What We Loved but Forgot

  • I think I sacrificed a week’s worth of sleep for this, but I feel like the tidal waves of creativity come so rarely that it’s difficult to let them go to waste. Also I think I just enter this state of mind where I can’t think of anything else, so it also goes hand in hand.
This is based on a piece I made back in 2008, and even though it’s old I feel like it had this cozy feeling to it that I wanted to capture in 3D. Ironically, I started this a couple of months back, and at one point my textures just weren’t working together because I had so many workflows from substance painter, designer and photoshop that simply weren’t lining up, and I was close to scrapping it. Eventually a friend of mine saw the project and encouraged me to finish it, and that was the little push I needed to get the ball rolling again.
I learned a damn lot from this as well. I finally wrestled trimsheets that’s been on my mind for a long time, modeled my first car (really was stalling to make one), and then I learned how integrate speedtree vegetation with my own leaves and make them interact with my models. I also just really went all out with vegetation here, I loved making all that variation. My mom always loved plants for as long as I can remember, so I was always growing up in these almost half-forest gardens, and while I just found it fun as a kid, I’m getting to the age where I guess I’m becoming my parents and part of that is loving plants. Except I’m awful at keeping them alive, so at least in 3D they can’t wither unless I texture them to do so.
I also made chickens. A decision that came to me at 2 AM, and somehow became my favorite element of the scene. Not only because they’re thicc ass chickens, but because I feel like I’m slowly getting more secure in my 3D cohesiveness where I like mixing some parts that weigh more towards realism, together with other elements that are very stylized. And I love being in that space in between.
