@Abiodun, you are on point. Baba Ogunde had a good and impeccable command of English. His accent was also good. The Nigerian educational system was excellent in those days. They had British teachers, and education was valued in those days. You have to study to pass. Things have fallen apart in all sectors in Nigeria. I hope the next generations get it right. In 1993, Prof. Wole Soyinka spoke about a lost generation. Many people attacked him!! The professor was correct.
Papa Ogunde only had equivalent of pry 6 education and spoke better English than most graduates today, He was a pioneer and the national theater should be named after him. I grew up in the 80s on the same street where he lived off Hughes Avenue in Alagomeji yaba. I was of course young in my teenage years and often ran behind his trucks on his way to perform. Its funny baba said there was societal decay in the 80s .he would definitely not recognize Nigeria now. Thanks for the memories

As Yoruba people we had forebearers that showed us the way, we have no reason for being lost again. Baba Ogunde's work was more powerful than thought, it wasn't just theater, it was life all together and sociopolitical philosophies. One of those most remarkable statements from him which was the Hallmark of his originality which we should all hold on to is that "My stories are for my people, my cinemas are for my people, if anyone outside wants it I can export to them" ile latin kesho rode. I still don't understand what people mean by NollyWood because as a matter of fact there is nothing like that because the idea came from people trying to copy the American movie city Hollywood and truth be told it is a complete insult and a big disgrace on the legacy of people like late Chief Hubert Ogunde and other theater arts legends.We just have to be original because NollyWood is just trying to make our movie industry sound like that of the Americans.

I remember those days my mom goes to the National Arts Theatre Iganmu Lagos to watch Hubert Ogunde's stage plays. Chai! 9ja which way nah? All those monuments building are now things of the past that we hardly visit

In the 80s when I was in secondary school in Warri…I was privileged to see Ogunde’s shows on several occasions. I used to think to myself how did he come up with this idea of acting and performing a life show. When I look back now…all I have to say is bravo for being way ahead of your time!
