The players being churned out by Leinster and Munster at the moment is frightening. Irish u20s won grand slam in 2019, were denied it in 2020 by Covid and won it in 2022 and 2023 and could possibly win it again this year if they beat England. England can’t bully Ireland anymore when Ireland are producing athletes like Mccarthy, Edogbo, Sheehan. Think it may be a good few years again before England get a win over Ireland
Have you been watching this years u20 England? They are huge - Ireland no disrespect have no other sport that they compete on a global level seriously, that being said England has a massive group of players, but until we stop having a majority of players being dominated by the public(private schools ) we will continue to miss talent. Not sure it is the same for Ireland?

I am Welsh, and for me, England are such a frustrating team. Many talented players, but the coaching and strategy is woeful, and England have been under performing for so many years, it is just a waste of talent.
Wales were similar when Gatland left, we just drifted, and we have nothing like the resources England do, in terms of the number of players, and so on.
It is all about Culture, and if England had approached their philosophy, the way Ireland have, maybe they would be in the same place Ireland are at present, probably the best team in the world.
England and Wales at present, are just not anywhere near Ireland.
Itoje is a very fine player in a very mediocre team, and it seems to me any player with any flair or natural talent, isn't encouraged to use it for England.

Love the positivity, but no evidence that the coaches have the ability or experience to manage this situation and create a new team or way of playing. I feel really sorry for Englands players who look confused in both attack and defence. An example of this is: if Furbank was the answer at fullback, I.e. play a different way, why didnt the coaches know this and plan for this from the start of the tournament?

The comment about lots of good players is missing the point.
The issue is they’re ONLY good. Thats why the chopping and changing occurs. If we had more genuinely class players they would be picked every week and the relationships would form.
Arbitrarily picking the same set of fairly average players in the name of consistency might make them a little better than chopping and changing, but won’t make them actually GOOD.
